Panda! that Syd FC v Nth QLD is the same night as the sharks roosters game, your not seriously going to miss a sharks game to see some drop kick blow in who won sweet ***** all

I actually wonder which option is better for the Sharks?

They would be getting paid something for having Sydney play at Shark Park.

If they are taking a percentage of the gate, then it may well be more beneficial for the Sharks if you go to the Sydney game!!

Sydney FC to play trial match at Cronulla

By James Phelphs and Josh Massoud
May 23, 2009 12:00am

SYDNEY FC has emerged as shock saviour for besieged Cronulla, with the A-League glamour club to play a trial at Toyota Stadium next month that is expected to net the Sharks a desperately-needed $50,000.

And in a further bid to generate more income from the fully-owned facility, the Sharks are also organising two dance concerts and an outdoor boxing promotion for later this year.

The Daily Telegraph yesterday exclusively captured the moment Sydney FC officials toured the ground before the deal was signed-off.

With $700,000 major sponsor LG pulling out in the wake of Reni Maitua's positive drug test, the Sharks need money fast to avoid sinking beneath a $9 million bank debt. Toyota Stadium is a major feature in the club's survival plan, which will be unveiled in full when NRL boss David Gallop meets with the entire board on Monday.

Sharks CEO Tony Zappia hopes the June 27 SydneyFC-North Queensland football fixture will attract 10,000 fans, given it will be former Liverpool star Robbie Fowler's debut on Australian soil.

"We think there will be some traction in playing a meaningful game here," Sydney FC general manager David Mason said.

"When we saw the pre-season draw we thought we would take the North Queensland match to Sutherland following a successful trial match at Seymour Shaw Oval last year. Sutherland is the biggest football association in Australia so we thought what a great place to bring a Sydney FC game. Toyota Park is the best ground in the area so we have been talking to the Sharks."

Sydney FC have a long term deal with the SFS but the move could see more soccer come to the Sutherland Shire.

"I am not sure if we will bring more games here," Mason said "It isn't an A-League match but it is a good opportunity to see what sort of reaction we get."

Following one of the toughest weeks of his career, Zappia admitted the Sharks would have to think "outside the square" as they fight for survival.

"It is good news," Zappia said. "We are looking at all sorts of opportunities at the moment, like concerts.

"We are in negotiations with a Dutch promoter about that. We're also looking into an outdoor boxing event."

The Sydney FC visit coincided with the opening day of voting for club elections, with the future of veteran chairman Barry Pierce hotly debated by members.

"I went the opposite to what it is now," said member Joan Walker. "I am very unhappy with what is going on here.

"I have been for years. Nobody is opposing them but we could still get rid of Barry Pierce. You never know."

Only three independent candidates have challenged the board - Ricky Surace, Damien Irvine and Paul Walker. Voting continues until Wednesday.

The Sharks also released a statement about Monday's meting with Gallop, where directors plan to inform the NRL boss of action taken in regard to a former female employee who was accidentally punched by Zappia last July.

Blog: Déjàvu All Over Again For Sydney FC

SYDNEY FC winning their third friendly in a row against the Sydney Tigers this week has given me a sense of dejavu.

It harps back to Sydney FC's first ever pre-season in 2005, the club formerly known as Bling FC, started life by playing a series of friendlies against local Sydney club sides; eventually winning nine competitive games in a row, 15 including friendlies, part of that run included winning the Oceania Championships that got them to the Club World Cup in Japan.

During that first year Sydney FC also had a European coach, the German Pierre Littbaski. And like his new counter-part Vatezslav Lavicka, the word discipline gets bandied about a lot.

Some smart Covite came up with the term Living Lavicka Loca in reference to the Czech coach; will the Ricky Martin classic be sung in the Cove this season as homage to our new trainer?

The scrapping of the pre-season cup by the FFA has given A-League teams the chance to organise friendlies against local and international teams. So far Sydney FC have played games against, and beat, Macarthur Rams (1-0), Bankstown City (2-0), and Sydney Tigers (3-0). Playing games against local Sydney teams is one way to connect with the local football community so Sydney must be applauded for that.

Sydney have a full programme of friendly games against Sydney teams but what happened to playing Barcelona? At least the Middlesbrough game did not eventuate - maybe Gareth Southgate has an appointment to fix his teeth over the summer's break?

