Injury update - Sydney Roosters

Injury update
9/08/2010 11:00:00 AM

The Sydney Roosters have received some mixed injury news after the narrow loss to the competition leaders on Sunday.

Jason Ryles (ribs), Mose Masoe (mild concussion) and Todd Carney (mild concussion) will be available for selection for this Friday night’s game away to the Cronulla Sharks.

However, Kane Linnett (knee), Joseph Leilua (thigh) and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (calf) will all spend some time on the sideline.

Linnett suffered a medial ligament injury to his right knee, which is likely to end his season with the expected recovery between four and six weeks.

Leilua’s corked thigh and Waerea-Hargreaves’ strained calf are likely to keep them out for one to two weeks, and with the short turnaround this week has the medical staff convinced they won’t be fit for selection.

Mitchell Aubusson will be continually monitored during the week as he recovers from a left shoulder injury endured in the win over Parramatta Eels a little over a week ago.

Toyota Cup players Ben Jones (calf) and Sam Brunton (shoulder) are likely to miss next week’s match in the Shire.

Jones has not played since the win over the Eels due to a calf strain and Brunton will have scans later today on his left shoulder after he came from the field during the second half against the St George Illawarra Dragons.

In further injury news, three players from the NRL full time squad played a part in Newtown’s surge to the top of the New South Wales Cup with their win on Saturday as they make the journey back from injury.

Hooker James Aubusson slotted in at halfback and played 65 minutes after he had surgery on a troublesome ankle.

Prop Lopini Paea got through an hour as his comeback from a shoulder injury looks promising as the NRL forward pack suffered more casualties.

Winger Sonny Tuigamala, who has not seen first grade this season, got through the entire match with no complainants after recovering from an ankle injury.

Tom Symonds was also supposed to be part of the side that beat the Western Suburbs Magpies but an ankle injury at training on Thursday night has him likely to be out for a month.

Other full time squad members Anthony Cherrington and Boyd Cordner who both had knee surgery before the season begun on ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments are well down the roads to recovery but will not be used this season.

I just noticed that we're also going to be wearing a special jersey in this game for call to arms. All the black on the jersey is going to be yellow, as will the numbers on the back.

It's not often a match against struggling Cronulla is deemed season-defining, but Sydney Roosters coach Brian Smith will read plenty into how his side bounces back against the Sharks following their narrow loss to St George Illawarra.

The Roosters had been on a five-match winning run before being felled by the Dragons 19-12 in front of a big SCG crowd on Sunday, the loss compounded by injuries to Kane Linnett, Jason Ryles and Joseph Leilua.

Smith took the setback well, explaining it was good learning experience so close to the finals.

But he won't be so forgiving if the Roosters don't aim up against 15th-placed Cronulla, who thrashed the Tricolours 42-18 back in round 13, at Toyota Stadium on Friday night.

"It was never going to be a turning point if we won ... and I certainly hope it's not a turning point now that we've lost it," Smith said of Sunday's loss.

"A little bit will depend on how we react to it."

"We built ourselves just a little bit of a cushion - if it's possible to do that in the NRL - by winning five games in a row."

"It gave us the opportunity to really treat it as a fore-runner of what we'll play over the coming weeks."

"By the coming weeks, I mean starting with Cronulla next Friday night. We've got first-hand experience (of) knowing that they can play that spoiling sort of football."

"(They're) hard, physical (with a) good kicking game, so we've got to rejuvenate ourselves in four days."

Roosters skipper Braith Anasta was also confident the loss to the Dragons could turn into a positive - as long as his young side heeded the lessons learned in defeat.

"It definitely had a semi-finals feel to it," he said.

"I think that was a good experience for a lot of our guys and I think we probably needed that."

"I think we can learn a lot from that game."

Even the injuries to Linnett, Ryles and Leilua were seen as part of the education process.

"That's what we have to learn about, how to deal with those things," Smith said.

"They're all the things that can crop up in a play-off game and you've still got to win."

Anasta demands ruthless Roosters

Anasta demands ruthless Roosters
August 9, 2010 - 7:44PM

Sydney Roosters captain Braith Anasta has demanded his side become more ruthless, believing that is the hard lesson the needs to be learned from NRL rivals St George Illawarra.

The Roosters are licking their wounds after Sunday's bruising 19-12 loss to the Dragons at the SCG with a short turnaround for Friday's clash with Cronulla.

"We can learn a lot from St George and the way they are, they're a professional team and they're a tough team and they're pretty ruthless," Anasta told reporters on Monday.

"We were a little bit impatient at times yesterday and probably took the foot off the accelerator a bit at times.

"We're a young team and we're learning and it's up to us to turn it into a positive and not a negative."

The Roosters had won five straight before Sunday's slip and believe they are gaining on the ladder-leading Dragons who flogged them 28-6 on Anzac Day.

"The Dragons are the benchmark and their defence is the best in the competition," Anasta said.

"They're pretty much ruthless for the 80 minutes and you know they're going to keep coming and coming and you've got to fight with them for that full 80 minutes.

"If we do meet them in the semi-finals we can take confidence from yesterday, we know we can improve so we certainly feel we'd have a really good shot against them."

Anasta was one of the few Roosters stars willing to talk on Monday but denied the players had adopted a siege mentality after the loss, and the resurfacing of prop Jason Ryles' critics.

"We're disappointed about the loss and you walk away from it and everyone goes, `It was a good effort and you did well' and all this sort of stuff," Anasta said.

"The bottom line is we lost and we didn't get the two points and we can't be happy with that, we can't be happy with losing and we want to win next week."

