I haven't seen the game yet, but I'm about to watch the replay purely for the purposes of seeing how he goes in the #7.
Yeah so he was pretty good.
He's not a natural halfback, but he's a handy footballer. Ironically, him playing in the 7 is very much like baz playing there- they are very similar players. He's got great strength and size, and a lot of belief. He's been better every game he's played which is a great sign.
Perhaps, with an offseason training in the 7, a pretty simple/direct/forward-oriented but well-defined structure plus some help from his dummyhalf and he could be an NRL halfback. I couldn't help imagining Kelly playing outside him instead of Burns... there were some flop-backs and loose balls, second phase play and wide spreads to the right where Burns didn't threaten much but Kelly could have really hurt the opposition with his pace and elusiveness.
I think his short kicking game needs a lot of work either way.
*Edit: I found it interesting that in his interview Graham mentioned he and Gards had played some rep footy together in the past and then they seemed to have a good chat post-match. Can't be a bad thing if there's already some sort of mateship and combination there!
