The world game is played by over 20,000 residents of the shire alone compared to the local rugby league clubs that strugle to field one team per grade. I used to support league but now find it and the sharks repulsive. The sport requires no skill just requires size and in-effect we are paying guys that would have otherwise been working the door of northies
I agree with you on one point, I hope they do give the Shire an A League side, it would be good for the area.
However, I wouldn't get too excited about the "world" game and it's A League just yet. It's got plenty of novelty value at the moment being the newest show in town plus it's riding on the coat tails of the Socceroos World Cup success but it doesn't even rate enough interest to get TV coverage at the moment. Soccer has tried and failed for years to break through in Australia. Lets wait a few years and see if it can survive.
As for your point on soccer being a more skillful game, that's just a load of rubbish. For one thing, there are no hand skills at all in soccer (barring keepers) so thats half your limbs you're not using for starters.
I played soccer for over 18 years as well as League AND AFL at club level.
Soccer requires speed, agility and foot skills. There is little use for size and strength or hand/eye co-ordination. It has only light body contact.
AFL requires agility, hand and foot skills, hand/eye co-ordination and size, speed and strength can be used as an advantage. Moderate to heavy body contact.
League requires agility, hand and foot skills, hand/eye co-ordination. Size and strength are a definite advantage, but are not mandatory (see Bowen etc). Body contact is heavy and constant, requiring extreme toughness.
Overall, I would rate League players as the most highly developed professional sportsmen in the field of overall fitness. As a rule they are fast, strong, agile and fit.
Anyone can sign up and play park soccer with minimal to no fitness and have no real problem. Why don't you try and get a run for your local League team without training for it...you won't last 5 minutes.
To say that League puts you to sleep is one thing but to suggest A League soccer is more exciting is a joke. I went out to ANZ to watch the Socceroos vs China. It was one of the most boring things I have ever seen and that is at World Cup Qualifier level. There were perhaps a dozen genuine shots on goal, if that.
Finally yes, soccer has a high participation rate compared to League in the junior ranks. Alot of this has to do with the fact that parents feel it is safer. My two sons started in soccer and both became bored with it after less than three years. One now plays League, the other AFL and enjoy them much more.
