So I am really happy that channel 7 is starting its own show it will be headed by Matty Johns and Webcke is to be added to the mix its positive for league fans and for us as supporters more choice and that means the footy show on nine will have to pick its act up.

Webcke has stated before that the footy show has become a joke and most of us agree its old humour something that was good 10 years ago and whilst a lot will say well its still getting awards well yes it is but it has no real competition so I am excited.

So does this mean Seven will be bidding on media rights for games well, you would think so with our sport out shining other sports on TV with the ratings you would think that Seven will want some of the Pie and Ten couldn't be that far behind.

I hope they try and get it on the Tv in melb at a reasonable hour as well.

All positive if you ask me competition is a good thing in the media what's everyone else's thoughts.

I agree I think its a good thing. I hope ch7 and ch10 make a play for the rights when the current contract expires.

I never did watch ch9 footy show. I was always a fan of Fox sports show even though I feel like punching some of them in the head.

But ch9 can take this :take that and this :take that and that :take that

I think this is a real plus for the game.
The Footy Show is still a good source of footy related info for us fans to watch but it needs competition as it's getting stale & it's too close to those who think they are more important than the supporters & that's where it lost me.
Mathew Johns has the ability to bring the game back to the people & i think that he is one personality that truely adds something to the game that cant be classed as either predictable or boring.
I enjoy watching him commentate so hopefully it wont be too long before the show is on air.

Webcke 'almost certain' for new footy show: Johns

Matthew Johns has snared Shane Webcke, one of the most vocal critics of The Footy Show, to join his rival rugby league program.

''We've had chats with Shane Webcke to get him involved and we're a long way down the track,'' Johns SAID, following meetings with Channel Seven executives.

''It's almost certain he'd be part of the show.''

Webcke, one of the most respected figures in the game, has previously claimed The Footy Show has crossed the line from being irreverent to irrelevant.

The move will turn up the heat on the Nine Network's long-running league program, which controversially parted ways with Johns last year.

The new project, which is yet to be named, could still be slated for a Thursday night timeslot, although Johns denied it would go head-to-head with The Footy Show.

''We're still not sure,'' Johns said. ''They're still tossing it around. It's a tricky one, there's the possibility of Wednesday night. You don't want to be clashing with another rugby league program, with NRL on Fox or The Footy Show.

"That's not what it's about. We're just trying to find the slot we think is right.''

It was believed Johns's ignominious parting with Channel Nine had effectively killed off his beer-swilling alter ego, Reg Reagan.

However, the former Newcastle and Cronulla pivot left the door slightly ajar for a return.

''I haven't really given it any consideration, I haven't brought up his name as yet,'' he said. ''You never say never, but at the moment - unlikely.''

Asked if he was excited about returning to prime-time TV, Johns quipped: ''It's good just to be back in the workforce.''

the challenge for the show is to choose what day to air it, as nrl on fox is wednesday and footy show is thursday.

Well where would it be aired though! you would assume it would be in a later night spot as most spots on the channel are already used so im going to say maybe 9:30pm on a Wednesday would be the most ideal to start with.. if its solely a NRL show and no variety it could be put earlier but 9:30pm would be ideal to start with for a variety NRL show.

Sunday!
12pm U20's Game FOX live
2pm Game FOX live
4pm Game CH9 Delayed

Monday!
7pm Game FOX Live

Tuesday!
NRL Scoreboard/Teams FOX 8:30pm

Wednesday!
NRL on Fox 7:30pm

Thursday!
CH9 Footy Show 9:30pm

Friday!
7:30pm Game CH9 Live
9:30pm Game CH9 Delayed

Saturday
3pm U20's Game FOX live
5:30pm game FOX Live
7:30pm game FOX Live
9:20pm game FOX Live/Delayed (daylight Savings dependant)

I like the idea of the show, but am wary of Ch 7 going for any rights after they butchered the best of the tennis games recently - classic example of a monopoly gone bad! Ch 9 sunday footy show and sunday roast is a great way to start a sunday arvo of footy. Put Johns against the old footy show and he would win hands down!

I think you will find they may go the use it or lose it system they need to look at that for the Melb market that's for sure.

I agree the tennis was a screw up but I think you would find that they will work out what works best for ratings.

Maybe ch7 will offer games via download on Tivo as well so many new technologies to look into before decisions are made lets just hope they don't sign another 5 year deal FFS that was just stupid.

Totally agree with you about melbourne Willy - it is a disgrace! Was coincidently down there on an Origin night and could not find one place to watch it - hotels, pubs you name it,till the early hours of the morning replay. Never again! But it's probably why they have such a big turn out at the Storm home games...

What im really hoping for this year is that channel 9 will play replays of the weekend's games on their GO! channel. Also replays of games from years gone. Channel 7 does that with 7two with AFL, so i don't see why channel 9 can't.

I have a feeling this will be a very informative, discussion of the hard topics in rugby league, should be a great show.

Great, it'll probably be a good show but can I really handle the sneak preview of 'cougar town' every 5 minutes?

Channel 7 is so god damn annoying, it's like having my balls in a vice.

If Webcke is involved, I would tend to agree with you Hitman, as he has been a fairly harsh critic of the Footy Show's "boofhead" format. I think it will be more in the mould of the "Talkin Sport" program on 2SM Radio here in Sydney with Graham Hughes - a serious sports show with some humour added.

On the other hand, will they be able to stop Johnsy dressing up as Trent the gay flight attendant or Reg Reagan or any of the other juvenile crap they pull on the Footy Show? I sincerely hope so because he has much more to offer than that crap.

yeah mate, I really hope so too, I think there is a good chance though with all the stress and hard times he went through the past year, that he may not feel like clowning around anymore, I think I remember phil gould saying he was on suicide watch or something.

That was because Johns was forced to listen to "Gus Gould's greatest hits - a guide to rugby league commentating"
