If we can get Gibbs playing good enough footy (in his first year here before the Achilles) to be mentioned as a possible option for State of Origin, I'd back us to get Hunt playing well again.

But *meh*, I don't think we need another prop, we already spend enough of our cap on that department. Even if we lose a couple of blokes like Vave/Arona/Robinson, we still have D. Fifita, Prior and Tagataese under contract and Gal/Fifita will play big minutes if they get on the field.

The question I guess is - who is we?

Is 'we' our old strength and conditioning guy, was it Peter Sharp, was it Flanno?

People don't suddenly improve as a forward just by putting on a Sharks jersey.

Two of those guys are gone and the 3rd is in some doubt.

Not taking the piss out of you Sutty by the way, it just seems to be a commonly held belief that's all.

Well, whilst that's a point, at the end of the day the performance and ability of a prop is as much the mental side of things (The willingness to do extra fitness work during pre-season) as much as the work of the individual strength and conditioning coach.

Just as Manly have a certain culture (You know, of being competent, hard-working and well drilled even if the players hate each other), we have a culture of having workhorse props. Just as Manly's culture continued on with Hasler and his support staff leaving, ours will continue on in this regard until the style of our play changes.

Just looking back at the props we've had the past 5 or 6 years, originally we had Snowden and Douglas, and then Gibbs in 2012, and then Fifita hit top form 2013.

Snowden and Douglas = Elkin and Sticky Stuart
Gibbs = Elkin and Flanno
Fifita = David Boyle and Flanno

There's no common denominator between Snowden/Douglas and Fifita apart from being the Blue/White/Black.

Yeah maybe.

It could even have a bit to do with Gal demanding the effort from them. If it's a cultural thing it needs to be transferred by someone.

Yeah, you're probably right. Gal seems the sort of bloke you'd probably go the extra yard to try and impress if you're a prop.

Totally agree, and it goes back a long way too. No idea why. It's why recruiting out of form props makes sense for us. We can't develop a half back to save our lives but we consistently have a forward pack that rarely gets beaten.

Sharks should do a package deal with Beale and Farrell.

Even also Stockwell and Hunt.

Isn't it about the time of year where we hear Inglis is unhappy at Souths and Cronulla are farvourites to sign him? Or is that normally just after season's end?

I tried that one earlier this season and no one took the bait haha. Greg Bird always works a pretty well.

The last 2 years I beg to differ. We're always kicking from well inside our own half and the opposition forward pack marches down field at will.

And that's the reason why I think we need to buy some props. And we should be looking for the kind that have traditionally prospered here. Lesser known yet to peak or well known out of form.
