You are right. There was a time where there was a live game on the Saturday afternoon and a delayed game on the Sunday evening. I loved Sunday afternoon games. I'd have my radio at the game to get the around the ground scores and half-time/full-time summaries. Even at the games the ground announcer would go through scores from around the grounds to boos and cheers. Good times.

This was awesome. At Broncos games the biggest cheers/boos were reserved for whatever was happening in the Manly games.

As a young kid my Sundays mostly consisted of playing footy in the yard, listening to whatever game was on, and our backyard game would instantly pause any time we heard "around the grounds". Then I'd watch the Sunday game and set the VHS up to tape "Late Night League" with Ian Maurice, so I could watch all of the tries from the weekend when I woke up Monday morning.

This wasn't the game where Coleman gave away a penalty 10m out in front his own tryiline was it? I remember him playing the ball then pushing our marker over. Win kick the goal and win the game.

Also, just noticed our goal kicker (Arthur Pappas). Gee we have had some suspect goal kickers.

To be honest mate, I can't remember the details. I just remember it being close, and tough - and I remember thinking Bronko Djura was a cool name.

It was 1988. The kicker was Sean Watson. I was actually at the Swans game next door when it was unfolding.

Loved those ABC games. I started recording those games on VHS back in the late 80s early 90s as teenager. Used to watch them over and over.

We take it for granted now as we see every game live each week. Back then you were lucky to see the Sharks play on TV a couple times a year.

They were the best, so good. Warren Boland, Bomber Peard.

Great memories.

Is that the game where ET just took a hitup from 10-15m out in the middle and put on the swerve to beat a few guys and score under the black dot? I remember that one. Great game.

Here are two that are special to me.

1989, Round 18 vs Souths.

and

1989 Playoff for 5th vs Broncos
https://www.rugbyleagueproject.org/seasons/nswrl-1989/playoff/cronulla-vs-brisbane/summary.html

These are probably the two games that sealed my fate as me a Rugby League fan, and a Sharks fan. Until then I was just a kid getting dragged along to Broncos games with my Dad, I didn't really know much of what was going on, and the only thing I really knew about players outside Brisbane was what could be read on the backs of footy cards. That Souths game was the first RL game I remember watching on my own. After that I was hooked on ET, McGaw, Russell and Speechley, and Rugby League in general.

Once I watched the playoff for 5th vs Broncos, I added Docking, Wilson and Miller to the list. Sadly the Sharks lost to the Raiders the following week, but since the 1989 GF was such a cracker the game now had me. I made my parents hire me VHS tapes of 80's GF's for me that summer, and I watched them all a few times over.

If not for those two Sharks games, I might not have become a Rugby League fan at all - or even worse, I might have been a Broncos fan.

Great story Burgo.

I might have got it wrong but I thought you actually played for the Sharks in the lower grades.
If not, what level did you reach?

No mate. I’m from Brisbane.

I played in the Q Cup against guys like Petero, the Walkers, Scott Prince, Matt Geyer, Mark Tookey, Bill Dunn, Anthony Priddle and lots of other well known players. Josh Hannay too.

My first try came off a pass from Wes Patten :)

Great idea given the gloom around the club at the moment!

Some of these weren't exactly quality football, but they were memorable for different reasons.

I'll put the 16 GF in it's own category.

5. Vs Eels 2010, 11-0
We were truly terrible from 2009-2011, and after 13 straight losses we beat the eels in the ugliest game ever. Fergie scored two tries, Tim Smith was halfback, pouring rain. Not a quality game by any stretch but the relief of getting a win was unreal.

4. Vs Cowboys 2013 final, 20-18
The 7 tackle game, but our first finals win in 6 years, we were getting tired at the back end but feki scored in the corner and put us in front. Then Jomo tackled linnett into touch on the siren to save the day.... Except the clock broke and they had to play a few more minutes. Crazy game, controversial, but great win.

3. Vs Dragons 2008, 13-12
We were down 12-0 and getting hammered by saints fans before two late tries and a Noddy field goal got us home.

2. Vs Storm 2018, 17-14
Had to win to stay in the top 4 after back to back tight losses. Our defence was amazing in the second half, repelling Melbourne over and over, before ramien streaked away and Dugan scored to put us out of reach.

1. Vs Raiders 2016 final 16-14
I rate this one above the GF. The gutsiest win I've ever seen. We had no right to win it, but we did. It was then that I knew this Sharks team was different, this one would win the comp.

Honourable mentions:
- vs Parra 2000, ETs last home game (but he didn't play, was injured).
- vs Knights 2002 (42-0 halftime against the premiers?!?!)
- vs Manly 2005 (biggest win against our old enemy)
- vs Dragons 2011 (we were crap, they were premiers, got them 16-10)
- vs Storm 2008 (17-16 Noddy field goal)
- vs Storm 2012 (no Gallen, they were undefeated, Jeremy Smith try 12-10)
- vs Broncos 2012 ( we bashed them and Stapleton got a length of the field intercept try)
- vs Roosters 2015 (on 10 losses, Bird had a blinder, won 20-12)
- vs Bulldogs 2001 final, smashed them 52-10, Martin Lang scored.

Ah this was too much fun reminiscing....

That's great mate. Must have been great to play in that type of company.
I know you need to keep your name secret but if you told us, would we know you?

Don’t forget Debbie Spillane, and instead of MoM it was “Beetson’s Best”

Yes I remember her well, didn't mind her actually. Very passionate about the game.

I know she worked for the Dogs for a while but in what capacity I'm not sure.

No. I didn’t play long. I moved away from Brissy for work, played a handful of games of country footy, and copped a career ending injury.

Sorry to hear that mate.

Despite all that, it is obvious to us all (with the possible exception of one poster) that you know your footy. :)

This one is up there for me. I went to Broncos vs Sharks games at Lang Park / Suncorp / QEII for almost 25 years, and this was the first one I went to that the Sharks won (I missed the 2002 and 2003 games).

Another great one was the Cowboys game in 2006. Sharks 24-22
https://www.rugbyleagueproject.org/...d-7/cronulla-vs-north-queensland/summary.html

Cowboys were undefeated. Shark had 1 win from 5. There was a bit of controversy about Dykes and Kimmorley not being able to gel. Kimmorley missed this game, Dykes played 7, and it was probably Dykes' best game in his second stint as a Shark.

Another great game in the 2000's was the 2001 semi where Luke Stuart scored the long range try. Sharks 52-10. Dykes and Campbell put on a clinic.
