Culina vows to look local

Jets coach Branko Culina vows to look local
BY JAMES GARDINER
14 Oct, 2010 01:00 AM

Jets coach Branko Culina has pledged to look locally to fill a raft of new positions in the club's football department and will start by meeting with his current staff.

Executive chairman Ken Edwards unveiled on Tuesday a $2.5 million structure incorporating eight extra full-time support staff that will transform the Jets into one of the best resourced A-League clubs.

The new positions include full-time operations manager, strength and conditioning coach, youth team coach and a manager and head scout.

The goalkeeping coach, physiotherapist and masseur will be upgraded from part-time to full-time, and skills coaches, nutritionist, video analyst and a leadership consultant will be employed on a part-time basis.

Under the old set-up, Culina, assistant coach Mark Jones, gear steward Chad Ralston and Craig Deans, who splits his duties between operations manager and youth team coach, were the only full-time staff.

"This is a great opportunity to get it right," said Culina, who will be responsible for the hiring. "Before we look elsewhere I want to sit down with the existing staff, get their views, thoughts, ideas and see whether we can move forward.

"Some of the positions will be upgraded, some need to be filled. We need to make sure with the existing people that they are comfortable and we are comfortable.

"If that is the case I can't see why we can't fill them quickly.

"Some of the other positions, for instance, head scout might take a bit longer, because we have to identify someone who has a nose for that kind of thing."

Culina said he had been inundated with inquiries since the structure was released.

"Where possible I want to fill the position with people from Newcastle," he said.

"You want local people involved, but they have to be capable of doing the job."

Former Socceroo Aytek Genc has been strongly linked to a role with the Jets but Culina said his name or anyone else was speculation.

"I don't know why he has been mentioned other than he was my assistant at Sydney FC," Culina said.

Culina does not anticipate that every appointment will be greeted with widespread approval.

"Those at the top will be the first to be scrutinised," he said. "Some of the decisions may not be everyone's cup of tea. At the end of the day we are accountable for it. In the past you didn't have the input but were still responsible."

The Jets bolstered their administration staff with the appointment yesterday of former Cronulla NRL chief executive Richard Fisk as the membership and corporate sales director and confirmation that John Tsatsimas will remain as chief executive.

Sponsorship and membership are areas Edwards has targeted for increases.

"I think last year the total sponsorship revenue for the Jets was in the order of $250,000," Edwards said.

"Whereas at the Central Coast Mariners it was over $2 million.

"There is the sponsorship and the corporate hospitality, but more importantly the real strategic focus for us is the membership side of it.

"We are going to use the rest of this year to do research - talk to fans and season ticket-holders - and launch a new membership program for next season."

The Jets will tomorrow announce new ticket prices for the remaining 11 home games.

"Our focus is making football affordable for kids and families," Edwards said. "We will be announcing some very attractive pricing for families, including children under 15 free."

Jets Strengthen Off-Field Line Up

Jets Strengthen Off-Field Line Up
Staff Writer
Oct 14 2010 10:11

NEWCASTLE Jets have revealed current CEO John Tsatsimas will remain at the club as well as unveiling several new signings to boost the off-field line-up.

"It is with great pleasure that the club announces that CEO, John Tsatsimas has agreed to stay with the club," said executive chairman Ken Edwards.

"John has a deep understanding of football and the Jets, and is a strong advocate for the new football structure and community focus put in place to assist coach Branko Culina and the players."

The club has also announced the creation of a new position, Director Membership and Corporate; which will be filled by Richard Fisk.

Mr Fisk spent 11 years as General Manager, Marketing and Media with the Sydney Roosters, where he was a part of the substantial growth in the Roosters brand and most recently was the CEO of the Cronulla Sharks.

"I am thrilled to be a part of a major rebuild of a national brand as significant as the Jets. To have the opportunity to work with such professionals as Ken, John and Branko will be exciting," he said .

Edwards also confirmed Andrew Licata - Marketing and Media Manager, Aaron Abela - Chief Financial Officer, Steve Watson - Commercial Manager and Neville Bajzath - Events and Ticketing Manager will continue on to assist with the growth of the business.

Eclipse Media, Events and PR Managing Director, Tracy Kearney, will also join the Executive Team and provide strategic direction and advice to the club.

He added: "It's such an exciting time for the club and the football community.

"The countdown is now on to our next two home games and we continue to work diligently with the aim of giving this club back to its rightful owners - the Jets Family and the broader community of Newcastle, the Hunter and Northern NSW."

Newcastle Jets chief Tsatsimas set to stay

Newcastle Jets chief Tsatsimas set to stay

Newcastle Jets keep going from strength to strength off the field with news that CEO John Tsatsimas has signed on.

Following the capture of mining and racing magnate Nathan Tinkler as owner, the Jets have gone about their business off the pitch and are now boosted by the fact Tsatsimas has agreed to remain in his role.

“It is with great pleasure that the club announces that CEO, John Tsatsimas has agreed to stay with the club," said executive chairman Ken Edwards.