Centre Kane Linnett will miss 4-6 weeks after suffering medial ligament damage in his right knee.

Other injury fears have eased with Ryles (ribs) and back Joseph Leilua (corked quad) both possible starters against the Sharks at Toyota Stadium.

Second rower Mitch Aubusson (shoulder) is likely to return a week later for the round 24 clash with Gold Coast.

Anasta rushed to the defence of Ryles, who gave away a penalty for his over-zealous handling of Jamie Soward and dropped a simple pass after a kick-off as the Roosters mounted a comeback.

"He might have given one penalty away yesterday but he's great for the rest of the game," Anasta said. "It didn't cost us.

"He's been outstanding, he's probably been one of the best buys in the competition."

Roosters Will Pay This Daffodil Day

Roosters will pay this Daffodil Day
By James Phelps
August 10, 2010 12:00AM

THE Sharks will be taking more than just a new jersey into a rare free-to-air television match against the Roosters on Friday night.

After unveiling a one-off yellow strip to help the Cancer Council raise funds and awareness for men affected by the disease, Sharks hardman Kade Snowden declared Cronulla would also be taking a new attitude into the match after an emotional conclusion to Saturday night's flogging by the Warriors.

"We really let [coach] Shane Flanagan down. He sat us down after the match and told us what he thought but he didn't have to," he said.

"We knew we had let him down and we will be going out to make up for it on Friday night."

In the first two matches under Flanagan, who took over from Ricky Stuart, the Sharks were unlucky to escape without the points.

But on Saturday night they produced one of their worst performances of the year, prompting a "man-to-man" chat from Flanagan.

"We have played so well since he took over and then on the weekend we just let him and ourselves down," Snowden said.

"We have to come out this week and be a lot better.

"We had been taking steps forward and Flano told us we took four steps backwards against the Warriors."

Despite their position on the table, Snowden said the Sharks would topple the Roosters on Friday night and reminded the tri-colours of the "hiding" Cronulla gave them earlier this year.

"We gave them a hiding last game," Snowden said.

"It is not like we can't do it. We will be here for a big one and I reckon we can win."

Fellow prop Luke Douglas said the Sharks were intent on upsetting the Roosters in their first free-to-air Friday night match of the year.

"We haven't had a Friday night game for a while so we will be pumped. We will have the little extra motivation," Douglas said.

"Everyone will be watching so it is pretty big for us."

Wearing the one-off jersey with a lashing of yellow for the NRL call to arms round, Douglas said the Sharks would dedicate the match to John Mannah, who spent most of the year fighting lymphoma, a form of cancer.

Mannah is back playing the NSW Cup and could push his way into the NRL side by the end of the year.

"One in two men gets cancer," Douglas said.

"It is a big deal and something we are trying to make everyone aware of.

"Johnny is an ambassador for the Cancer Council and we all know what he has been through. He is one the mend now but we are hoping to help raise awareness."

Chooks lose trio but Ryles, Mini OK

Chooks lose trio but Ryles, Mini OK

Margie McDonald
August 10, 2010 12:00AM

THERE was mixed news for the Roosters yesterday -- three players are sidelined with injuries but two sidestepped the judiciary and suspension.

The injury news could have been much worse as Jason Ryles (ribs), Mose Masoe (mild concussion) and Todd Carney (mild concussion) were cleared to play against Cronulla on Friday night.

But facing a few weeks in rehab are centre Kane Linnett (knee), utility Joseph Leilua (cork) and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (calf).

The worst of those is Linnett, who has medial ligament damage to his right knee and is looking at four to six weeks out. There are just four regular season games left.

Mitch Aubusson (shoulder) is no certainty to play the Sharks and, with the short turn-around this week, medical staff will be hesitant to bring him back early.

But better news came when Ryles (dangerous head contact) and Anthony Minichiello (dangerous contact) were handed low graded charges for tackles on Jamie Soward and Brett Morris respectively. They are free to play by taking an early plea.

Ryles had attracted criticism after Sunday's loss to St George Illawarra for giving away a penalty in the Soward incident and dropping the ball as the Roosters tried to regain some momentum.

"He might have given one penalty away yesterday, but was great for the rest of the game," Braith Anasta said at the Roosters recovery session yesterday.

"It didn't cost us. He's been outstanding. He's probably been one of the best buys in the competition."

In other injury news, Newcastle halfback Jarrod Mullen damaged his ribs in Sunday's 30-6 win over Canterbury, and further scans today will reveal the extent.

He is certain to be named to face the Warriors in Auckland on Sunday, but will have to prove his fitness by Thursday before the Knights fly out on Friday.

As Scott Dureau (knee) was unable to play NSW Cup last Saturday and Ben Rogers (ankle) is already sidelined, Newcastle is short of halves. Fullback Kurt Gidley has already moved upfield to five-eighth to help out.

North Queensland confirmed yesterday Johnathan Thurston will miss six to eight weeks due to torn ligaments in his right ankle.

As his season is over, the Test halfback had surgery last night for painful soreness in both feet.

Orthopaedic surgeons say he should be fit for the Four Nations series starting on October 23.

Gold Coast's Greg Bird (hamstring) is resigned to slotting into the backrow to keep try-scoring machine Mat Rogers at No 6.

"Maty has been killing it at five-eighth. I'm hoping I can squeeze somewhere into the team and not cause disruption -- probably the backrow I'd say but at this stage I don't really know," Bird said after running freely with the team at Robina yesterday.

Argh!!! I hope we don't get into this cycle again of the coach/players having to beat themselves up in the media after every game!

That's better.
