Sharks develop plan for survival
By David Riccio

WIN or lose this afternoon, Cronulla fans have plenty to cheer about following the approval of long-held plans for a $60 million commercial development that will save the club from merging or dying.

Fearing the worst for their future during the week, Sharks officials pleaded with supporters to vote with their feet by turning up in numbers to this afternoon's clash with Parramatta.

But the threats of migrating to the Central Coast have been allayed with Cronulla chairman Barry Pierce confirming this week a new commercial arm, Woolooware Bay Properties Limited, would ensure the club's future at Toyota Stadium.

"This is a financial lifeline to ensure we remain a stand-alone club,'' Pierce said.

"It's a bold strategy for the future of the club that has come about due to the Government's current poker machine taxes.

"For Sharks supporters it's the step in the right direction as far as staying put in the Shire is concerned.''

Under the plans being examined by the Sharks is the proposed development of a hotel-motel and retail and conference centre to commercialise the 2.8-hectare block of land they own adjacent to the leagues club.

The completed project has value projections of between $80m and $100m.

It is anticipated that in order to finance the development the company will be listed on the stock exchange early next year.

The new company will be a wholly-owned subsidiary of the club, with the Sharks eventually owning between 35 and 56 per cent, after the club lists the company on the stock exchange.

Pierce took umbrage to reports suggesting the Sharks' plan was similar to a concept involving the Bulldogs, which ended with them being caught cheating the salary cap.

"It's ridiculous to even mention any likeness to the Oasis project,'' Pierce said.

I would hope that all members are issued with a prospectus as I would have no problems investing in the club and would like to be given the chance.

just the green bay packers..who are one of the smaller cities to have an NFL team and its worked successfully and also the brisbane broncos who also floated there club to help raise funds

2cmqeex.gif

and here is the story

difference is they play in front of full stadiums and the nfl is a true national sport. NRL is not a national sport, sharks dont play in front of sold out crowds, the level of interest in the sport and the club is in rapid decline. Brisbane are the only club in the city.
Terrible comparison, wake up :birdno

Fact, or merely your opinion? Of course you are entitled to your opinion, but if you would have us believe this to be a fact, then how about some supporting evidence?

you are a tool and to up yourself to get what i was talking about..who gives a sh!t, you said that no one else has sold shares to keep there club alive and i happily proved you wrong..also the broncos do it..

the footy show has always done that, pull your head out of your arse and look at the footy show..they have always brought on people who are not apart of league, its not a proper footy show its just a show for fun, a light hearted show..if you want league shows put on foxsports or ch 9 on sunday...

also AFL crowds and ratings are down..NRL smash the AFL ratings every year..

hate to break it to you but the NRL are always able to get corporate dollars

you sir no nothing about this game..

The game put me to sleep on sunday and i don't support gayfl as you refer to it. The people of the shire shouldn't feel obliged to support the rubbish that was on display. Its time they were given a team in the a league. The world game is played by over 20,000 residents of the shire alone compared to the local rugby league clubs that strugle to field one team per grade. I used to support league but now find it and the sharks repulsive. The sport requires no skill just requires size and in-effect we are paying guys that would have otherwise been working the door of northies

Well go back to sleep and stop posting stuff about a club and game that you find replusive, if it is that bad and you hate it that much why would you come on here at all.
I tend to think that you are no great loss as a supporter of league and the sharks, infact we are probably a lot better off without you and hope I dont read any more of your rubbish on these forums SLEEP TIGHT!!!!!!!!

I agree with you on one point, I hope they do give the Shire an A League side, it would be good for the area.
However, I wouldn't get too excited about the "world" game and it's A League just yet. It's got plenty of novelty value at the moment being the newest show in town plus it's riding on the coat tails of the Socceroos World Cup success but it doesn't even rate enough interest to get TV coverage at the moment. Soccer has tried and failed for years to break through in Australia. Lets wait a few years and see if it can survive.

As for your point on soccer being a more skillful game, that's just a load of rubbish. For one thing, there are no hand skills at all in soccer (barring keepers) so thats half your limbs you're not using for starters.
I played soccer for over 18 years as well as League AND AFL at club level.
Soccer requires speed, agility and foot skills. There is little use for size and strength or hand/eye co-ordination. It has only light body contact.
AFL requires agility, hand and foot skills, hand/eye co-ordination and size, speed and strength can be used as an advantage. Moderate to heavy body contact.
League requires agility, hand and foot skills, hand/eye co-ordination. Size and strength are a definite advantage, but are not mandatory (see Bowen etc). Body contact is heavy and constant, requiring extreme toughness.

Overall, I would rate League players as the most highly developed professional sportsmen in the field of overall fitness. As a rule they are fast, strong, agile and fit.
Anyone can sign up and play park soccer with minimal to no fitness and have no real problem. Why don't you try and get a run for your local League team without training for it...you won't last 5 minutes.

To say that League puts you to sleep is one thing but to suggest A League soccer is more exciting is a joke. I went out to ANZ to watch the Socceroos vs China. It was one of the most boring things I have ever seen and that is at World Cup Qualifier level. There were perhaps a dozen genuine shots on goal, if that.

Finally yes, soccer has a high participation rate compared to League in the junior ranks. Alot of this has to do with the fact that parents feel it is safer. My two sons started in soccer and both became bored with it after less than three years. One now plays League, the other AFL and enjoy them much more.

Eddie Su'a? Apologies to big Eddie, but he does have some experience in that line of work, and a physique to match! Noddy on the other hand, would struggle to get a gig on the door of Northies I would suggest! :nodlaugh
