What exactly would you fellas like to hear from a chairman? There was a couple of opinion pieces written in the week mentioning how our off-field dramas might catch up with us on the field. This reassured me, because regardless of what others think, or if we have a ceo or not, we are still getting things done

Because of the confidentiality agreement I won’t print the text here but it was clear he was asked to resign his position.

Kareela Golf Club and Sporties Group members each unanimously approved in their own votes earlier this week. This ensures the leagues club have a home - “Sharkies @ Kareela Golf” - and additional revenue stream whilst the leagues club is rebuilt. The board have articulated long term plans, talking further acquisition and to grow brand within Shire.

ILGA approval is the next step.

As someone with sports club and registered club management experience, it sounds financially solid. Assuming the board can execute it. Cronulla Leagues board to run both clubs.

In exciting news for the Cronulla Club, the Sharks amalgamation with Kareela Golf has been approved following a series of extraordinary meetings and voting conducted amongst the members of the Sharks Leagues Club, Kareela Golf and Sporties.

At the third of such meetings, Sharks members last night unanimously endorsed the resolution to go ahead with the amalgamation, after Kareela Golf Club and Sporties had voted earlier this week to confirm the de-amalgamation of their existing partnership. Both Kareela Golf Club and Sporties members also voted unanimously in favour for the de-amalgamation in paving the way for the Sharks to take over operations at Kareela.

Chairman Dino Mezzatesta conducted the members meeting at the Kareela Golf Club and was thrilled Sharks members shared the vision of the Board of Directors and Sharks Management.

“We certainly appreciate the support of our members in unanimously voting for what will be a new chapter in the Sharks history and a new home for our members to enjoy,” Mezzatesta said.

“As I said in a recent note to members, this new addition to the Sharks stable will set the footprint for future growth and expansion while giving our members and our community many more benefits.

“The amalgamation with Kareela also secures another revenue generating asset to further strengthen our financial position,” he added.

The Sharks plan is to continue with Kareela Golf Club as a second site for members and their guests, both while construction is continuing at the Club’s traditional home at Woolooware and also into the future once the doors of the new Sharks Leagues Club open for business.

“We should be very excited as for the first time in the history of our Club we are expanding the brand to another area of the Shire, something we want to continue to do,” Mezzatesta said. “With our 27,000 strong membership base at Sharks, now boosted by the 7,000 Kareela members, the new combined Sharks entity will become a powerhouse in the Sutherland Shire.”

The Sharks amalgamation with Kareela Golf Club now needs to be ratified by the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) before becoming official.

Under the arrangement the Sharks will take over the running and day to day operations of the Kareela Golf Club premises.

Sharks Leagues Club General Manager Elie Bassil was also pleased the amalgamation had passed the member vote and was looking forward to enhancing the experience for both Sharks and Kareela Golf Club members and guests alike.

“I hope our members come down and try the restaurant and bistro, which offers outstanding dining options, the kids club is already popular amongst golf club patrons and should be utilised by Sharks members. And if they haven’t been here previously Sharks members might be surprised by the amenities here, which are first class,” Bassil said.

More details as to what the amalgamation means to Sharks members in relation to membership rights at Kareela, and the opportunities offered to existing Kareela Golf Club members once the new Sharks premises opens, will be communicated once finalised with the ILGA.

Cronulla Sharks to transform with bold purchase of Kareela Golf Club

The Cronulla Sharks have produced one of the most strategic moves in their history by buying an 18-hole golf club in the Sutherland Shire and its surrounding land.

In a landmark decision for the NRL outfit, the acquisition of a second licenced club — Kareela Golf Club — by the board was supported unanimously at a meeting of 131 Sharks members on Thursday night.

Sharks chairman Dino Mezzatesta said the historic deal could transform the club into a “powerhouse” with the purcharse of 12,065 square metres of land for $4.6 million providing them with an extra $1 million in revenue annually and the potential for development of the land in the future.

Members were informed that an independent evaluation of the land is estimated at $12.7 million.

