Now down to second on the missed tackles list!

TBF a lot of those he hits hard enough to stop the opponent but bounce dog himself and we clean it up easily. Won’t always be a cleanup player there though, and still better to hit that hard and stick

That was a problem with Capewell but he seem to have sorted it.

You’re talking about Toby right? Not Tolman.

Tolman has 117 tackles for the year with 7 miss @ 92% no surprises there you expect that or even better from him, Woods isn't far off this mark either

The real suprise is Billy M who has our highest tackle %
70 tackles 3 miss @ 94%

Rudolf is in the low 80% which isn't great, has the second highest missed tackles in our team behind Chad and the most ineffective tackles
He makes up for it with his carries though and I have no doubt he and the coaches will work on improving his D over time

Rudolf and Woods will generally be facing fresher players as well as they are starting players though the bench players have to deal with tired team mates around them in the defensive line

This has always been the case with Toby. He struggles with discipline and defence, but his carries get him noticed.

When he won MoM in the Q Cup GF he was indeed the best player on the park for the for the 30 minutes, but was awful after that. Dropped balls, penalties, missed tackles. You name it. The judges had made their mind up by half time though.

It kind of irks me that he gets so many 3-2-1 points on here almost every week when it's so obvious that his all around game is still coming together. He's not our best player; he's a work in progress.

That's interesting Burgo, who do you think is our best player? I assume you mean our current best player, not those on the injured list.

It's a popular vote... sometimes how a player performs for 80 minutes comes into it, too. It's interesting to see though, how people interpret a performance based on their feelings about a player

I both agree and also vote for him a lot.
He has some great runs and most of his misses are hard contacts that don't get punished so he really stands out.

He's 12th overall in PCM (Woods actually 14th overall, Tolman 39th) and 15th overall for average PCM (Teig 10th, Woods 17th, Katoa 42nd, Tolman 48th)
And he makes those PCMs in a more aggressive style vs Woods and Tolman who tend to drag tacklers along with them slowly and thus less likely to get fast PTB.

I'm also a big believer in that a lot of the work by the halves and backs comes from the platform built by the forwards so being one of the more (positively) noticeable forwards helps.

An old saying which Yeo actually dropped to Matty Johns the other week - the forwards determine who win, the backs just by how much.

He is definitely going to slip a bit in how I am rating him if he doesn't clean up his tackling over next couple weeks though, a month under his belt is plenty of time for him to start addressing that.

I don’t think we have a standout best player. I just mean that this particular player gets a lot of credit for being one of the best ball runners, but his deficiencies elsewhere go unnoticed.

E.g. Against Parra...

Toby gives up a penalty, Parra scores down Chad’s edge. Forum says Chad sucks
Toby drops the ball, leads to Magoulias giving up a penalty in front of the posts. Forum says Billy sucks
Eels attack the right edge, Toby ineffective tackle, Eels offload, Chad misses a tackle on try scorer. Forum says Chad sucks

Toby sweeps the 3-2-1 vote

... and yeah bort - in most games it’s the forwards who have a bigger say in a result. Especially Yeo - that guy is a big reason why Cleary looks so good.

Sorry - should get back to Tolman

Didn't get any votes from me!
Because I didn't vote...
Wanted to give votes to Woods... but he had three errors, also liked Tracey and Brailey. Was gunna think about it and go back to it but never did.
Did give him my three the first two weeks though before I started getting a bit more suspect on him about these defensive issues.

I think it’s just a footy thing. People notice the players who make stand out plays. Being simply “good” won’t get you noticed as much as being outstanding at one thing, even if you are poor at others.

This is something that’s obvious, but still surprises me sometimes (e.g. when someone tells you the big kid in your team is your best player because he scored 3 tries today, but you know that he can’t tackle and that your best player is actually the kid half his size standing next to him in the defensive line making the big kid look good)

Twisting this back to Tolman now...

This is something that really goes unnoticed with him. Tolman does the little things right. He does a lot of work off the ball, has a pass in his game, and is a really reliable defender (I think you’ll find that many of his missed tackles were late against Parra - when the whole team was falling apart).

Yep Tolman has made a whole career out of being an underappreciated work horse / toiler.

Pretty funny he copped flack from Bulldogs fans in a similar way Gallen used to from other fans (including some Sharks fans) about taking a hitup on the 4th.
(I know you know this but) It's being done for a reason and the fact you consistently saw Gallen doing it (for us or rep) or Tolman (for Bulldogs) is a credit to them, especially when both are decent odds to have already had a hitup in any given set.
I actually saw Bulldogs fans laughing that now we have a replacement for Gallens pointless hitups on the 4th.

These players know that on 4th there is a game plan expectation for a forward to work to a certain point and get a quick PTB and they make sure they are are there to provide that for the team.
Far too many people think Paul Gallen consistently took 4th tackle hitups because he is a greedy idiot and don't realise coach of club, state and country were all happy for him to do it for a reason.
Similar to the assumption Chad mustn't be doing a good job of helping keep our team executing game plan if he himself isn't providing personal highlights I guess...

Tolman is closing in on 300 games for a reason when plenty of flashier or 'higher ceiling' players have come and gone in far less.

Tolman is Jake Turbo but $750k cheaper lol

80% as good at 20% the cost
