I was listening to a podcast the other day with Cameron Smith and he said that the days of the big hits are pretty much over as they are too risky.

His style was to run up quickly and basically grab the runner chest height to slow down and wrap ball up and let the B and C defenders bring the player down.

This also used less energy than trying to do a big ball and all smash.

Or we could put velcro on there shorts and some strip's of material hanging off them....

Tearing strips off in the game... Would make it consistent with the post game chat anyway!

But that's an interesting take. Less locking the ball up maybe

Is it just me or they going way over the top with crusher tackle charges now?

I get the traditional tackle where the defender would basically jump off the ground and fall on their neck but the latest round of charges are simple tackles where, for a split second the body is leaning on the neck region before sliding down.

Very easy to fake injuries of this nature.

Next we will have all players turning their backs at the last minute when running. Pretty hard to avoid 'crushers' in these tackles.

Maybe Woods may yet be of a benefit!

Yeah - there was one of these on Saturday (Titans/Dogs I think) where the tackler has him front on and the bloke spins around and falls to the ground. 100% on the ball-carrier.

Yeah it's shocking, like half or more occur from attackers actions and most seem to heal remarkably from the whistle.
Some onus needs to go on attacking player to not put themselves in a dangerous position. Make it 2 mins off if video review deems no untoward action by defenders so trainer can properly ensure your neck is fine.
The chucking their weight down onto the back of the head ones that are actually dangerous are extremely rare.

the crusher tackle on teig was bull****, vaughan ran backwards the ****in dog

Most of them are bull****. The one Chad 'did' last week was laughable.

They're going way too far in this area. It's actually becoming embarrassing.

Yep. All a player has to do is hold his neck at the back after the tackle and the refs penalise it.

Absolutely laughable.

Just get up and play the ****ing thing.

I wish he fought it. The more players that fight these stupid crusher tackles and get off will eventually filter down to game day decisions.

If they keep taking the early plea they are vindicating the decision.

Everyone should fight their charge. At the rate they're charging ****s it'd take 4mths to get through a weekend at judiciary.

We rarely seem to fight them.

Nrl might have to introduce the No Fault Stand Down policy the way it is heading.

It's also filtering down to other levels.

Qld Cup had a guy sent off on the weekend for something that was a borderline penalty 2 weeks ago - and yesterday I watched an u14's school game and saw a kid get 10 in the bin because a player got tackled low, fell to the ground and hit is face on a stationary defenders open palm.

They might as well chamge rules where you can only tackle below waste and the runner is not allowed to offload once the defender makes contact.

Just ridiculous.

I get the direct head clip (like Dugans / Talakai) or even ones where you go for a big hit and it bounces up off the ball / shoulder and hits his head.

Or the actual crusher tackles (ie deliberate slamming down on neck with full body weight)

Other than that everything else should be left to match review.

Vaughan's, Wilton, Braileys were a joke.

Match review should also be reviewing where players milk for a penalty (ie Chambers / Vaughan) and suspend them. Not hard to tell for these blatant ones.

NRL might have to rethink if there is enough talent for 2 extra teams if squads are going to need to be 40+ due to incidental high contact and defenders getting themselves in bad positions

This is so dumb.

1. Adjust the rules for more ball in play - check
2. Sit around and pat each other on the back for making the game "more entertaining" - check
3. Now adjust the rules to encourage players to stop play and have the video ref intervene - check
4. Platoon this in to making the MRC charges ridiculous, so it is more likely that talent gets removed from games - check
5. Continue to disadvantage players who tackle low - check
6. Do nothing to address majority of junior refs not applying safety rules - check
7. Claim that the rule changes are to make mums feel good about little Johnny playing junior footy - check
8. Sit around and pat each other on the back for making the game more entertaining "and safer"

Um... excuse me Peter... we've now got more stoppages and less good players on the park than we did in 2019.

6. Scratch heads and wonder why ratings have dropped and subsequent broadcast deals are way down due to less talent on the field.