Taking a similar path to what the Roosters and Panthers have achieved through property investment, the Sharks will now own two licenced clubs — at their currently under-development Sharkies leagues club at Woolooware and now, 10km west at Kareela.

Cronulla will establish ‘Sharkies at Kareela Golf Club’ as their new home for all club functions during the two-year development phase of their original Woolooware league club.

Backing up their promise to invest part of the $40 million accrued from the development of land around Shark Park, the Cronulla board and their members secured the purchase of the golf club, in a bid to provide the NRL side with a guaranteed income outside of rugby league.

With their high-profile brand within the Shire and by combining their membership base with that of Kareela, the Sharks believe the golf club, not including an additional income stream from poker machines, has the potential to provide an additional income stream of $1 million per year.

The purchase from ‘Sporties’ who currently own and manage the golf course, was dependent on the approval of both Sharks and Kareela golf club members.

Members voted unanimously on both accounts.

“I can’t thank the hard work of our board and leagues club general manager Elie Bassil enough for their hard work and due diligence to achieve this historic result,’’ Mezzatesta said.

“But most of all this couldn’t have been achieved without the support of our members.

“We should all be very excited that this deal allows the Sharks to expand our brand, as well as into another sport.

“This new combined Sharks entity will be a powerhouse in the shire.’’

Hopefully it’s the right call, board seem very confident. Paying $3m for club land/building/assets (not the golf course... but still a decent chunk of land) and $1.6m for gaming machine entitlements. Kareela has lost money past couple of years but more recently has turned profitable it sounds.

I don’t really know if extra people will travel to Kareela out of this and whether the clubs will truly combine, but does seem like there would be plenty of manageable improvements they could make at Kareela, and as they said, it keeps staff in the game and avoids redundancies.

Apparently our leagues club made 1.5m profit over last year even with construction, so seems like they know what they’re doing on that side at least. Now to sort out the football mess.

Dino is a very good speaker and salesman... he should make more regular appearances.

PS. Just explaining the golf course. The council owns the golf course land, but the area where the club is located is freehold and zoned RE2 (see attached image - I believe it is the area in blue). Sporties owns/holds a license to manage the golf course operations. At this stage Sharkies will not buy/take over those management rights, but their intention is to do so down the track, if a few questions and hurdles can be worked out. But we will never have the "18-hole golf course" land itself.

Hope we did the right thing.
For some reason I am not excited by our revenue streams compared to how it was first envisioned

Yeah it doesn't sound that fancy to me. We get the club house, which means we can sell a couple of middies and an egg and lettuce sandwich to some blokes when they're winding down from a game.

Sounds good. Hope they do something with the car park.
It’s terrible full of pot holes and very limited parking spots.

They said that's priority #1, once the income starts to come in to pay for it, aiming to do it withing the next year. Other priorities are the roof, and lockers for the golf players.

What is the per year revenue ?
Enough to really support the playing team ?
A lot of profit will disappear to make those upgrades .
Feels like a black hole to me , as it is already running at its full potential . With the way we run clubs , can only go backwards.
Also the thinking that fans will go there after a game at Kogarah is ludicrous .
In the middle of nowhere .
Hope I'm wrong and Sharks Kareena proves a masterstroke .

I think their aim is to get to $1 million per year profit. The Sharks management team has been "consulting" there for the past couple of months and said there has been a big improvement in revenue even in that time.

I haven't been to Kareela much. I tend to agree about middle of nowhere, but last night the place was busy (even excluding the Sharks members in the meeting room). And there does seem plenty of room for improvement there still, just in making the food etc more efficient, maybe in terms of the functions as well.

Dino Mezzatesta was giving a lot of credit to the leagues club boss, Elie Bassil, so hopefully we're on a good thing there.

A lot of it does come down to pokies (unfortunately), and having the two clubs also means we get extra new pokies entitlement each year, which can be used at either club.

I do love the idea of having a Sharks presence in that part of the Shire, I wish it was a bit more central like Sutherland, but maybe one day that will be next! I do think we can do a better job at Kareela than Sporties, just given the local links.
