There was a ****ty rumour page saying the tigers have offered Latimore a contract for 2018... is that even possible?

Is there a chance that Under 20s players will take the spots in the senior squad of the players that have moved on?

I don't know who, but we'll probably want to fill those positions with someone, just in case.

Looks like Jordan Drew is leaving cronulla as well according to his Instagram

What's it say? Some of us don't do Instagram :)

Never mind ... found it. For anyone interested, it says "Loved my time in Sydney , made some mates for life and really enjoyed my footy. Can't wait for what's next".

Never strung more than a few games together. Missed Most of last year. Apparently his last injury (concussion) was pretty bad.

This raises a salary cap question ... the cap is for the highest paid 25 players. The top 23 would be the 23 players named this week, minus Ramien and Mortimer, plus Segyaro. It's anyone's guess who the next 2 highest paid players are, but I would say maybe Jack Williams and Jayden Walker take those two spots from a salary cap PoV. I believe those two are already training with the main squad so that is a salary cap question rather than a training squad question... you would assume that these two players are earning less than the 2 guys we released, so the cap savings are not 100% of the released players' salaries, but rather the difference between those players and the other two, since they assume spot #24 and #25.

e.g. If the two players released (Cherrington and Mortimer) were earning $250k, and Walker and Williams are earning a combined $150k, the actual cap savings are only the difference ($100k).

Jordan Drew wouldn't have been in the top 25 and wouldn't have factored in to this (the tier 2 cap only kicks in when a player actually plays NRL. You can pay the 26th highest-paid player as much as you like, up to $1 less than the 25th highest guy, and it doesn't count against any cap numbers until he actually plays an NRL game).

**

Now, with regard to U20 players joining the squad, that is also anyone's guess. I can imagine that there is already a few of them spending some time with the big boys (I remember under Ricky Stuart that they used to identify 5 guys at the start of the year). Ramien is probably already part of the squad. I'd imagine the U20 rep players are next in line and some of those guys may already be part of the squad (Lumelume, Nikora, Katoa & Magoulias).

Wouldnt it depend on the percentage of season played for example if Cherrington and Mortimer where in the team up till half way point of season half their wages would have already contributed to the cap (125k) likewise with Walker and Williams being (50k). Meaning 200k in total for all 4 players and a net saving of 50k?

yep, you need to take into account what they have been paid already, as the second tier cap counts as a cap and cant be breached

This is absolutely correct. I didn't factor that in. Your numbers are right but your workings are wrong. We don't need to factor in any payments to Walker and Williams because they weren't in the top 25 when they were receiving those payments. We do however need to factor in the $75k they are yet to be paid.

So ...

Your original cap amount was $250k
You have paid $125k to Mortimer and Cherrington ... so free up $125k only
You plan to pay $75k to Walker and Williams between now and the end of the season.

$50k saving

BUT ... the minimum wage for players in the top 25 in the NRL is $80k, so I would suggest that if Walker and Williams are promoted to the top 25 their contracts would need to be upgraded proportionally such that they earn $40k each for the remaining half of the season.

So ... it's actually a $40k cap saving only.

While what you say here is correct, the second tier cap doesn't apply here at all. You can have as many guys outside the top 25 as you like (I think there is a limit of maybe 15 or so), and they can earn as much as you want to pay them (as long as it's less than player #25) but their full salary counts against the second tier cap when they play NRL. If nobody outside the top 25 plays NRL, then the amount of second tier cap space used is zero.

E.g. Let's say Kurt Dillon gets called up and his contract is $60k + $5k match payments ... as soon as he plays 1 NRL game he counts as $65k against the second tier cap. Each subsequent game he plays adds $5k to the cap.

This is why teams teams get in to trouble with the second tier cap when they have injuries etc. and they end up with 3-4 guys outside the top 25 playing a lot of games, and it is also why NRL coaches stick to their top 25 squad at all costs and shelter their second tier cap space for if/when they really need it.
