Pierce expected to survive Sharks vote

Embattled Cronulla chairman Barry Pierce is expected to survive in the position when the NRL club's board election results are revealed at Thursday's annual general meeting.

The board of the Cronulla leagues and football clubs will learn their fate when the results are announced at the AGM, which begins at 7pm on Thursday night.

Voting in the elections finished at 5pm on Wednesday and the counting will be done by the Australian Electoral Commission.

Sharks officials expect a larger than normal turnout of their 19,000 members at the meeting in the wake of the series of crises that has engulfed the club.

Despite the election being completed, the current board has already called for an extraordinary general meeting to conduct a fresh vote and make changes to the club's constitution before July 31.

The board has said details of the new election will be announced at the AGM.

Pierce and his fellow directors have been under immense pressure since details of a 2002 sex scandal involving Matthew Johns were revealed by the ABC's Four Corners program earlier this month.

Reni Maitua's positive drugs test, allegations players were offered sex toys, reports a woman employee accidentally injured by chief executive Tony Zappia last year was paid $20,000, mounting debt reportedly totalling $12 million and the withdrawal of major sponsor LG Electronics have added to the off-field problems.

On Monday, the Sharks board held crisis talks with NRL chief executive David Gallop.

Gallop emerged satisfied with the club's plan going forward but urged members to have their say about who they believed should run the club through the elections.

On the field, the club is outright last having won just one of 10 matches and this week has weathered a racism row involving captain Paul Gallen.

A report on Wednesday said Gallen would be stripped of the captaincy on his return from NSW State of Origin duty, but a club spokesman and coach Ricky Stuart both said the situation had not yet been discussed.

Stuart declined to comment further on the report.

Maitua is waiting on his B sample result after testing positive for clenbuterol, a stimulant used to boost muscle mass and reduce body fat.

His manager, Sam Ayoub, said on Wednesday no information had yet been received on the second sample.

The former Test lock, who was sacked by the Bulldogs last year after several indiscretions, faces a two-year ban if the B sample comes back positive.

Miller plays the Obama race card

<EDITED>

Elections for the board ended yesterday, with the results due to be released at the annual general meeting tonight. The directors, most of whom were in place when the club failed to act against players involved in a group sex incident in New Zealand, might then step down.

Regardless of what happens at the board level, Miller believes the key thing now is to support the administration. "My main objective at this stage is to show Ricky Stuart and Tony Zappia that I'm prepared to support them 110 per cent," he said.

Why would pierce be anything other than expected to survive if he wasnt being run against? Am i missing something or is the media less informed than i thought?

Is anyone going to the Annual General Meeting tommorow? If so can they fill us in tommorow night after it is done?

EMBATTLED Cronulla are planning to appoint league's first female club president and invite Sharks great Andrew Ettingshausen on to the board to repair their tattered image.

As angry members prepare to front tonight's hotly anticipated AGM, The Daily Telegraph can reveal influential figures are touting Sutherland Shire car dealer Madeline Tynan to succeed veteran chairman Barry Pierce once a fresh election is called.

A group of half-a-dozen businesspeople have spent the past week assembling a consortium to take over from the current nine-man board, of which at least six directors will survive this evening's AGM.

They feel Tynan - manager of long-term Sharks' sponsor Tynan Motors - is best-credentialled to lead Cronulla out of the mire, while Ettingshausen, who has remained silent during recent dramas, is also being sought.

Cronulla's historic move to appoint a female figurehead comes with Wests Tigers set to appoint the NRL's first woman CEO.

A source close to the joint venture last night said a shortlist of four candidates had been made, one of whom was a businesswoman.

Results of the current Sharks election will be tabled at tonight's AGM, but there will be minimal change at board level because only three independents contested the poll.

The under-fire Pierce is assured of being reinstated as president, but he will move an extraordinary motion for fresh elections to be conducted before 31 July.

It's understood Pierce's proposal will revolve around splitting the football and leagues club board, while also making the chairman accountable to members.

Nine directors would be elected to the leagues club board, five of whom would also have to represent the football club. The remaining four would be appointed to the football board.

It appears certain the new poll will be contested by a business-minded consortium, with former greats Barry Russell and Gavin Miller meeting coach Ricky Stuart, CEO Tony Zappia and others for lunch yesterday.

One of the three independent candidates, Damien Irvine, confirmed Tynan was in their sights to be chairwoman.

Tynan confirmed her interest in being involved with the club at a future date.

ET to save Sharks!!

At last!! Some bloody common sense

Appointing ET and a high profile female to the board will at least start repairing the Sharks image and hopefully attract sponsors

We should really push the female thing and try and be at the forefront of attracting women to the game respecting their dignity.

Just a quick note:

Paul Tubridy and Brett Crowley have NOT held onto the spots at the election.

That means new directors Damian Irvine, Ricky Surace and Paul Walker have all been successful in gaining election to the board.

Excellent news and hopefully the start towards a fully fledged new board at the EGM!

That's good news. I hope at least some of them get a spot on the board after the second election, after showing the initiative to stand for these ones. I am a little wary of just having Shire royalty on the new board...

AGM is tonight at 7pm in the Showroom.

