NOW-NOTORIOUS sex shop owner Con Ange last night revealed his one-time links with Parramatta, claiming that former CEO Denis Fitzgerald authorised him to ride on the team bus and mingle in the dressing rooms.

Ange also alleged the pair shared a taxi from Auckland airport in 2007, which he claimed Fitzgerald paid for.

Ange has come under fire in recent months for his involvement with Cronulla, with disputed reports alleging he distributed sex toys to Sharks players. But The Daily Telegraph can reveal Ange's allegiance was initially tied to Parramatta while Fitzgerald ran the Eels between 2004 and 2007.

Although not an official sponsor, Ange shouted the Eels players dinner at his Brisbane pub - St Pauls Tavern - following away matches against the Broncos. Ange part owns the hotel with property developer Vince Lombardo, a long-time friend and associate of Parramatta chairman Roy Spagnolo.

He was also an avid Eels fan. Not only was his eldest son Anthony a ball boy, but Ange also travelled to numerous games - including Parramatta's round one encounter against the Warriors in 2007.

By that stage he and Fitzgerald knew each other. According to Ange, the pair spoke in the Qantas Club at Sydney airport before their Auckland-bound flight and then crossing the Tasman together in business class.

"When we arrived in Auckland, I offered to give Denis a lift in my hire car," Ange recalled. "But for some reason it was cancelled.

"Denis didn't mind, though. He hired a cab and paid for it with a card. I'll never forget the trip because the driver was pulled over and fined with speeding. My son Anthony was in the cab with Denis. They sat together in the back seat."

Once in Auckland, Ange said he and Anthony stayed at the Parramatta team hotel - the Crowne Plaza. They watched Parramatta lose at Mt Smart Stadium, before travelling back to the city with the players and Fitzgerald in the Eels' team bus.

"That was something he'd let me do from time to time," Ange said.

"I'd also visit the dressing room. There was never a problem. If I'm such an undesirable, then why would the CEO himself allow me such access and shout me a cab ride?"

Ange said he stopped supporting the Eels after good friend Tony Zappia moved to Cronulla to become Sharks CEO at the end of 2007. Zappia has since been forced to resign from his new post amid a scandal-plagued season in the Shire.

Fitzgerald's mobile went straight to voicemail last night when contacted for a response.

THE emperor, aka Denis Fitzgerald, has gone. His 30-year reign ended last month.

Into his place will step a father of nine who has enjoyed success in sporting and political arenas former St George and Canberra forward Paul Osborne.

His replacement of long-serving Fitzgerald as Parramatta chief executive officer will be ratified this week.

It is understood that Osborne pipped former Manly CEO Grant Mayer for the job.

Osborne, the boss of the NRL's Accredited Player Agents Scheme, had not even applied for the position but was headhunted by club powerbrokers.

The appointment isn't official but the 42-year-old has been told the job is his.

The club had planned to install Tony Zappia but his tumultuous exit from Cronulla cost him his chance.

Osborne, a former detective, starred in Canberra's 1994 premiership win as prop. He was a member of the ACT Legislative Assembly from 1995 to 2001.

Fitzgerald had held the top job at both the Parramatta leagues and football clubs but the roles have been split.

Andrew Hill, the general manager of football, has been the acting CEO.

LONG after being slaughtered in a campaign to save his best mate Denis Fitzgerald's job at Parramatta, 2GB's Ray Hadley is still one angry man. The broadcaster, who is almost legendary for his volatile sprays, showed he has lost none of his fire in a phone call to porn king Con Ange on Thursday. We understand Hadley took offence at Ange's comments in The Daily Telegraph that he once had dealings with Fitzgerald. We just can't work out how this is any of Hadley's business. For his own sake more than anyone else's, Fitzgerald needs to lose his infatuation with seeing his name in the papers. The fallen Parramatta Emperor's front-page comeback over last Sunday's argument with Eels chairman Roy Spagnolo appears to be doing him more harm than good.

Fitzgerald's detractors were perfectly happy to keep quiet as long as he did, but they are now chirping behind the scenes with all manner of interesting tales about his 30-year reign at Parramatta.

King Con not welcome

No longer having the welcome mat out for him at Toyota Stadium hasn't stopped porn king Con Ange associating with Cronulla players, but he's now forced to do so in stairwells rather than the dressing room. With new Sharks chief executive Richard Fisk instructing security not to let Ange in the dressing room or near the tunnel area, he was spotted with Paul Gallen in a stairwell at the back of the grandstand after yesterday's 56-10 loss to Wests Tigers. ''You're going to have to find somewhere better to hide than that,'' Ange was advised by an unidentified third person Fisk, who took steps to ensure Ange wasn't able to gain access to any official area after he turned up at the Sharks' previous home game against Parramatta, said he hadn't been aware the sex shop owner was there again yesterday. ''We don't want him near the place,'' Fisk said.

