Agreed also.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately and I reckon it comes down to a few different things.

1 - Right side / Left side
2 - First / Second receiver
3 - Number of receives per game
4 - Kicking amount
5 - Kicking variation
6 - Close to the ruck or further from the ruck
7 - Freedom to move close to the ruck and further away

These are the things that halves (half backs and 5/8's) do. Some do all, some do some.

If Kelly and Graham are our best halves (I reckon they may well be) then we have to look at how all of the above applies to them and then work out a plan.

Personally I think Kelly is a more dynamic runner and Graham a more powerful runner, so I'd have Graham closer to the ruck as a half back and Kelly further out but with freedom to move around.

Graham also seems more vocal and a team organiser, and genuinely looks like he is always really IN the game, this again makes me prefer him in the ruck.

Finally Graham is bigger and probably a better front on defender than Kelly, so he should probably defend more in the ruck as well.

For these reasons I would prefer Graham to wear 7 on his back, though it doesn't actually matter which number either one wear.

I agree with the definitions of 5/8 to half here, but not with graham wearing number 7

Also, I thought he was more suited to lock as he was running at the line mostly not setting plays up or organising, and he was defensively taking the big guys down.

He does a lot of organising actually, or at least a lot of talking and pointing. And being a solid defender doesn't mean you have to play in the forwards, it just means you're a good defender- bonus.

Put it this way- he's better than Hodkinson already.

the best thing about graham is that he is a cocky little fire truck on the field which lends him to being the organiser that we need in the halves

Yeah. He wants the footy in his hands, its a good trait. Wants the responsibility, plus he likes to mix it with the big boys and the 'star' players and have a word or two to say.

I think the fact that Graham wants the ball in his hands and that he loves to direct the traffic is a reason why we can play him at half. Watching a lot of his Toyota Cup games where he has 6 on his back but is pretty much playing halfback, he is always yelling at the boys telling them where to go and what is coming up next.

I just think he needs to be given the reigns fully for a good 3-4 games to see if he is halfback material to be honest.

I don't reckon I've seen him do anything like what I suspect (hope) he might be capable of in first grade yet, but he's improving with each game. Fitness needs work though, he needs to back up better. Those second efforts are critical for your general.

He will be too big to look like a 'conventional' halfback, but he might just do the job.

If there's ever gonna be a night when they all write themselves off its Mad Monday (or Silly Sunday as the case may be).

Let's face it- a young bloke with that much money is gonna get drunk at least every so often. As long as he doesn't let it affect his footy or do anything really dumb like hop behind the wheel or get in a fight etc, I can deal with it.

I haven't seen anything from him that suggests he'll be a good lock, other than the usual fallacy of a bigger 5/8 automatically being suited to play at lock.
In the game against the pennies when he ran straight over the top of snowden i think it was, but try was disallowed, suggest to me lock would not be a problem. but im still thinking halves are the way to go:cheers

it was nathan gardnier not snowden
thanks murphy. i was struggling to work out who it was. They showed a hundred replays of the ball being put down ,but none of the leadup to it, so it was all a bit of a blur.Had nothing to do with the dozen stubbies id thrown down either:cheers
