dreamteam is open to create a league, but we cant create a team yet so ill wait 'till we can to make one if yaz want.

a good thing about it is theres no limit of the amount of players you can have from the one team eg: my whole team can be all sharks

i like that, i hate the limit rule

Not much of a fan of these things, but I'm pissed and bored, so I'm gonna have a crack.

Sharks are Second Lowest Rated Team on FoxSports Fantasy League

Greetings all,

Thought I could introduce myself to the forums with a thread based on one of my favourite things- statistics.

I saw the FoxSports Fantasy NRL advertised on TV, and decided to look at it (I love fantasy teams). I spent most of yesterday analysing the statistics on their website (http://nrlfantasy.foxsports.com.au/M/stats.mc ), and have some interesting (well I think so) findings.

First of all, each player is given a “rating” in points. I have no idea how they calculate this rating (probably a mix of player stats, past popularity in fantasy teams, and guesstimate), but you’ll be happy to hear, if you add up the total ratings of each player in each team, the Sharks squad comes in second lowest, just in front of Canberra :birdno

Here is the breakdown-

Team Total Points
Penrith 157.5
Storm 153
Roosters 152
Knights 151
Dragons 150.5
Titans 149.5 (actually 155.5, but for 26 players- every other team has 25 players- the average for 25 players is 149.5)
Tigers 149.5
Bulldogs 149
Manly 148.5
Eels 147.5
Broncos 145
Cowboys 143.5
Rabbitohs140
Warriors 137
Sharks 134.5
Raiders 133.5

Also interestingly (IMHO), is a look at the team points earned towards the fantasy competition based on last years stats. Here it must be noted the points for coaches (a mak of 4/game) and for time spent on the field (1 point for 60 minutes or less, 2 points for 60+) have been left out (they won’t affect the totals by much at all). Also, the points are based on the fantasy leagues scoring system (check it out here http://nrlfantasy.foxsports.com.au/M/help.mc?category=scoring )- with tries and try assists given high weighting, but runs and tackles earning the most total points (hence backrowers and hookers are often the highest points scorers). The total points earned for each team based on last years stats are-

Team Total Points
Storm 6420
Warriors 6386
Manly 6219
Titans 5794
Eels 5793
Sharks 5461
Tigers 5289
Penrith 5220
Raiders 5206
Cowboys 5124
Rabbitohs 4993
Bulldogs 4720
Broncos 5654
Roosters 4591
Dragons 4304
Knights 4149

Based on this, the warriors players are a real bargain- they earn more points than their ratings would indicate, and the Sharks are one of the next most under rated teams comparing their statistics to their ratings. No surprises there!

One problem with these statistics is they don’t fully account for “quality”, but are very much based on “quantity”. Particularly, making more runs gives you more points, regardless of how far you have run. They are really a measure of how “busy” a player is.

Props
Looking at individual Sharks players (again not counting the 1-2 points per game for playing), the most under rated player, based on “rating” compared to points they earned last year, is Adam Peek. Mostly because of his cheap cost of only 3 points compared to the 273 points he earned last year. He is nearly a must have player for any fantasy team based on this, as long as he is likely to get something like the 742 minutes of game time he had last year. Peek is also the 18th busiest prop out of 97), based on points earned per minute. Ross is 11th, and Douglas is 56th! However, Douglas makes more runs and tackles than many props- his lower points is because of no tries scored, no try assists, 1 line break, no linebreak assists, and 9 offloads (Dave Taylor and Steve Price are 1st and 2nd in points earned per minute on the field).

Backrow
Gallen and Bird are both 8 cost players, but produced a lot of points, so you get 62 and 61 points (respectively) per point of cost. This represents the 10th and 12th best rate of points earned to cost of any back rowers in the game (Michael Luck and Anthony Laffranchi are easily the best value on this basis, with similar work rates to Bird and Gallen but only costing 6 points each). Gallen and Peek (along with Ross) are also the busiest players in the Sharks, earning about 15 points per half of football that they play. Gallen is the 9th busiest backrower (out of 97), in terms of points earned per minute playing, and Bird is 23rd (Junior Pualo is 1st, because of his low minutes played last season, but Laffranchi is 2nd and Sonny Bill-Williams is 3rd). Again, if metres made per run were included, I’m sure Bird and Gallen would look even better.

Hooker
At hooker, De Gois and Kingston both score plenty of fantasy points per minute on the field. They rank 5th and 7th (of 34), with Kearney in between at 6th! (Kearney counts as a hooker in the Fantasy League- his limited game time last year mean his stats are not terribly revealing- same for Ellis and Flanagan, 1st and 4th ranked for busy hookers). Out of all the hookers with significant game time last year, that puts them only behind Smith (2nd- boosted by goal kicking) and Farah (3rd). Kingston also has an exceptionally low number of missed and ineffective tackles compared to tackles made.

Halfback
Because backs play more football than forwards, they accumulate fantasy points at a slower rate per minute, but similar per game played. However, looking at all backs compared to each other, it won’t surprise anyone to know the “busiest” halfbacks, in order, are Thurston, Cronk, and Orford (Being a goalkicker helps a bit- you earn more points per minute because goals count as well as tries). What surprised me was that Kimmorley is 22rd of 26, ahead of only Shane Perry and Luke Walsh, and two players that did not play last season). I am not a Kimmorley knocker, I think he tries hard and some games over the last few years he has been one of the only players I’d say was putting in 100%. But looking at last years stats (weighted per minute to account for how much game time he had), he didn’t actually do much last year, other than tackle. He makes plenty of tackles for a halfback, but not many tries, try assists, linebreaks or linebreak assists. These stats don’t count kicking (a vital part of a halfback’s role), and even though he hasn’t been the best kicker for a few years, I think he would move up any ranking that counted kicks as well (he is still better than Orford at kicking!:nodlaugh).

Backs
As most of the points earned for backs are for try scoring, no Sharks backs were particularly good value based on last years stats! Stephenson is 10th busiest outside back (because of the limited game time he had), and Covell 11th busiest because he is a regular goal kicker and is therefore regularly scoring something, at least. Covell is also good value in the Fantasy team, costing 9 points but earning 452 last year (50 points earned per point of cost). I think I’ll include him in my fantasy team on the hope that the Sharks will actually score more tries this year and he’ll therefore earn more points than last year.

Mitch Brown is next at 39 (out of 81). (The best outside backs were Reynoldson, Bowen, Stewart, Creagh, Turner and Slater- exactly as would be expected except for Reynoldson and Creagh, who are so high up because they have been classified as outside backs, but played as back rowers (and will again) and so earn heaps of points for their tackles and hit ups.)

The inside backs (including 5/8 in the fantasy competition) are similarly dismal for the Sharks compared to other backs. While Gasnier, Ropati and Soward earn the most fantasy points per minute on the field, Pomeroy is the best shark at 25th out of 66 (one behind Beau Scott…:rant…he also got a boost from playing as a forward and counting as a back…). The only other inside back at the Sharks, according to this competition’s classifications is Seymour, and he comes in at 50th busiest.

If you made it this far, I hope this was vaguely interesting to you. There are many different ways I have been looking at last season's stats to help me pick a fantasy team, but I have included the main ones above. If anyone is interested in further discussion along these lines (or would like me to post my probable fantasy team and justifications) please reply.

Looking forward to a great season :cheers

I know nothing about fantasy leagues but there's plenty of food for thought there from a footy perspective as well...well done mate and please don't feel you have to restrict your expertise to the fantasy stuff! :)
