Flanno made the joke about billeting Carney at Gal's place last night.

In all seriousness though, living in a house with noisy little people who get up at sparrow's and instantly demand massive amounts of attention does put a damper on the late night party-boy ways.

I'm not suggesting Todd goes out and gets himself an instant wife and family, however having a direct responsibility to someone else who relies on you does change your priorities hugely.

There's no doubting Todd is a great footballer. He just needs to be a lot less ego-centric off the field. If he can manage to do that, I believe it will have added dividends in his leadership qualities on the field.

i hear that!

Is it awkward if I ask what Billeting means?

It's sort of like an exchange student except the term is most often used when referring to travelling sports people. For example people in athletics in school in northern NSW often have to go to Sydney if they're any good, to compete at a state level. When this happens they usually sleep at a nice families house that is part of some billeting programme or whatever.

When I was playing and you went away on overnight junior rep bus trips or to New Zealand, you got billeted out to the families of the host team. Quite often you'd be on an inflatable air-bed on the floor of the guy that you were playing the next day.

Vice versa, you'd have opposition players staying at your place too. It's where you really started your home ground advantage. It never happened to me but I've heard of opposition players been slipped a sleeping pill or fed a dodgy meal. One of my mates had to sleep in a room with an overly familiar German Shepherd.

I know this is still off topic but thought I would throw in my own billets story.

Back in my junior hockey days had a South African touring team stay with us. These guys were from Johanasburg which for those that are not aware is quite a dangerous city. They would tell how they couldn't believe our house was so open with a front lawn and everything. In their city they had concrete walls and barb wire enclosing their dwellings.

So here they come to go ol relatively safe Australia out at my place in the burbs. And of all things what happens to them while coming off a train back to our place one day? They get held up by some muggers with screw drivers and lose some cash! The irony!

It didn't seem to shake them up too much though as they still totally wipped my club when we played them.

After reading Fitz story we were actually very hospitipal to them. Can't believe we didn't think of spiking their drinks and the like!:D Ah to be young and niave.

Aaaah the old Billeting routine when playing in rep teams! Wow that brings back memories, some families even popped presents in bags (i.e bottles of wine) for the other kids parents!

Very please to hear Flanno admit last night we are interested in Carney, we need this bloke.

But it seems Manly has discovered the answer for us. Hopefully when Carney signs we buy him a dog.
A dog is being credited with turning Anthony Watmough's life around. He now goes to bed at 930 so he can be up at 6 to walk to dog. No time to go out on the drink anymore.

So there's the answer sign Carney and buy him a labrador.

mate I know your comment was tongue in cheek but I'm sure I remember reading last yr that Carney & his house mate (think it might have been Phil Graham) bought a staffy, could be wrong!

Making carney live at gals basically

I'm sure Gals missus would be stoked w/ that!

He probably was relieved to be finally able to have a dog after those few years at Canberra when it probably wasn't a good idea...

My opinion has changed a bit- I'll back whatever the Club does.

Irvine has shown good judgement so far and will be prepared for the obvious risks. The Board has some good footy/sports admin nous on there now with the likes of Docking and Kerr. And Flano and Mooney have forgotten more about player development than I'll ever know, so if they think we need him then I'm fine with that.

I do think if it happens then we need to control the media response. It shouldn't be lauded as a 'master signing' or some sort of coup. Nor should it be represented as any kind of desperate move by Carney. It should be about us offering an opportunity to a young man- nothing more, nothing less. In fact, that's how we should market ourselves to everyone (re: player signings)- come to Cronulla, they're fair, open and will give you a crack if you earn it on and off the field. No matter what your age or past.

Good post.

I too am opposed to his signing (mainly on the grounds that he is a ****ing wanker). But if they sign him, I've got no choice but to support that because really, pissing and moaning about isn't going to make him any less of a cock head.

If he ends up here hopefully he gives as much of a **** about the team as we all do otherwise he'll just be yet another statistic: a bloke who came here for the money, not the team, and in the end just pisses off to a bigger paycheck.

And I hope as a result we don't lose AK

This. If Kelly were off contract next year then I would be against Carney 100% because it would be a classic Sharks story... go for the quick fix and in the process lose the long term answer. The way I see it, most likely outcome would be that Carney screws up and we go with Chad/Kelly anyway. If he doesn't he will be a gun. Win/win- as long as we don't lose either of the younger blokes.

And its obvious what Carney needs- time and a strong-willed missus.

thing is Townsend is still inexperienced, a year in NSW Cup would be suitable. The kid is still young and needs time.

I think signing Carney would be appropriate in the sense that we will have a half that HAS experience and has a great kicking game and isn't at his "retiring" stage of his career.

And honestly I've met the guy and he isnt a ********. Saw him at a Jets game at Henson and he was more than happy to talk. Never showed any signs of being a ********.

Stop bringing Townsend into this. He is a 7, Carney is a 6. It's Albert who'd lose his shot, but maybe he could do with some time in NSW cup, but maybe he's already hot to trot.
