Warren Ryan: Finally something to cheer about: State of Origin finale delivers much-needed battle

BEFORE Origin 2010 is fully consigned to history, just a few thoughts from this column.
Although beaten 3-0, NSW finally produced a game worthy of Origin.
That requirement had reached the critical stage.
Had it been a decider, it would rightfully take its place alongside the great Origin battles. The fact that Queensland had already wrapped up the series denies it that privilege to some degree, yet the determination of Queensland to win from a seemingly impossible position to achieve a clean sweep affords it its own special place.
The vision of a wall of maroon jerseys grimly defending their goal line as the second-half possession flowed relentlessly against them will live long in the memory. The statistics tell the story of a win against mountainous odds.
When NSW lock Greg Bird went over for the try that put NSW in front, it was NSW's 17th completed set.
At that stage, Queensland had only completed seven.
Both sides had made two errors, which means possessions stood at NSW 19, Queensland 9.
With the fuel gauge reading empty, a fightback bordered on the impossible. Why the imbalance? Well, NSW at that stage had three penalties to nil and subsequently trapped Queensland for two line drop-outs. At various stages, there were three calls of "six to go" and there was the return kick-off from Kurt Gidley's try.
A total of nine additional possessions.
When Michael Ennis blew a fuse at Nate Myles, Queensland got their one and only penalty for the half, which was all Darren Lockyer needed to give Billy Slater a fighting chance to find the try line. Queensland took back the lead 19-18. It was Queensland's eighth completion. Big Mal's troops had won on a starvation diet of ball. A truly remarkable performance.
To say the Willie Tonga try in the dying moments was the icing on the cake is a bit wide of the mark. There was no cake. To find the will and the way to win after such prolonged and exhausting goal-line defence was the stuff of Origin folklore.