"John has a deep understanding of football and the Jets, and is a strong advocate for the new football structure and community focus put in place to assist coach Branko Culina and the players."

Along with Tsatsimas, the club has welcomed former Cronulla Sharks CEO Richard Fisk who has stepped into the freshly-created Director Membership and Corporate role.

“I am thrilled to be a part of a major rebuild of a national brand as significant as the Jets. To have the opportunity to work with such professionals as Ken, John and Branko will be exciting," Fisk said.

Newcastle Jets slash ticket prices

Newcastle Jets slash ticket prices
14.10.10
Andrew Slevison

A-League club Newcastle Jets have become more fan-friendly by slashing ticket prices for the rest of the season.

Since being taken over by mining and racing magnate Nathan Tinkler, the Hunter Valley outfit have put into place some strong off-field plans to get Newcastle football back to what it once was culminating in cheap family ticket prices.

For the remaining 11 home games, family tickets can be bought for just $100, which means it is just under $10 a game for families to come to EnergyAustralia Stadium to watch the Jets.

This is just another step forward for the club, who yesterday announced that CEO John Tsatsimas had signed on and that former Cronulla Sharks CEO Richard Fisk had joined in a corporate membership role.

Newcastle are away against the Brisbane Roar this weekend but return to EnergyAustralia for the Wednesday, October 27 clash with North Queensland Fury.

Newcastle Jets in marketing shake-up

Newcastle Jets in marketing shake-up
12 Nov 2010
John Davidson

A-league soccer club the Newcastle Jets has undergone a major restructure of its marketing department, with several new senior marketing hires and the departure of its marketing and media manager.

The changes follow the club's buyout by mining magnate Nathan Tinkler, who recently rescued the Jets from financial oblivion.

As part of an attempt to revive the club and raise its profile, Tinkler struck a deal to bring the LA Galaxy team and footballer David Beckham to play against the Jets in Australia in an exhibition match on 27 November.

Former Cronulla Sharks CEO and rugby league marketer Richard Fisk has joined the Jets in the newly-created role of director of membership and corporate. Fisk spent 11 years as general manager of marketing at the Sydney Roosters, and before that spent five years in a marketing role with the Sharks.

Fisk said he joined the Jets because it was "one of the most exiciting opportunities I've ever been offered".

"It's [the Jets'] a unique model in Australian sport," he said.

Eclipse Media, Events and PR managing director Tracy Kearney has also joined the club's executive team to provide strategic direction and advice. Kearney, who also has a role as marketing, promotions and PR manager for Newcastle exhibition company PJ Promotions, formerly worked for Prime Television in marketing and promotions.

AdNews understands the Jets marketing and media manager Andrew Licata has departed the club. Fisk said it was Licata's decision to depart, and that former Australian Rugby League media manager Doug MacDougal is now handling PR for the club.

In the past few weeks, the Jets signed a new shirt sponsorship deal with the Hunter Medical Research Institute where the club pays the Institute $5000 for every home goal and $2500 for every away goal the club scores. The Jets have also announced a reduction in ticket prices and cheaper ticket deals such as reduced family season passes and free entry for children under 15 years old.

Fisk said the Jets were not looking for any more jersey sponsors "at the moment", but said its corporate support had more than doubled since the Beckham game was secured.

"The club's brand value has quadrupuled over night," he said.

I think it was almost 7k but it was a pretty bad game IMO and I couldn't decide whether to watch NSW getting smashed in the cricket or the soccer.

Kevin Muscat expected to announce he is retiring
From: AAP
February 15, 2011 12:02PM

BANNED Melbourne Victory captain Kevin Muscat is expected to confirm tomorrow that he will end his career after this year's Asian Champions League (ACL).

It means the 37-year-old has played his final A-League match, the infamous clash with Melbourne Heart which saw him sent off for a brutal tackle on Heart's Adrian Zahra.

The eight-match suspension handed out for that incident, which ended Zahra's season, also ended any chance Muscat would play again this season, even if Victory reach the grand final.

But the two-time A-League championship skipper has the chance to at least end his career on better terms, as he attempts to guide Victory out of the ACL group stage for the first time in three attempts, with the Asian competition to start on March 1.

Muscat, who has captained Victory from the A-League's 2005-06 inaugural season, is the only player to have been continuously with the club from the start.

Current strikers Archie Thompson and Danny Allsopp and defender Adrian Leijer were all foundation players with the club, but have spent stints overseas.

Muscat has played 122 A-League matches and won the Victory Medal as the club's best player three times, including sharing it with Allsopp in both of their championship seasons.

The tough and aggressive, but skilful defender also represented the Socceroos 51 times over 12 years.

Before joining Victory, he spent a decade playing club football overseas, including an English Premier League stint with Crystal Palace, as well as captaining second-tier club Millwall to the 2004 FA Cup final, although he missed that match with injury.

Muscat, who has already been sharing his playing duties with a Victory assistant coaching role, is expected to become a full-time assistant next season.