The game against North Queensland Fury at Shark Park Cronulla on June 27 and hopefully featuring Robbie Fowler should be a great occasion. Considering that football will help the embattled Cronulla Sharks club make some 50k cash on that game it is even a bit weird.

Football helping Rugby League out - who would have thought...?

And by the way am I allowed to point out the irony that Matthew Johns co-hosted a show called the Sunday Roast?

Sydney FC will play the fourth match of their packed pre season program next week against Northern Tigers on Wednesday night at Mills Park in Asquith.

Good to see the three Sydney FC boys chosen in the under 20 Australian side that came third in an international comp featuring the youth sides of Liverpool and Ajax, well done Koffi Danning, Sam Munro and Mathew Jurman; just come back that's all.

I will leave you with this question: If a spray tanned bogan from the north shore of Sydney does not see a fight between a fat wog and a smaller wog; does she and the 'chk chk boom' she has became famous for really exist?

Sydney Maintain Unbeaten Run

Sydney Maintain Unbeaten Run
Jun 24 2009 00:02

A LATE goal to rising star Rhyan Grant steered Sydney FC to a 1-0 win tonight in their friendly against traditional football heavyweight Sydney United.

The victory in front of around 2,500 fans at the Sydney United Sports Centre is the Sky Blues' seventh-straight trial win, with the side yet to concede a goal during its pre-season program.

The clash with United always promised to provide Sydney with its sternest test so far and it didn't disappoint, with the State Premier League leader taking it up to its Hyundai A-League opponent from the opening whistle in Edensor Park.

A waterlogged field made fluent play almost impossible for either side, but after enduring the opening storm, Vitezslav Lavicka's men gradually began to gain control of the contest. The pitch conditions ensured chances were few and far between, however, and the two teams headed to the sheds at half time with the scores still locked at nil all.

It was more of the same at the start of the second stanza but the Sky Blues' class started to shine through as the time ticked away.

Several times the (Hyundai) A-League outfit came close to breaking the deadlock in the closing stages, with the best chance falling to midfield maestro, Karol Kisel. While he failed to find the net himself, the 32-year old was instrumental in setting up Sydney's winner.

In the shadows of full-time the Slovak international got in behind United's right-side defence then provided a precision pass inside to Grant. Receiving the ball on the spot, the teenager delivered a left foot strike that gave the keeper no hope, sealing a hard-fought win for Sydney FC.

After strengthening ties with one of the Australian football's traditional teams, Sydney will now turn its attention to a new arrival on the scene. This Saturday (June 27) the unbeaten Sky Blues will play their first friendly against Hyundai A-League opposition when they host competition newcomers, the North Queensland Fury in Cronulla.

The game gets underway at 7pm at Shark Park, following a curtain-raiser between State Premier League sides, Sutherland and Marconi.

Sydney FC set to sign two more
By John Taylor

SYDNEY FC coach Vitezslav Lavicka is close to putting the jigsaw pieces together after settling on two more overseas recruits.

The Czech sifted through hundreds of player CVs before deciding on a central defender and left back who he feels were needed to stiffen the defence.

"He (Lavicka) knows exactly what he was after and he has found them. We are well into negotiations with both players," Sydney football manager David Mason said yesterday.

Mason confirmed that the match against Middlesbrough was definitely off but the game against Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua would go ahead next month.

"The game against Middlesbrough was not as attractive once they were relegated from the Premier League," he said.

Sydney will continue their build up for the A-League with a hit-out against newcomers North Queensland Fury at Shark Park, Cronulla on Saturday.

Lavicka preferred to play against State League teams first and Sydney FC recorded their seventh win against NSW Premier League leaders Sydney United on Tuesday.

It took a last-minute goal from promising teenager Rhyan Grant to give FC their victory.

"Vitezslav wanted these games first. He feels the team is now ready to take on the A-League opponents," Mason said.

"We'll be playing Sutherland next Wednesday but after that we've got games arranged against Central Coast, Newcastle Jets and Shanghai.

"Mark Bridge comes back on July 1 but we've given him a week off before he starts training with us again."

It is doubtful if Sydney fans will get to see former England and Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler at Shark Park. Fowler is carrying a groin injury and didn't play in the club's first hit-out against A-League opposition Gold Coast on Tuesday night.

