Have you boys stuck with it?

Chad/Snow you boys still going strong?

I hit my first speed bump a last monday (hurt my ankle playing basketball) got back out for my first run after it yesterday but pulled up pretty quickly as the ankle wasn't quite ready. I'm back under the 100kg mark though.

Hey Deano, yep still going, bit slower now though but down to 115kg, only 5kg away from goal.
It's been bloody hard over the past few weeks and I've found that even something as small as a sausage sandwich with a small squirt of bbq sauce can put your results out.
Still walking at least 12,000 plus steps a day and cutting out soft drink and just drinking water.

Hopefully by Round 2 against the Dragons I'll be at goal and maybe looking to go down a bit more.

Ev and yourself won't recognise each other at the Saints game.

Yeah, i've always been impressed with people I see who run regularly.

I can't really find the motivation to do it. For me to be motivated, I need to have context to my exercising, for example playing sport, or cycling into work.

I'm onto week 6 of the program. Starting to get a bit challenging and hard to stick to a schedule.
Good stuff mate, I've pulled up at week seven. Hurt my ankle and then strained my quad at AFL training. Just taking it easy at the moment doing weights until the quad is healed.

I motivate myself though my sport and keeping weight loss in mind. It's tough but you do eventually start enjoying it and hate the fact you can't do it when you're on a break.

I'm an avid runner, I wouldn't say I'm overly talented but I sure do enjoy it... Well most of the time.

If you're anything like me, there are plenty if negative, self loathing and doubting thoughts in my head, the full blown exhaustion from a run is a great way to silence them.

My favourite distance is probably 3k then puke.

Haha, atleast you are having a go, when you do the 3k is it on road, track (grass or tartan etc) & how quick is your quickest time hitman?

I like running on the ashphalt track/path near my house. I've tried other terrain, but uneven ground with slippery gravel on the track doesn't agree with me. My best time is 11:14. That's on a good day though, when I feel crappy it's quite a bit slower.

I'm really working on my technique, I've often wondered what is more optimal, short strides with more steps, or long strides with fewer steps? My mate who runs says short steps....

It's my goal to get as close to the 4 min mile as possible, will more than likely never happen especially being as heavy as I am, but if I could get around 4:30 that would be cool as.

I just spent up on skins.... Sorry for the humanity that must witness me wear it.... lol

Short steps is definitely what you want. You should be aiming for about 180 steps in a minute.

Yes it's the same as cycling, higher cadence is definitely more efficient.

Wow, I was about to offer the complete opposite advice Deano, while I am definitely no runner my two older kids are, they specialize in 800mm up to middle distance.

I've lost count the amount of times someone has said or I have over heard people say about my kids have the perfect action for middle distance type running, ie, long stride & kick, I was under the impression the sprinters have smaller/quicker steps.

Re Hitman, good work mate, re the 3k, keep ticking off those milestones, my daughters are big on that with their coach, like hitting the 12 minute mark, tick, 11-30 mark, tick, 11 minute mark tick.

My eldest is really dedicated as wants to run as close to 9-20 as she can for State Little A's next month, my middle baby likes her running but does it more as a hobby plus her older sister does it so she got into it that way, she wants to break the 11 minute mark again (only done it once so far).

To add to that, steps per minute doesn't really matter, it's more to do with where your feet are striking the ground. You want them striking underneath your centre of gravity, that is, your hips. Striking forward of that is what causes injuries.

Yeah that's true, 180 per a minute is a guide I was given to try to have me stepping in a better area as I always had rather long steps. I used getting my steps up as a way of training my body into the right area.

ok, you boys seem to know your stuff more than me, I've never been a runner, more into the ball sports thing, I've just taken a interest since the kids started, there's lots to it, technique, tactics, mental aspect, revovery etc.
