Im confused as to how it could be included in the cap if its not a player payment. Is there any precedent for that?

Souths and Warriors transfer fees for Burgess and Tompkins didn't count on their caps

Thats what I thought, not sure where the talk of it counting came from.

It does count against the cap. Not sure about Tompkins but for Burgess the NRL made it exempt as an exception.

Edit - just read up on Tompkins. The transfer fee paid by the NZ Warriors pre-dated the NRL changing the salary cap rules to include transfer fees.

It just seems ridiculous as the transfer fee isnt going to the player and the cap is for player payments.

Agree, makes no sense whatsoever. Hardly surprising though coming from the NRL.

The wording is that transfer fees are "regulated by inclusion in the cap or other machanisms". I think this is NRL speak for "we will waive it for a marquee player".

In the context of protecting clubs from over spending it makes sense for transfer fees to be included.

I don't think that's fair at all. There are many ways a club can overspend completely unrelated to players. It either should be included for all instances, or none imo. Completely unfair it wasn't included for Burgess but will probably be included for anyone that signs Seggy.

Maybe he should go play for the Kumuls.
Do you mean the Hunters?

Is that part of QLD ? ;)
Surely a Smith replacement needs to be sought .
He's already a Queenslander mate. Moved to Cairns as a kid and played footy there until he was signed by the Rabbitohs at 17. He is listed on the QRL web site as eligible for the Qld team :)

Hard-hitting New Zealand Warriors forward Charlie Gubb is desperate to leave the club and has requested a release.

Unhappy and wanting a new start elsewhere, Gubb is unsure where his future lies as the Warriors are refusing to return the calls of Gubb's agent, who understandably wants an answer on his client's future.

Gubb has spoken to former Warriors teammates and current Cronulla players, Chad Townsend and Jayson Bukuya, about the possibility of joining the Sharks.

Now, I'm not sure how well I understand football but the reason I want Seggy is to put a bit more attention on the middle of the ruck to create more chances for the guys on the outside.

With guys like Nu, Braley & Cherrington running from dummy half I feel it may give the opposition a bit of comfort in the middle and let them focus from the halves outwards in comparison to '16 and what Ennis offered our team.

If we weren't to get Seggy I would be open to the idea of getting another forward on our books.

I haven't seen much of Charlie but if he could keep the ruck a bit more honest when Fifita and Prior go off I could be open to the idea.

If the money is there for one of the other though, I'd go for Seggy...
