Ok, I accept that, but what about allowing a club to sign someone excessively “under market value”.
Wighton’s value is determined by what teams are willing to offer and based on experience and rep status surely.
so offers of $1m and $1.1m mean that a contract for $700-750k is “unders” (and should be unacceptable), as is $900-950k (but acceptable) given much closer.

I get that players can choose to accept “unders” for a specific reason, but $400-450k (season 1-2) is taking the piss isn’t it and isn’t in the spirit of what the NRL is trying to do in making the comp competitive!

His market value doesn't go off what his contract offers are though, it goes off what he's currently being paid which this year is 900k.

The final year of his south's contract he will earn more than he is currently, NRL is going to have no issue approving this

If you put Ramien or Talakai in that backline off Latrell and Walker they would be test players
I get where you're coming from. Maybe if they were in the Panthers side with those combinations.

On the flipside, Campbell probably doesn't look half the player he is now at the Tigers.

I think its very refreshing that a footballer isn’t motivated solely by who will pay him the most, I feel it actually shows great character, which is something I never thought I’d say about Jack. Its not like what he’s going to get at Souths wont set him up for life along with all his earnings so far. All the credit in the world to him.

As for the whole spirit of the nrl thing, I dont see why Souths should be punished for having their **** together as a club and for being in a position to be such an appealing destination for an elite player that he’s willing to be paid much less to play there. Thats something we should be striving for.

I honestly think most of the uproar is born out of pure jealousy.

My understanding is “It's understood NRL auditor Richard Gardham has final discretion to determine market value using a list of comparative players to reach his decision.”

So if he’s being compared to games best centres he is probably not under value in nrls eyes

It’s literally all born from Paul Kent because he’s very close mates with Ricky Stuart

The funny thing about Kent’s rant was everyone was against him, but then later on they’re talkin about the crazy money John Schuster’s is on and someone chimes in “that’s more than what Wighton is getting.”

Hey, it's the rumour mill thread. Not the NRL salary cap auditors' office!
But it's not a rumour. Unless you are making it one.

For the size of the thread including various prior versions I've noticed there are fekk all rumours posted.

Splitting hair, aren't we? 😁 It's also Player movement by the way.

That being said, I agree with you.
