Gal talent scout

HE might be out injured for six weeks but Origin skipper Paul Gallen is not just sitting around doing nothing.

Instead he’s taking an active role in the Sharks’ recruitment planning, helping out coach Peter Sharp and CEO Steve Noyce in identifying talent for 2015.

Steve Renouf on Shane Flanagan, Broncos chances 4:56

Former Bronco Steve Renouf shares his thoughts on Shane Flanagan's potential contract extension at the Cronulla Sharks, as well as how the Broncos will fare in Friday night's clash with the Roosters at Suncorp Stadium.

The trio met during the week to draw up a hit list of possible recruits. They have good money available with the departures of Andrew Fifita and Michael Lichaa plus the salary-cap increase.

If only it were that easy.

We will be lucky to land one.

And it'll be playing holmes and brown because they are already here.

Hence the need for a better reserves comp.

There is no segway from 20's to firsts. You either bust in from 20s (dugan, barba, milford) or go play nsw cup. Some of the opposition arent training in nrl clubs with all thE gear and personel.

Needs to be a 16 team 3 tier comp for the nrl.

Some 20 year old props need another year or 2 to develop physically, going from 20s to a comp playing against blokes who will never get close to the nrl wont get them ready either

Completely agree with that, the nrl apparently makes a decent profit so it needs to fund a better reserve grade competition as a lot of clubs are already financially struggling. It'll keep a lot of players in the game that would normally leave the nrl system as I'm sure it'd be difficult to earn a living as a reserve grader. It would only strengthen the comp in the long term.

And aren't the NRL complaining about a lack of talent or some ****?

I saw a title in the daily telecrap but i try to not read their crap.

Better reserve grade comp = better and more talent.

No reason it cant happen.

Its needs too. Reserve graders need to be competing against other prospective first graders. With nrl training experience etc.

This is the point - kids can't cut it at prop until well into their 20s.

This is why the old system was so superior with UNDER 23's as the junior comp.

Unfortunately I don't see the nrl doing anything about it, as long as they've got their record tv deal they think the game is perfect.

It would make more sense to blood brown and holmes into nsw cup against men...its obvious that they a class above others in 20s. Test them out in reserve grade to help with there development

I read somewhere both Holmes and Brown are off contract at end of season?

We should be conservative in our recruiting next year, there simply isn't enough superstar players coming off contract to warrant massive spending. With a bit of luck, I think we have the roster to give the comp a shake next season, then recruit big in 2016(assuming there is talent available)
