Thanks Burgo.

Yeah maybe wrong choice of words with groomed perhaps. But it still took Hughes a while to get it and he needed a good system to do it in.

Trindall is trying it at 22 with no leadership and no coaching.

Yep. The reason guys like Walker, Pearce, etc. are exceptional is because... they're the exception. Almost all good halves do an apprenticeship of some type (Cup, bench, different position, etc.)

He's only had the one bad game.

Totally understand, but honestly reserve grade would serve him well, and I'm not saying it like a bad thing, but for development, yes. I definitely see potential in Trindall

We don't have anyone else though, who are you going to play there?

Last two seasons of very little games as a half, now being thrown in deep end, not the best situation for him.

I think even when NSW Cup had been on earlier this year but he was in the NRL 17 he may have been better off playing full 80s in his preferred position in Cup.

Pros and cons to each I guess, 10-15 mins here and there of first grade as 'roving forward' vs 80s in preferred position in Cup.

I’m amazed at how some people are so quick to turn on him - kids playing what his 6th game at halfback in like 2 years ? Behind a well beaten pack with a halves partner who’s our utility player.

Just like Will Kennedy these kids will have good games and bad games, get behind them watch them improve or atleast until we have a replacement .

He’s had a very very interrupted life into first grade so far also under a shtty coach at that

Yep agree with all of that, people are turning very fast.

They don't all turn out like Nathan Cleary as a teenager.

As far as I’m concerned his audition scorecard reads: 2 good games - 1 bad game. Inconsistency is part and parcel of blooding young players, especially spine players. Patience is essential.

I was as annoyed as anybody about his game against the Warriors, but it’s essential that he’s given the chance to bounce back.

Not super sure why you've quoted me, I don't see wishing he'd had more extensive time in the 7 at Cup level over the past year and a half as a criticism of him.

I though some people got on his dick way too fast to begin with (probably partially just because he wasn't Chad) but yes there are some seemingly quickly distancing themselves from him.

I'll say positive stuff when he does positive stuff and I'll call out negative stuff too, each individual comment I make is not reflective of my full opinion of him though.

Chad & SJ were given years of first grade with very spotty form - Trindall deserves more than a few games to be written off. Chad was mediocre coming into FG, so much so he was given a holiday in NZ and we ran out Jeff Robson but he came back in 2016 and was handy for a few seasons even very good at times

Nathan Cleary only just hitting his straps now after multiple seasons in first grade and all the hype - it takes time, especially in a shambles of a team (something we are and penrith arn't anymore). Trindall could shine under a legitimate coach in Fitz and better players, structures and attitudes around him. he ain't on big coin or a long contract and still some time and cap to sign another 7, we need to chillz

Well that makes more sense

I definitely agree he has had a very interrupted entry to first grade although (other than consistent access to Cup football, which is significant but out of our control) I don't think that is inconsistent with many halves his age.

He has shown some good and promising signs so definitely doesn't deserve to be on the scrap heap yet, but has also shown me some stuff I want him to improve on, which to various extents he can do in training and Cup (when available) as well as first grade when selected.

It wouldn't shock me if he became a solid or better NRL half however it also wouldn't shock me if it was a couple more years until he really got to the point he locked down the role for himself.

At the moment with the troops we have available he is a clear #7 choice to me which is a great opportunity for him and he definitely shouldn't be discarded for one bad performance, or even a handful given how much $ we have out however there are some individual skills like not kicking out on the full he really doesn't want to make a habit of as those are on him only.

He’s played two plus seasons in reserve grade. He needs first grade experience to see if he’s got it. Way too early to tell and judging him on Sundays game is a bit premature.

Just the one mate (2019)

He's started more than three games I think.

At any rate, there's a few people who turn on a dime through games, so you'll always get that in some portion.

Most though I think we're calling it the things he needs to improve. There's quite a few. When the tabs rolling he looks good. When they're not he's looking defeated and withdrawing. We can't have that in our 7. The million dollar question is how long he'll need to develop. I think he can, but there a fair go to climb and is rather get in a player we know performs. Three options are pretty limited right now, so he might just get that chance

The three games since Johnson has been injured. Thats what I mean by his audition, the rest of the season, he’s three games into it.

This shouldn't be under estimated. Against the warriors our forwards were being bashed up the middle all game - most halves would've struggled, let a lone a guy with less than a dozen 80 minute games. Plus as much as Connor is all heart - he's no 5/8.
