Clubs' cash grab stalls formation of Independent Commission on November 1 after NRL Partnership refuses to pay up

HOPES of the Independent Commission being formed on November 1 all but collapsed yesterday with the NRL partnership committee rejecting demands from cash-strapped clubs for increased funding.

The clubs had wanted the game to plunge itself into debt and give them an advance on the next television broadcast deal to pay for a $34 million increase in annual grants.

"The partnership committee made a unanimous decision today that it would not be prepared to borrow money to fund increased grants to the clubs,'' News Limited and ARL representatives said via a statement yesterday.

"Nor would the partnership committee entertain a commitment to make a pre-payment of television revenue that is yet to be negotiated.''

It sets up a fiery showdown between all stakeholders next Tuesday when they will meet to discuss club funding.

I turned on Channel 10 news in Brisbane and the first Sports story was the Broncos extending two of their players, and the Carney story was second and only went for a few seconds. God I hate Brisbane so much some times!
