I guess this just shows how hard it is to upgrade guys mid season. This is a lot of deck shuffling to save $40k.

Let's say we wanted to upgrade Maloney by another $100K this year ... We have just freed up $40k, but we'd need to offload someone earning at least $200k to get the remaining $60k of space. (you save his $100k minus the $40k you have to pay his replacement in the top 25)... and that's assuming the new guy doesn't get play NRL and starts getting match payments. The more guys you offload the more likely it becomes that a player in that 21-25 range becomes an NRL player chewing up an extra few thousand per week over the last 12 weeks.

I know you're talking hypotheticals but I hope this isn't what we're doing, he's only half way through his contract as it stands.

I'm OK with upgrading him next year IF he extends, definitely not this year.

Yeah - completely hypothetical - just pointing out that it's not just a matter of dumping a guy on $100k and then giving that money to another bloke. Every change to your top 25 has a flow on effect ... both on the cap and the footy field.

This is absolutely correct. I didn't factor that in. Your numbers are right but your workings are wrong. We don't need to factor in any payments to Walker and Williams because they weren't in the top 25 when they were receiving those payments. We do however need to factor in the $75k they are yet to be paid.

So ...

Your original cap amount was $250k
You have paid $125k to Mortimer and Cherrington ... so free up $125k only
You plan to pay $75k to Walker and Williams between now and the end of the season.

$50k saving

BUT ... the minimum wage for players in the top 25 in the NRL is $80k, so I would suggest that if Walker and Williams are promoted to the top 25 their contracts would need to be upgraded proportionally such that they earn $40k each for the remaining half of the season.

So ... it's actually a $40k cap saving only.

While what you say here is correct, the second tier cap doesn't apply here at all. You can have as many guys outside the top 25 as you like (I think there is a limit of maybe 15 or so), and they can earn as much as you want to pay them (as long as it's less than player #25) but their full salary counts against the second tier cap when they play NRL. If nobody outside the top 25 plays NRL, then the amount of second tier cap space used is zero.

E.g. Let's say Kurt Dillon gets called up and his contract is $60k + $5k match payments ... as soon as he plays 1 NRL game he counts as $65k against the second tier cap. Each subsequent game he plays adds $5k to the cap.

This is why teams teams get in to trouble with the second tier cap when they have injuries etc. and they end up with 3-4 guys outside the top 25 playing a lot of games, and it is also why NRL coaches stick to their top 25 squad at all costs and shelter their second tier cap space for if/when they really need it.

we did the same with Bird and Holmes. Why would it be a big deal with Maloney?

And i dont't have much of a head to start with

Just trying to be helpful mako. Very few fans actually realise what the secondary cap is for. Most think it means that you have a second cap for players outside the top 25 ... thus the term "second tier contract" which just means "someone who is not in the top 25 and their contract is not bound by the $80k minimum wage"

They got upgrades plus an extra year (this year).

Those upgrades probably secured their signature, and both were smart enough to go off contract when the cap was up for review. Lets not forget these guys were on rookie deals
Maloney will probably only re-sign here if he gets an upgrade for next year too, is he worth it? Yes. But we cant be held to ransom cos thos guys manager didnt negotiate a better deal for his client

I'm with you Mako.

Don't get me wrong I'm grateful for all the information but I wonder if there's a more complicated system in sport than the NRL salary cap.

Duckworth-Lewis?

It's not THAT complicated. Top 25 blokes always count and have to be earning $80k minimum. Everyone else doesn't count against the cap, and don't count against the tier 2 cap until they play an NRL game.

Well that sounds simple enough mate but going on your posts on the previous page there's lots of ifs buts and when's with the system.

Please don't get me wrong, more than happy for everyone to get the info and good on you for doing it but I just think it's complicated when you take other factors into account.

The big thing I'm trying to get across there is that you can't just "remove" a player. If you release a guy from your top 25 some other guy takes his spot and the rules now apply to him :)

liicha requesting an immediate release to join the eels before june 30.

apparently if not granted will sign with the eels for next season

also moga set to join the knights. has until june 30 to activate his clause to stay at the broncos for next season but the money knights are offering is way more than what the broncos are offering.

SKD also could join the knights before june 30. if not will head over to super league but preference is to stay in the nrl.

would offer SKD a 1 year deal at sharks for next season. besides the knights don't think anyone is interested. still a good player and could be a real bargain for a year.

I'd take SKD for right wing for this season. Let the Knights have Beale on June 30.
