I think some people still think back to the 80's and 90's where the halfback was always your first receiver and would determine if the ball went to the forwards or to the 5/8 and then your 5/8 would create.

Its not like that anymore - both your halves tend to be split one on the left one on the right and your fullback is the connection.

Carney at his best touches the ball as much as JT does so he is controlling the play - he was the master of creating space for a line running second rower or centre - we just didn't have the backs.

Imagine for a second Carney gets the ball 40 metres out goes on run across field showing the ball inside, the defence is holding off because he has some options to pass to. Infield Barba is trailing him and further back holmes is keeping pace. Carney dummys to the centre and gets through the line barba speeds up carney back to barba into the middle of the field and then holmes is through and their fullback needs to make a choice. Barba dummys and goes over (or he passes and holmes goes over).

You would see this play so often on both sides of the field - then when carney hits the centres or back inside to the second rowers the defence isn't looking for it.

Barba, holmes, beale, bird running off Carney - it may not happen but if you have not got a raging hard on you don't know football.

Great stuff Hamsy but you are forgetting one thing. Flanno is still the coach isn't he? Would he allow this? :p

Whilst 5/8 and halfback are similar they are still quite different but i'm not going into that.

I just don't think Barba will ever be a good 5/8, he is a fullback and that's it. We will find it very hard to get rid of him now though.

Do you think Thurston plays any differently playing at 6 as opposed to 7?

It would be pretty funny if the club took him back, lodged the contract with the NRL and they said "nah sorry we ain't going to register him" after saying that we didn't sack him right.

The NRL wouldn't ever deregister him. The comp is missing so much talent nowadays due to the salary cap and the interchange rule that they would want him back.

Thurston is Thurston and will never change the way he plays.

I see the 5/8 as the one feeding the backline whereas the half feeds the forwards and looks after general play kicking.

The problem is if we do take Carney back then where does Barba play? Fullback? Then where does Holmes play? Wing would be a waste of talent.

If Carney comes back we need to get rid of Barba.

We just wait for Carney to do his achilles and then everything's back to normal.

I know right. However I think we again are in the position to take what we can get and at the moment, having him back in the team sounds ok to me.

You had me at Holmes... We need a fan fiction section of the site, this stuff is gold.

I'm just hoping that it happens because it would prove that life is stranger than fiction. What a twist!

(the word 'fiction' wasn't related to you post Sparkles, didn't see your post before I'd put up this one)

Soward plays 5/8 and does all of Penrith's general play kickin, Sezer is the same he is 5/8 but does the organizing and kicking, foran for manly is the one linking to the forwards while DCE looks to the backs (mainly looking to run himself or make space for Stewart).

What you see is definitely the way it was - these days fullbacks are the ones linking to the backs, Moylan, Boyd, Stewart, Slater etc are what the 5/8 used to be.

Yeah I guess there is some truth to that. I guess players just pick their favourite number and stick and stick with it, kinda of like Gallen haha.

I was the same though, always players second row in 12 but moved to lock but never changed the way I played.

Carney has picked up 3 separate injuries in 3 games in England.

He is now going to miss 3 more.

We would be paying him to sit on the sideline.

You couldn't really count the broken ribs.

Knowing our luck if we sign him he will get injury after injury ...he signs somewhere else and he will go injury free for the rest of his career.
