Nine takes first swipe at Johns show
DANNY WEIDLER
April 4, 2010
NINE boss David Gyngell hasn't banned league footage from the Matthew Johns Show, but he has taken his first swipe at the show and Seven boss David Leckie in a week in which its ratings dropped by 100,000 viewers. The Johns program during the week showed a couple of clips of games - which is more than it did on the first show, when the only actual football that was shown was the fake fight between the Morris brothers. This time the dropped ball from Martin Kennedy was shown, they talked over highlights, and the Greg Inglis palm-off on Jamie Soward was screened. In Melbourne, the non-rights Channel Nine (AFL) Footy Show was banned for years from showing footage. So far Gyngell has refrained from doing that to Johns's program. ''I noticed the footage being used, but I have to say I am not particularly concerned by it,'' he said. ''To be honest I thought the highlights footage was the best part of the show.'' In the lead-up to Johns's debut, Leckie predicted massive ratings for the new show. After all, this is the channel that was confident of turning a ''s--- show'' like Cougar Town into a hit. Gyngell said: ''If David Leckie considers Cougar Town a s--- show, I'd love to know now what he thinks of his football show.'' The average audience for the Matthew Johns Show has dropped from 396,000 to 295,000. It just beat Getaway in Sydney - but nationally in combination with the southern states program, The Bounce, it lost.
MERC'S WINDFALL
THE Mercedes Benz in which Lewis Hamilton did his now famous burn-out is going to be auctioned. Mercedes dealers from around the country were on the phone to head office wanting the rights to sell the vehicle. Word is the V8-powered C63AMG sedan will go for more than the $148,900 that it is worth.
HAYNE, BURGESS SIGN UP
THE FOOTY SHOW has received some serious boosts in its battle with The Matty Johns Show - signing Jarryd Hayne and Sam Burgess. The negotiations with Hayne have been going on for months and his decision to go to Nine is a coup. And as the season progresses, Burgess will be a increasingly valuable media player.
A TITANIC PAY RISE SOUGHT
WHAT was Ben Hannant's asking price to move to the Gold Coast? Some say $500,000 a year. That's about $150,000 more than he is on at the Bulldogs, but Titans insiders say that he was never going to get more than Luke Bailey, who is paid less than $350,000. The Titans were also not interested in dishing out big dollars and some believe he should see out his deal at the Dogs.
TUQIRI SCORES SOME PAYBACK
LOTE TUQIRI revealed why he dropped Robbie Farah on his backside during their try-scoring celebration after Tuqiri's miracle four-pointer against the Eels. ''He gave me whiplash during our celebrations the previous week, so I didn't want it to happen again,'' Tuqiri laughed. Farah's reply: ''I'm glad that's why - I was worried he didn't like Lebanese blokes hugging him and wrapping their legs around him.'' Off the field, Farah is raising money through his Mates On A Mission group with a poker night on June 12.
STEVENS EYES SILVER SCREEN
JASON STEVENS is looking for a backer for his movie project. ''I've got a script being looked at right now,'' he said. ''I'm hoping someone takes it up.'' So, is it adventure, action, war? ''It's a chick flick,'' he said.
FOX OFFSIDE WITH LUKE
ISSAC LUKE has every right not to talk to Fox Sports. Fox took the mickey out of him for his late arrival at Monday's game - when the reason related to problems with his girlfriend's pregnancy. At least Fox apologised. Luke was really late for the Sharks clash. ''Normally I like to be there for the Toyota Cup,'' he said. ''I really believe it is important to watch the young guys play.'' That attitude is why he is one of the club's most popular players.
RICKY STICKS BY ROOKIE
YOUNG Shark Albert Kelly won't be tossed away in a hurry by Ricky Stuart despite his tough starting debut on Monday. And his teammates don't want that. He was the players' player and showed guts to back up. ''Albert is the least of my problems - the players have full faith in him,'' Stuart said.
A STIRLING CHOICE FOR ALL
STIRLING MORTLOCK's signature is being trumpeted by the Melbourne Rebels - the truth is the Brumbies are privately relieved he has a new home. Out of respect for his career, the Brumbies were prepared to take him on again next year for a 14th season. But there was no way they would match a huge three-year deal for the veteran centre.
TIGER THE EXEC PRODUCER
TIGER WOODS controls the media even more tightly than first thought. I approached ESPN to chat to the cable network's reporter, Tom Rinaldi, who had interviewed Woods, and received the following from ESPN public relations: ''Due to agreements between ESPN and Tiger Woods, we won't be able to set up an interview with Tom for you on this one.''
FAMILIAR FACES AT 'NEW' NRL
EXPECT Graham Annesley to be kept on as NRL chief operating officer when an independent commission is finally established. David Gallop is known to be pushing for it - and given Gallop is the only person promised a gig, he is a good person to have onside. News Ltd pushed for Gallop to keep his role, and now it appears that the ''new'' NRL will have a familiar feel to it.
FENECH MAULS HIS HAMMY
JEFF FENECH scored a free family pass to the Easter Show this week - but the boxing great tore a hamstring in the process. ''The ticket guy from 2Day FM was at a park near my place and I chased him down when I heard it on the Kyle and Jackie O Show,'' he said. ''I tackled the bloke and in the process ripped my hammy. I can barely move. But my kids are happy.''
FAN'S KISS MISS
ROOSTERS glamour boy Daniel Conn admits he was stunned by the woman who sat on his lap and tried to kiss him during the win over the Broncos. ''I thought it was one of the trainers when I felt this hand on my back. It rattled me when she sat on my lap and went for a kiss.'' Did she land one? ''No. She was pretty drunk, it was no big deal.'' For the record, Conn is single.
GOWER WON'T BE COMING BACK
CRAIG GOWER is unhappy with his French club Bayonne, but his manager, Greg Willett, has ruled out a move to the NRL if the dispute isn't settled. There have been rumours linking Gower to the Bulldogs - even for part of this season. He is not pleased about being slated for a move from No.10 to inside-centre. ''Craig is a No.10, full stop, and if they want to move him then maybe it's time for Craig to move,'' Willett said. ''He has a number of clubs keen to sign him. He also has options in Italy.'' And Italy is where he appears likely to go. ''They will let him go and play in Italy, but not for another French team so that looks like his future. The plan is for Craig to play in the World Cup for Italy and then to play in the Olympics.''
O'NEILL AND EALES ARE FINE
TALK that John O'Neill is feuding with his close mate John Eales is off the mark. It's my information that O'Neill is really pushing for Eales to become an ARU board member. The pair had a tiff over a column Eales wrote which was critical of the ARU's treatment of the Melbourne Rebels. But that was it.
BOLDON QUICK OFF THE MARK TO LEND A HAND
FOUR-TIME Olympic medallist Ato Boldon arrives in Australia this week, accepting an invitation from his old mate Nova Peris Batman to participate in coaching clinics for indigenous youngsters and attend the Commonwealth Games athletics trials later this month. Boldon and Peris go way back - to the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, where Boldon was the 100m champion and Peris the 200m gold medallist. Boldon has been busy mentoring a young Aboriginal athlete from Newcastle, Liam Gander, via email. Gander was reportedly stunned by Boldon's kindness. ''He has been my life hero,'' Gander told Peris. ''Now to actually meet him is a dream come true.''