DAVID Gallop has paved the way for former Cronulla CEO Tony Zappia to return to the game, declaring his full support after the pair held an impromptu meeting during the week.

Surfacing for the first time since his resignation from the Sharks two months ago, Zappia met the NRL boss on Tuesday in a significant step towards rebuildinghis career.

The secret meeting, instigated by Zappia, will surprise some in league circles after the pair reportedly parted on bitter terms in the wake of Zappia's public hanging.

Zappia went public with his disappointment in Gallop, claiming he felt pressured into falling on his sword after workplace misconduct allegations from former staffer Jenny Hall emerged in June.

But without any of the intense pressure and media spotlight that followed Zappia's every move just eight weeks ago, the pair broke bread for almost an hour.

"He's endeavouring to stay involved and we had a catch-up,'' Gallop revealed. "Tony's got a great passion for the game and hopefully he'll find a position within the game.''

Zappia was also unwilling to go into details about the meeting but suggested it was a major step forward in his bid to return to rugby league.

"It was pleasing that David gave me some of his time and even I'm even more pleased that he would like me to remain involved in the game,'' Zappia said.

"Rugby league is what I'm most passionate about and I'm certainly open to any opportunities that may arise.''

Prior to be being poached by the Sharks, Zappia had been the football manager of the Parramatta Eels. And despite the turmoil surrounding his time at Cronulla, Zappia remained a leading candidate to take on the Parramatta CEO position before Paul Osborne was appointed.

Zappia has just returned from a six-week European vacation with his family.

Included in Zappia's trip was a pit stop in the UK, where he met with several English Super League clubs.

But it's believed Zappia's preference is to stay involved with the NRL.

Slide Rule he will have a Job within 12 months probably at Parra.

They would have to be stupid to employ him. Too much Baggage.

I recently read (I think it was in the telegraph) that he was refused entry into the Parramatta dressing room after a recent home match.

It sounds like even Parramatta dont want to be associated with him anymore.

Ex-Shark linked to Roosters

FALLEN ex-Sharks CEO Tony Zappia has been thrown a lifeline by the Roosters, whose new coach Brian Smith wants the controversial administrator on board as football manager.

Zappia said Smith had asked if he was interested in resurrecting his career at Bondi in 2010. The development came as Roosters' recruitment boss Peter O'Sullivan confirmed the club was willing to chase another surprise recruit - former Dragons' prop Jason Ryles.

Smith's immediate move to pursue Zappia comes as a shock, given it has been less than three months since the administrator stood down from the helm at Cronulla amid controversy. His demise began after accidentally punching former community relations officer Jenny Hall during a shadow-boxing bout last August.

The incident led to Hall quitting in December, but the real drama began when she released secretly recorded conversations in which Zappia offered to let her spank him.

Zappia has kept a low profile since falling on his sword in June, spending a month in Europe sounding out job opportunities with UK Super League clubs. It's understood he attracted interest from Celtic Crusaders, but would prefer not to move his family from Sydney's southwest.

Smith, who sensationally left Newcastle last month after secretly signing a four-year deal to coach the Roosters, sent Zappia a text message last month about the Tricolours football manager position. Smith has been in Mexico visiting his son, but arrived home last week and began working at the Roosters on Tuesday. He did not return calls and text messages last night.

"Brian made an inquiry, but it hasn't gone any further than that,'' Zappia told The Daily Telegraph. "I'm interested in any opportunities in rugby league, but there's been no further indication as to whether there's a position available.''

The pair worked together at Parramatta for almost a decade, filling the identical positions of coach and football manager, and they remain close friends.

"I haven't heard from Brian since he went overseas,'' Zappia said. "From what I understand the Roosters are restructuring their football department but I don't know any more than that.''

Despite Smith's approach, Roosters CEO Steve Noyce last night said there were no plans to include a football manager in the restructure. "At this stage we are looking at putting more resources into high performance,'' Noyce said.

Noyce said he had been in touch with Zappia, but not to discuss a job at the Roosters. "Zap is a good mate of mine - we went to school together,'' he said.

Smith has already signalled his intention to make wholesale changes, dispensing with long-serving trainer Ronnie Palmer. Zappia's hire would cause controversy but a Sharks' inquiry cleared him of wrongdoing.

NRL boss David Gallop has also given Zappia his blessing to return, after initially suggestion he would "find it very difficult'' to work in rugby league again. At a meeting last month, Gallop offered Zappia a position in PNG.

"That's something I'm thinking about as well, but I still don't have all the details,'' Zappia said. "As I mentioned, I'm open to any opportunities in rugby league.''

The Roosters yesterday signed Raiders' speedster Phil Graham for two seasons, and O'Sullivan confirmed Ryles, currently playing with French Super League outfit Les Catalans, was a possibility.

