Cronulla’s Andrew Fifita to stay in NRL as Bulldogs lead the race to sign the prop
THREE years ago, Andrew Fifita was playing park football in reserve grade.
Yesterday, the Cronulla international spent his entire Saturday afternoon weighing up a $4 million dollar dilemma — whether to stay at the Sharks or join rivals Canterbury or South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Off-contract at the Sharks this season, Fifita has also attracted interest from the Australian Rugby Union, who were prepared to fork out $1 million a year to lure the tearaway forward back to the game he once played as a junior.
However, following a series of meetings and phone calls with his manager Ben Johnston, Fifita will announce on Tuesday that he is staying in the NRL.
Fifita has held back announcing any decision until after the Sharks host the Gold Coast at Remondis Stadium tomorrow night.
While Bulldogs chief executive Raelene Castle was happy to confirm publicly Fifita “was someone we are talking too’’, the reality is, the Canterbury club are quietly confident of securing the most prized-signature in the game.
Offering a head-spinning four-year contract of more than $800,000, not including representative bonuses, Canterbury are believed to have edged narrowly in front of Cronulla, the club that resurrected Fifita’s career in 2012.
The Rabbitohs are outsiders in the three-way battle, with the Sydney Roosters never a serious contender. The Sharks definitely haven’t given up on the NSW Origin and World Cup-winning prop. Early last week, the Sharks appeared out of the equation all together, until Cronulla officials upped the ante late yesterday with an offer that The Sunday Telegraph has learned is the biggest in the club’s history.
Fifita’s priority from the beginning of his negotiations has been to stay in the Sutherland Shire — at the right price. Signed from the Wests Tigers by suspended Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan, loyalty to the Sharks — and in particular Flanagan — is a big part of Fifita’s decision.
He also shares a strong relationship with former Tigers players Bryce Gibbs, Beau Ryan, John Morris and Chris Heighington, who have all joined the Sharks over the past four seasons.
After a remarkable 2013 season, which included playing in all three Origin matches for NSW, a World Cup win and being named Dally M Prop of the Year, Fifita said any contract decision would be made with his family at heart.
“I will have a look at them (the offers) and do what is best for my family,’’ Fifita said. “The Sharks have been very good to me and made me into the person I am today.”
The dilemma for the Dogs is how they fit Fifita into a star-studded pack that already boasts Sam Kasiano, Frank Pritchard, James Graham and Greg Eastwood.
