Hey everyone,

I know this isn't a topic about our Mighty Sharkies, but I am writing this in regards to the UWS Ducks RLFC. We are a Uni Student based rugby league club that participates in the NSW Tertiary RL Competition, we play teams such as UTS, Sydney University and others. It's proper NSWRL competition based around Sydney. I am writing this to see if anyone here will like to help volunteer themselves in running this club, espicially anyone on here who has experience in running or coaching a rugby league club or even other sporting clubs. I am another die-hard Sharks supporter and a UWS student, I need alot of help trying to run this club, so far we have beaten Univerity of Technology Sydney and the Australian National University.

We are a friendly club and this is our first year ever in the competition.

Cheers,

mr.sharkiee

Basically anyone who is interested in game day operations. We train on the normal tuesday and thursday nights. We play on Saturday at 1:15pm.

Also I know you guys like coming to Henson Park, well this Saturday I think around 11am we are playing UTS Tigers there. So you should come watch and I can meet a few of you guys.

Our coach is a former U20s player, Eronny Mareko. He played for the Sharkies.....I should of mentioned that first

Yeah mate that's my home campus to, we do all our operations and crap there. Basically there are only two of us running the joint and others who say they will help but are no shows, or they turn up when they feel its right for them.

If you would like to help and everything please feel free to send me a message on here.

I go to UWS Parramatta. In the 3 and a half years I've been studying there, I have hardly seen anything regarding footy or sports. Then again, I'm more of a watcher than a player, especially when it comes to League.

Good luck with it though. I always thought that UOW were the Ducks. I didn't even know our uni had a mascot

Yeah mate we had a team years ago called the Macarthur Magpies but apparently they just werent up for it. Also I was surprised with the fact that we have a campus in Parra, Bankstown, Campbelltown, Kingswood/Penrith and Westmead and not one single rugby league club. So I decided , lets do this and 1 1/2 its been hell but worth it. Proving alot of doubters wrong. Its pretty cool aswell that a Sharks former u20s is coaching us to....

Good on you for giving it a go. Do you find it difficult co-ordinating people from different areas and campuses?

Also, do you guys have a Facebook page that I could check out?

Cool, I'll check it out. Might pop down to a game one day. I've been past the Bankstown campus a couple of times, the oval you guys have looks good.

Trying to get that field fit for a rugby league match was a big bitch.

Hey Mr Sharkiee. Where is the team based? Back in 1992 I played in the first ever University of Western Sydney team at the Milperra Campus. We played all the other Uni's in 2nd Grade. Made the Semis and were beaten by City Rail ( how the hell they were in the comp still baffles me.) It was a great experience, the blokes were all great guys. I wish you well with it, I'd love to help but I am over committed at work and on the home front with a house full of young kids.

I just read on a bit further, as I originally just looked at the first post and replied. It prompted me to go and find the program I had for the Semi Finals in 1992. The first ever team, in which I played centre, was called Uni of Western Sydney. I only lasted a year as I'd had a serious lung operation and crappy knees. We trained in what was a brand new gymn in the indoor Basketball court and on the oval which back then was mostly set up for AFL, cricket and athletics. Our coach was Roy Robinson who played lower grades for the Roosters.

Back then it was just slapped together. We weren't called the Magpies just UWS, it morphed into that a few years later. We were definitely up for it but just lacked players. I remember playing against one of the other joints with 9 players half way through a game after one of the blokes got hurt, one sin binned and one sent off. ( We only started with 12)We didn't get towelled up as bad as you might think. The team that beat us in the semis was SRA. (State Rail Authority)
