Cronulla Sharks board lifts suspension of coach Shane Flanagan
Phil Rothfield
The Daily Telegraph
March 22, 2013 10:35AM

COACH Shane Flanagan is back in charge of the Cronulla Sharks despite admitting to the "management failures" for which he was stood down.

"It has been a tough few weeks for all of us, but I now understand why I was stood down and why the board made the decisions it has," Flanagan said. "There were management failures. We have agreed that there have to be changes in the way we work and the way we look after players."

As foreshadowed on this website at 9.15am, the Sharks board announced the lifting Flanagan’s suspension at a 10.15am press conference, allowing him to return for Sunday's game against the New Zealand Warriors.

Flanagan, who is expected to return to training tomorrow, was stood down two weeks ago in relation to the doping scandal engulfing the club. Four senior staff were also sacked.

And with the doping crisis in mind, the board will now impose a strict set of guidelines on Flanagan now he’s back in charge.

"The board and Shane have agreed that new management processes must be implemented in the future with specific reference to responsibilities required of him as head coach of the club," new chairman Glenn Coleman said.

Cronulla’s four sacked officials - football general manager Darren Mooney, head trainer Mark Noakes, physiotherapist Konrad Schulz and long-serving team doctor Dave Givney – remain on the outer, but have the backing of Flanagan.

"I’d like to see the other staff come back," he said.

Flanagan’s reappointment will bring relief to the entire playing squad, who have been vocal in their support for their coach.

Sharks captain Paul Gallan led the push for Flanagan to retain his job.

The possibility he could be reinstated arose when Damian Irvine quit as chairman last week, with Coleman taking over.

He said nothing of the sort.

This is Phil Rothfield making stuff up to suit his agenda.

And all it takes is one stupid little white lie comment from a journalist and it change the entire slant of someone's perceived opinion or stance on matters.

Another reason why journalism in Australia is rooted.

Listening and reading Flannagans statement very carefully it is clear that he has said what he had to say to get back with the team. He made the statement he had to make using the terminology put in his mouth. Honerable. he didnt blame he didnt get angry, he didnt even deny not knowing anything, he represented the sharks well in front of the media. Board members take note.

1. An in house review of management failures led to his suspension and an independant review led to his reinstatement.
2. He denies any wrong doing and gets suspended and then admits it and gets reinstated. Something wrong with this picture.

Would love to know what the actual management failures were. If the failures were present before flannagan.

My take on it he didn't have much of an idea what was going on then was given the report by the board last night or this morning thus the light bulb lit up and then a oh wuck moment, followed by I understand how do we move forward.

Thats my hypothetical.

Im calling bull**** thats all. Either way the outsome is great for the player and the club and fans. I just dont beleive the press release due to how insync it was with flannos statement.

Journos vindicating the board? I mean there is still an asada investigation with a focus on the players not the club, the liability to the club and the board is still there, via a duty of care from the players. These journos are best reporting when all is known. As are some people on this forum who themselves blindly back the board. Its common knowledge the players themselves have independant legal representation

An observation from Captain Nark

I agree with Sharkster's post 100%

I am happy Flanno is back, however today I am even more concerned about this thread.

I am not having a go at you Louis, so please don't take this as a personal attack, however if indeed Louis has received information preceding the Boards formal decision and announcement, it further implies our governance or someone associated with the club in some way is behaving in a very inappropriate manner.

It is one thing to be told information, it is another to then post it on a public forum, which we know is monitored by the very people we criticise for putting out stories about our club. Who do you think their source is in some cases?

I suggest that Louis be very careful what he posts from now on.

If you know forum members personally, pm them with information. If you are speculating I suggest saying, this is just speculation.

I might sound like a spoil sport, however if ever our club needs the Board, staff, players, members and fans to hang tight and not give rise to further unfounded or speculative media, I suggest it is now.

Makes me wonder how post #66 slipped under the radar. Wouldn't be surprised if the press are all over this sniffing for more dirt.

Flanno will be counting his lucky stars right now. The board could easily of just sacked him as well. The presser affirms that the board's decision to suspend was correct. I'm pleased Flanno has been able to recognise he was part of the management failures. You can't be the Apex leader and not be aware of what is going on. It's like having the head disconnected from the body.

Onwards!