Fury coach Ian Ferguson praised the commitment of his players but they slipped up in the dying moments to concede two goals.

Sydney will also play Fury in the opening game of the A-League on August 8 in Townsville.

Grant Eyes Club And Country

SYDNEY FC youngster Rhyan Grant is hoping the coming months will yield both regular first team football and a trip to the Under 20 World Cup in Egypt.

Grant scored the only goal this week as the Moore Park men earned a 1-0 pre-season victory against Sydney United.

"My first goal is to try and be in the team, whether it be starting or on the bench for the first couple of rounds and then try and cement a starting spot for the rest of the season," said the 18-year-old.

"There's a lot of confidence in the squad. Hopefully I can be involved with the first team most of the year and have a good season."

It has been a rapid rise for Grant, who not so long ago was still playing football in Bathurst, before being recruited to the NSW Institute of Sport.

The teenager has spent time in both defence and the midfield during Sydney FC's pre-season campaign.

"Vitja (Vitezslav Lavicka) spoke to me at the start of the season about where I'd like to play," he explained. "I'd prefer to be in the midfield but if I'm needed at the back I'm happy to play there too, I'll play wherever," he said.

Grant has also attracted the attention of national selectors, and along with fellow Sydney young-guns Matt Jurman and Kofi Danning spent much of May touring Europe with the Young Socceroos. He is firmly in the running to earn a place in the Australian side for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, which will be contested in Egypt, starting September 24.

"It (the tour) was a great experience but I'm glad to be back training with Sydney," said Grant. "It would be an awesome experience if I get to go (to the Cup). We've got a few more tours coming up before we go to Egypt so hopefully I'll be selected for those tours and do well, then get picked in the final squad."

Grant will be back in action for Sydney FC this Saturday night when the Sky Blues play host to the North Queensland Fury in a highly-anticipated friendly at Shark Park, Cronulla.

Injuries hamper Adelaide United's plans
RICHARD EARLE
July 02, 2009 12:00am

ADELAIDE United coach Aurelio Vidmar has been spared a confrontation with Robbie Fowler but left "frustrated" by a depleted squad ahead of tonight's clash with North Queensland in Darwin.

The friendly fixture with Ian Ferguson's Fury marks United's first appearance in the Top End, in a battle with former Hindmarsh favourites Jason Spagnuolo and Fred Agius.

However, midfielder Paul Reid has not rebounded from the calf strain sustained during Adelaide's 1-0 win against Perth at Hindmarsh on Friday. Forwards Cristiano, Francesco Monterosso, playmaker Cassio, Fabian Barbiero and Australian Under-20 Player of the Year Daniel Mullen are also sidelined.

"We have a few injury problems," conceded Vidmar, now expected to start skipper Travis Dodd as a lone striker tonight.

"Unfortunately Reidy and Cristiano have just got really slight strains of calf and hamstring respectively. We have had to take three youth team kids, Joe Costa, Alex Sunasky, Joel Allwright for this trip.

"Cassio is another one who has had to pull out due to an impingement on his ankle."

Complicating United's preparation has been the late arrival of keeper Mark Birighitti and Kristian Sarkies following Australian Under-19 and A-League promotional duties. New signings Lloyd Owusu and Shin In Sup have also been rested.

Vidmar suspects the Fury is better than its 4-0 loss to Sydney FC at Cronulla's Shark Park last week showed.

"Fury are a young side coming up in the A-League and have had some indifferent results but are just trying to find their feet," he said.

"Robbie Fowler has been injured for some weeks now but I am sure once he gets fit he will come into the team and score goals because that is his pedigree.

"They still have a bit experience there with Robbie Middleby, Freddie (Agius), Jason (Spagnuolo) and Daniel McBreen."

Vidmar will use the game at Darwin Football Stadium to refine preparation for looming trips to Townsville and to gauge the match-fitness of his troops.

"It will be a test for us. It will probably be a 20-degree temperature difference from Adelaide so we will see how we go," Vidmar said.

"It is a good exercise to go up there because we are going to have to go up to North Queensland on a couple of occasions when conditions are pretty tough and this gives a good indication of what we have to do. The more games against A-League opposition, the better for us."

A-league should be greatful they are playing in etihad. If it wasn't for A-league, most of the players would be playing in local parks.
