Would League work in S.A, T.A.S, W.A, and N.T now or in the future?

Would need a lot of growth and development.. not to mention a lot of money for advertising and getting the brand out there.

We've seen in the past that RL in W.A. (Reds) and S.A. (Rams) hasn''t worked on a permanent basis but i am sure the odd little bit of exposure throughout the season would draw some interest from these areas.

I doubt it very much, its struggling to survive in NSW as it is. Afl is a nation wide game, but thats because it is dominating in its foundation state Victoria, If league cant even be a huge success its foundation state Nsw, I doubt it will compete with afl in afl dominated states.
It wont even have a Thursday night footy show for fans to watch soon.

Agreed Shark123. Would there be enough interest/people to get them to go to games religously or take on multiple sports. Melbournites will go and watch two ants **** if it looked interesting and good on em' so the Storm are safe. I think in order for our game to survive, stop the poaching of our players and strengthen the game we will need to do it. We will need to do it if we want to continue the modus operandi of rugby league in this country to date. It will be at the expense of Sydney clubs because there aren't enough supporters in Sydney of league for all the clubs to be viable/profitable. "Adelaide Sharks" to me doesn't sound stupid. Then again I would still support the sharks if they were in "Beirut". Honestly we would have to bring the game to the people in these states. shopping centres, schools, community halls, local junior league clubs, meet the players etc, 1000's x 1000's of hours investing into the community and then backing it up with quality football. My belief is, is that the community develops clubs/sport, the clubs don't develop the community. Some may say that John Ribot as head of the Superleague in 1997 and prior as C.E.O of the Drongos was a visionary and ahead of his time. Others say that he tore a huge hole in the fabric of rugby league which has taken many years to heal in the aim of profit. Maybe a little of both. The issue comes down to profitability. Why? Simple. Society runs on greed. What would happen if clubs went bankrupt. THey fold right? Wrong. Newtown Jets are still fielding teams, same with the Crushers in Brisbane and the Gold Coast have an N.R.L side now. Bears N.S.W cup etc. I make my point. These clubs are still posting teams year after year just not at the top level. Guess What? You take the money out of league and people still play. Therefore do we need to continue with the way Rugby league is run or would we all be just as happy to watch the local boys or your favorite team play. I know I would be more proud watching a passionate 17 take to the field rather than money hungry athletes performing for their next buck. I believe Peter Jackson was one of the first to call Rugby League his profession. The players used to work and still they played the game they love. Rugby League will never go back to the glory days of the 70's and 80's. Not Until we find the love of the game rather than the $$$ it offers.

Unfortunately, the answer is no. Melbourne is propped up by News Limited to the tune of 5 Million per year.Of course that is their choice, as It looks good to have a Melbourne team to help pay TV subscriptions.Without this funding they would not exist. In my opinion we should be looking to dominate the eastern seaboard with teams on the Central Coast and Coffs Harbour.Capitalising on Rugby League heartland. Also a team should be playing out of Campbelltown for the full season, not 3 games.Another League stronghold being ignored and at the same time, invaded by other codes.Stabilise our bread and butter areas and maybe look interstate after that.

WA Yes
SA Yes

First of all, the NRL shouldnt have to compete, just run as an expansive business.

People like multiple sports, rugby league just needs to be promoted... heavily.

Once the NRL gets its sh!t together, then it can start to compete as a superior alternative to AFL.

It is useless to say that Melbourne/Adelaide/Perth is a waste of time cos they like AFL, because they are real people too and can just as easily embrace NRL if they are made to like it.

Rugby League is a sellable product, you just have to spend money to make money.

adelaide adopted soccer

rugby league just another professional sport, and any sport that has a professional tag on it, it draws attention

Professional sports can run parallel to eachother, it doesnt have to be a competition.

well it was 'hijacked' by the east because thats where it became the most popular. and with popularity comes money, and with money you can afford to have the best players playing in the best teams, and as such have the best competition. until about 15-odd years ago the competition was called the NSWRL, it may have been the premier competition, but the QRL WARL and everything else was still running, but just couldnt grow as large and popular as the NSWRL. from there the NSWRL adopted teams from around the country and nz and became the ARL. After the superleague saga drew to an end, changes needed to be made and the NRL was formed.

There were ARL and Superleague teams from Adelaide and Perth in the 90s, but they died along with their popularity. However, by 2012 they say that the WA Reds will be brought back into the national competition.

Im all for rugby league being a fully nationalized game, but its somewhat not practical

Place teams in Adelaide and Darwin then we would have a nation competition. Pump money into youth development and public interest and you will have a good foundation for the future.

Aggressive expansion is the key to success, not pussy footing 20-year-plan rubbish that control the NRL right now.

Force Channel 9 to screen Rugby League in the primetime in Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne.

Suggesting its a lost cause is the only reason why its not working

WA is ahead of both those, especially Darwin

I think if the NRL wasn't the main administrators of the game then Rugby League could survive in those area's where only small competitions currently exist.
The greed of the NRL will only be a hinderance to any genuine attempts to promote the game against other sports.
Rugby League has & always will be a 'toy' to the NRL just like Souths is to Peter Holmes a Court.

I believe SA & WA would work, as it would be easier markets to get NRL into compared to Vic. The NRL with Maybe News Limited or even the State governments(SA govt is guaranteeing the Sharks to play at Adelaide this season) would need to guarantee backing for 5 - 10 years until the club has generated enough support to stand on its own. Also you cant compare struggling sydney clubs with SA & WA, everyone knows Sydney is over saturated with NRL Clubs, and that are all competing with the same fan base, and Commercial sponsorship. Adelaide only has 4 professional elite clubs(Port AFL Adel AFL, Adel A-League, SA Cricket), and Perth has 5(Force Super 14, Freo AFL, Perth AFL, Perth A-League, WA Cricket) Compare this to Sydney which has 13 elite sporting teams(9 NRL, 1 A-League, 1 AFL, 1 Cricket, 1 Rugby), there is difinently an opportunity to expand the game there, or relocate Sydney clubs, Both the RAMS & Reds were not given the opportunity to develop into a well backed club. Maybe the NRL could give $2m a year for say 5 years for a Sydney club to relocate to Adelaide or Perth.
