So...What's Your Excuse?

This thread is the result of an observation that I made quite some time ago but which has been resurrected recently as a result of the "St Merge love-in" that has been happening around the Shire since the Grand Final.

As many of you have noticed and subsequently commented on, since St Merge finally were able to stop choking long enough to fluke a premiership, there has been an epidemic of "Red V inflammation", which sounds like a sexually transmitted disease but is actually far more irritating! All the closet Dragons fans, who were not game to show their true colours unless the dreaded choking returned, have now come out in force.

And of course, they are only to happy to share their enthusiasm for the Dragons and, simultaneously, mock any one who happens to be a Sharks fan. I've now gotten well and truly sick and tired of debating with lifelong Shire residents who follow the Dragons, the Bunnies, the Tigers etc...but I have found a simple yet effective solution.

And this is it: "So...What's your excuse?" That's it. One simple question that will immediately have them backpedalling and coming up with all sorts of ludicrous sounding excuses to justify themselves.

Here's a few examples: I was talking to a bloke I met at a social occasion on the weekend. Turns out he grew up in Caringbah, went to Caringbah High, etc, etc. He commented on my Sharks cap and I said "Yeah, I've been a fan all my life. What about you?"

"Oh no!", he said. "I'm a Dragons fan!"
"So...what's your excuse?"
"What do you mean?", he says, looking confused.
"Well, you've lived in the Shire all your life, you said. Went to school here, met your wife here, even work here. So what's your excuse?", I asked him simply.
"Oh, well, ummm...you see my Dad was a Dragons fan and ummm, yeah."

Here's another one: A bloke I work with, once again born and bred in the Shire, still lives here, wife is from here - the usual. He supports Souths.
"So...what's your excuse?"
"Oh, when I was born, the Sharks weren't around yet!"
"So, what year were you born?"
"1965"
"Oh, so you picked a team when you were two?"
"Ummm, yeah..."

You see, all these people will come up with some lame attempt to justify their actions and it is in their explanation that it is plainly obvious just how flimsy most of them are.

The best one was when someone tried to turn it around on me. She said, "So why do you support the Sharks then?"
"Because I have lived here all my life. It's my home.", was my simple reply.
"Well, so do I!", she huffed indignantly.

"So,...What's your excuse?" , was all I had to say. There was no reply...;)

I sort of have to do the opposite most of the time Iron. People are asking me what my reasoning is for going for the Sharks when I was born in far north NSW etc and didn't go to Cronulla until I was like 23.

The answer is that my family is from down there, my grand parents took my mum to their first ever game etc.

If my family can still go for the Sharks after all those years all of the excuses you heard mean NOTHING. It's been 28 years since my family lived in the shire and they all still go for the Sharks.

Well, at least your family lived in the area! In your defence, you didn't have a local team to support on the North Coast, so it makes sense to go for the team that your family supported.

You now say that the Gold Coast is your second side anyway, which makes sense as well.

A lot of St Merge supporters in the Shire despise the Sharks. Some of them call the Sharks their second side, which doesn't really bother me.

Actually to be honest I played for Seagulls juniors and we used to go and watch the Seagulls NRL side when they were around and get in for $2 on our juniors card etc.

But I used to think the Seagulls were rubbish and would often go for the away teams.

I feel bad now but that's what kids are like so I can kind of understand if kids do the same regarding the Sharks. The ones that are too young to have seen the sides features ET, Peachey, Preston Campbell, Mat Rogers etc. If you'd just started following the Sharks since the mid-Anderson era I could forgive kids for thinking the team sucks.

But yeah I like the Titans. As I got older I saw the need for a team on the coast and I like seeing a lot of coast juniors playing for them, as well as some of my favourite ex-Sharks!

i like where your coming from here iron as i see the sharks passion in you ... however as an interstate sharks supporter - who has lived in QLD (Sunshine coast & Brisbane) for most of my life (except a few years overseas) i would be very quick to slam anyone who asked me the same question about my support and the broncos....

despite being a Maroon i have supported the sharks ever since i can remember - and despite watching the broncos win more comps than i care to remember i find the idea of conforming to support a particular team simply due to where i have lived / live a little bit absurd... i dont live in the shire so i cant speak about the current dragons epidemic down there but based on your logic i should not support the sharks but should spend my cash on a bronco's membership / jerseys / and other supporter stuff i purchase each year...

i believe i am not off track here on your thread but please remember there are sharks fans who love the sharks but have no local connection with the club / shire.

Along the same lines as Marky. I am from Brisbane, lived here my whole life, I have no ties with the shire. Yet, I am a Sharks supporter.

*Pulls up the therapist couch*

I guess it comes back to my family all being English and having no real like for Rugby League, it's all soccer. So I had the freedom to pick my own team. I didn't like the Broncs (Can you really blame me?). Sharks were the team I liked to watch, I wanted to watch and really actually got me in to league. Do I regret this decision. Absolutely-bloody-not! Frustrating as hell, sure. Disappointing and heartbreaking, sure. However, I love em.

I personally probally should be a dragons or knights supporter.

Was born in Newcastle and lived near Dragons terriority just a bit further south for my whole childhood. Now Canberra is my local team and thats still 3 or so hours away.

I have supporte sharks my entire life it started because of the shark logo and David Peachey are my earliest memories. I will forever be a Sharks support but doubt i will ever live in the shire.

Sharks are my team just cause they are. That is a pretty lame excuss 2

The main thing I can take from this thread is how much a shame it is that the Sharks 'franchise brand' has been so tarnished over the last 10 years or so.

We used to sort of be like the Wests Tigers are now. An exciting team that no one really hated (IMO). What we are now is much different. I would love for the Sharks to appeal to more casual Rugby League fans rather than trying to talk only about the shire and only having 'real' fans etc.

I think our mascot, logo, colours etc are all really good and that can go some way to attracting fans that haven't chosen a team already. The rest is being fun to watch and having a level of performance that isn't embarrassing. You don't need to win the premiership every year, just need to be competitive.

I believe the popularity of teams deffinately rotates and runs on a cycle. What goes around comes around. If we had of won in the late 90's, early 200's, when we were exciting, popular etc, how different would the club be now? I'd make the assumption we wouldnt have changed our logo, and our financial troubles MAY have been avoided.

i am one of those who has absolutley no ties to the shire or its surrounds. never actually set foot in the shire to be honest with ya. But am sharks through and through and always have been.

Stems back to when i was four and my old man took me and my older bro to buy Essendon jerseys as he was a bombers fan. My old girl cut up rough as she is a filthy pies supporter and said we should be allowed to choose whatever jersey we wanted. My bro picked the bombers, i picked a sharks jersey.

I'm the opposite. Born and bred in St George area, parents and Alot of my friends go for the goons. Why did I pick the sharkies? Couple of reasons...cool mascot and colours which is important for a kid, loved watching pres cup team with the golden generation romp home in the GF, remember seeing an awesome backline move from a scrum in a semi against Canberra, loved the general laid back nature of the club and preferred supporting the underdog over the arrogant goons and their overbearing fans...