So was Zappia a scapegoat to try and end the scandal?

I can only assume that Gallop offering Zappia a job is a way to remedy the damage that was done to Zappia in the whole affair.... I really don't get it - I came to believe Zappia was a moronic schmuck. Perhaps there was more to it...?

In my less than humble opinion, Four Corners, Magnay & Co did our Club a great service by outing the previous Board and Zappia...

Without that happening we would still be steered by those nongs and buffoons.

The challenge now is to ensure we don't make the same mistakes again.

Soemtimes in life, bad things are the germination of good things.

We are the phoenix rising from the fire.

Soon we will be soaring!

That's how I see it too.
Magnay coped a lot from us passionate fans in the heat of the moment.

Life is based on that premise. It is a series of trial and error which we learn from so get out there and be wrong as much as you can.
We are the phoenix rising from the fire.

Soon we will be soaring!
That's what I like to see "optimism"

Brian Smith wants Tony Zappia at the Roosters

Former Cronulla Sharks CEO Tony Zappia may be on his way to the Sydney Roosters, with incoming coach Brian Smith calling for Zappia to join the club as football manager.

Zappia resigned as Sharks boss this year following a scandal involving a former employee, who he accidentally punched in the face – causing a black eye – before she secretly taped him offering to let her spank him as punishment.

A Cronulla investigation cleared Zappia of any wrongdoing in the scandals to rock the club, including revelations a terminally-ill fan sent thousands of dollars in donations to the club directly to the chief executive’s home address.

He has been approached by Smith about taking on a role at the Roosters, but no official offer has been made at this stage.

“Brian made an inquiry, but it hasn’t gone any further than that,’’ Zappia told News Ltd.

“I’m interested in any opportunities in rugby league, but there’s been no further indication as to whether there’s a position available.’’

NRL boss David Gallop has also offered Zappia a role in promoting the game in Papua New Gunea.

“That’s something I’m thinking about as well, but I still don’t have all the details,’’ Zappia said.

“As I mentioned, I’m open to any opportunities in rugby league.’’

Gallop had early suggested it would be “very difficult” for Zappia to continue to have a role in the NRL.

Sharks bitten by financial dealings

The Beyond Sharks Foundation - a secret trust set up by the disgraced former Cronulla Sharks boss, Tony Zappia, with money donated by an alleged fraudster, Clint Elford - was not used in any way to benefit the club, an independent report has found.

The report by auditors BDO Kendalls destroys any hope Mr Zappia may have held of finding another job in rugby league and confirms a series of Herald investigations into the murky inner workings of the club.

Mr Zappia said he had spent $10,000 of the $30,000 donated to the foundation on a computer and a team training camp. The Herald revealed that invoices produced by Mr Zappia to verify his story were wrongly dated.

The report was commissioned by the club after a series of articles exposing Mr Zappia's dubious management practices. One detailed how the then chief executive had accidentally punched a female employee, Jenny Hall, seriously bruising her face, then asked her to spank him.

The revelations rocked the NRL and the Cronulla Sharks to the extent that the club's chief sponsor, LG Electronics, and others withdrew support, putting extreme pressure on the club.

The Herald wrote how a company owned by Mr Zappia's wife, Raelene, and other family members called Gearonline had been used to buy football equipment without tenders being called.

Another report investigated a public fund-raising day for Guide Dogs NSW. Only after the Herald posed written questions and sought information under the Charity Act did the club give the money to the charity, some 11 months late.

The report damned the club's old practices and highlighted several areas of weakness.

In a statement, the club said these included the management of capital expenditure, the entering of contractual agreements and other financial transactions.

The NRL chief executive, David Gallop, said the Cronulla club had fairly troubling concerns but the new board appears determined to turn over a new leaf.

''Clearly there are some issues in relation to [Mr Zappia's] administration while he was chief executive and he would probably need to address those with any new employer in the game,'' Mr Gallop said.

Mr Zappia has been spruiking a possible return to rugby league, but the clubs mentioned have rejected such an approach.

Yesterday the Cronulla board - which has undergone significant change, including the appointment of two female directors - said it had already implemented the report's recommendations.

Significantly, the report said: ''That clear policies regarding conflict of interest, risk management, unethical and dishonest behaviour, procurement and remuneration be established in order to bring the club into line with acceptable modern best practice standards.''

The chairman, Damian Irvine, said the report was part of the club's commitment to rebuilding its reputation. "We accept that things could have been done better in the past, but as a club we are totally committed to establishing the structures and policies that will best equip us to avoid any repeat of the events of 2008-09,'' he said.

''Without the right protocol and planning, unsavoury incidents not only are more likely to occur but also have the ability to manifest into greater problems, and I think that has happened at the club in recent years.''

The good news for the Sharks was that the report found no evidence of any transactions that breached salary cap rules. The NRL had asked the club to investigate any possible infringements.