Cronulla Sharks CEO re-elected
David Beniuk
May 28, 2009 - 9:34PM

Controversial Cronulla chairman Barry Pierce was re-elected unopposed on Thursday night and handed life membership of the Sharks leagues club, as three new directors were voted onto the embattled board.

Already a life member of the Cronulla football club, Pierce, who has been under intense scrutiny since details of a 2002 sex scandal involving Matthew Johns were revealed by the ABC's Four Corners program earlier this month, was granted the leagues club honour at the Sharks' annual general meeting.

But in a sign members were in the mood for some change, Ricky Surnace, Paul Walker and Damien Irvine became the new members on the combined board of the leagues and football clubs.

They replace Brett Crowley and Paul Tubridy, who were voted off, and Frank Doran, who did not stand for re-election.

More than 250 members turned up amidst a series of crises which have engulfed the club, including mounting debt reportedly totalling more than $12 million, a positive drugs test for star player Reni Maitua and a racism row involving captain Paul Gallen.

Several spoke "passionately" about the club's future, according to a club spokesman, in particular quizzing the board about the proposed $100 million property development adjacent to Toyota Stadium due to go before Sutherland Shire Council next month.

"The proposal the board put forward is this club, with its assets, is more sustainable than every other club in Sydney other than the Bulldogs," the spokesman said.

Exactly what the elections mean, though, remains unclear because the previous board had already called for an extraordinary general meeting to conduct a fresh vote and make changes to the club's constitution before July 31.

Meanwhile, Bulldogs veteran Luke Patten has offered his NRL rivals at the Sharks some hope, suggesting his club's turnaround is the perfect blueprint.

Only last year it was the Bulldogs in free-fall as crises such as Willie Mason and Sonny Bill Williams' walkouts culminated in a wooden spoon for the Belmore club.

"I guess the club just made some tough decisions," Patten told AAP on Thursday.

"Anyone that was stuffing up, they got rid of them and they brought (CEO) Todd Greenberg in and he just made decision after decision really - new coach, all new staff, new players and with that everything's changed.

"There's a new attitude and everyone's working really hard for that and maybe the Sharks, that is something they can look at.

"I don't want to comment too much because I don't really know too much about their club but maybe it's something that they can look at.

"A lot of people say a change is as good as a holiday and I think that's sort of worked for us.

"I think we were getting a little bit stale there, as much as the amount of respect I have for Folkesy (former coach Steve Folkes), I think the club did need a change.

"And I think at the moment, even though it's only the halfway mark of the season, it's really shown that it's a good thing for us."

I'll always be there for Cronulla: Andrew Ettingshausen

SHARKS great Andrew Ettingshausen is open to joining Cronulla's march from adversity, which began last night when two senior directors were dumped from office.

Conspicuously silent as his beloved team lurched between imminent insolvency and scandal over the past month, "ET" yesterday spoke of the club's plight for the first time.

In a massive boost for suffering supporters, Cronulla's most prolific player confirmed he intended to listen to overtures for him to join a new board - but also admitted any involvement would be weighed up against his outside commitments.

"I've always been there whenever the club has needed me or called on me to help out in any way. I'll always be there," said Ettingshausen, who played 18 straight seasons and a record 328 top-grade games for Cronulla.

"As far as being on a board . . . I've haven't been approached by anyone yet. I'm there to help and support the club. (But) it's difficult. Even over the course of the past couple of weeks I've been away with work.

"I've basically arrived back and it's a case of 'What's happening?'. I'm really not in the loop on it at all.

"It makes it difficult when you're travelling doing TV shows (Fishing program Escape with ET) and I've also got some interstate businesses."

As revealed by The Daily Telegraph yesterday, a consortium of local business leaders is being assembled to take over from the current board. Influential figures want to convince Ettingshausen to join, along with successful Sutherland Shire car dealer Madeline Tynan, whom they believe can be the NRL's first-ever female club president.

Fresh elections will be held no later than July 31 after an Extraordinary General Meeting was approved at last night's AGM.

The landmark meeting attracted hundreds of concerned members, some of whom vented their spleen at the current board. The results of this week's election - which endorsed a rebel-led ticket boasting three new directors - doused their venom.

Sponsors Ricky Surace and Damien Irvine, and ARL Development officer Paul Walker, are the club's new directors. They were voted in at the expense of Brett Crowley and Paul Tubridy, while a third incumbent Frank Doran did not contest the poll.

Crowley's dumping could have wider ramifications because the lawyer was a driving force in Cronulla's $90 million property development, touted as the club's salvation.

The remaining six incumbents on the nine-man board will now come under immense pressure to stand down and save Cronulla the $50,000 it would cost to stage another election.

Ettingshausen said filming of his 11th TV series during the past month explained his lack of commentary in the club's hour of need.

"I'm not so much for opinions but more for decisions - and you'll find that there will be a lot of decisions made over the next month that will impact on how the club goes forward," the 43-year-old added.

"When I first came to the club in 1983 it was looking at not being able to pay the players. A number of players left but the club still survived.

"I believe that will continue on in the future - I've got no doubt there.

"I believe they need to correct a few things to move forward. I've got every confidence in the club."

Escape with ET is still on?!!

The Crowley thing worries me slightly. The project will still get done without him right?

Not sure what to make of the article. Glad ET wants to help out but i cant say he sounded motivated to help the cause too much other than verbal support.
