Pretty much underachieved with that Roosters side, then sweet FA from there.
Inheritated Stewy Raper's Shark side then we went south.
Couldn't handle the heat at the Eels
Wasted good opportunities with those Raiders sides.
Surely he gets the arse if they don't play finals this season!

Dunno mate, maybe he's the Shaun Marsh of NRL coaches.

Bozo is the only one out of that bunch that was a great player though which is what Cap said. I can't think of too many more great players that made good coaches.

Sticky was very good but there's mo way in hell he's a good coach. From memory he's made the finals once in his last 7 or 8 seasons.

Depends on what you consider a "great player" I guess. I'd say Johnny Lang, Wayne Bennett and Phil Gould were all great players in their day.

I obviously have a different interpretation of great than others.

That's what I was asking mate. Do you set the bar at immortals? If that's the case obviously Bozo and Provan win hands down over Wally and Mal.

Bennett played for Queensland and Australia FFS. It's not like he was fringe first grader like Flano, Bellamy or Robinson.

Yeah I never saw him play but he must have been pretty decent.

A bit lower than immortals.

All good. I just think the word 'great' gets thrown around far too much in sport these days.

Michael Hagan was a pretty handy player and won a comp in his first year as a coach.

He did have Joey Johns in his squad, though.

Mate I am old and I have no recollection of Bennett playing for Queensland or Australia. There mustn’t have been many games.

From 1970, Bennett played football for Warwick, and also in the Brisbane Rugby League premiership for Past Brothers, Ipswich and Souths. He was a talented wing and goal-kicker, and represented Queensland 9 times between 1971 and 1973 ( including 7 games against New South Wales).[SUP][8][/SUP] Here Bennett was coached by Bob Bax, who he has credited as being a major influence in his own later coaching career.[SUP][9][/SUP] Bennett also played two tour matches for Australia on the 1972 tour of New Zealand. Also in 1972 Bennett played for Toowoomba in the last ever Bulimba Cup Final against Brisbane.[SUP][10][/SUP] After that he had a spell playing for Huddersfield in England alongside fellow Queenslander and future brother-in-law Greg Vievers.[SUP][11][/SUP] He played for Brisbane's Brothers club and in 1974 under coach Paul Broughton reached the Grand Final which they lost to Fortitude Valley.

A 70's winger (blokes who hung around footballers) who got 2 starts in a tour (I don't know who they were against) and 9 games for QLD before "proper" Origin. Good achievements no doubt but hardly a great - wouldn't be known now if he never coached.

Wayne Bennett was not as good a player as Ricky Stuart. Yes, he's a much much better coach, but some of you guys are rewriting ancient NRL history to suggest that Bennett was among the best. Ricky's mediocrity as a coach should not diminish his accomplishments as a player.

Ricky was a great player. He's a rubbish coach.

Ricky is in the top 5 halfbacks I've seen. His prime was before my time but have seen a lot of footage from my old mans old footy recordings.

For me it's

Johns
Thurston
Cronk/Stuart/Langer (probably that order but I wouldn't be fussed in any other)
