So what happens if Merge sign a player and then the charges get dropped?
What happens if Dragons offer overs to a replacement to get them to ask for a release, then De Belin found not guilty in three months time.
They now have an extra, fairly good player and some other club suffers that loss of a player while Dragons now have an extended cap on everyone else.
This cap concession thing seems too hard to manage if implemented prior to an outcome.
Maybe if you stand down a player on full pay pending court outcome and NRL choose to de-register him when found guilty you can have something like half their wage spent while stood down scratched off your cap, along with obviously all money they have remaining on their contract. Can't necessarily sign anyone depending on timing but you can still use it. Club is still disadvantaged by
their players behaviour, but not as badly.
If they are not guilty maybe the full amount spent while they aren't playing gets scratched off. If you choose to keep playing them their full season counts against your cap regardless of outcome.
Sure if a player makes a bad decision it's unfair that the club and fans suffer... but not more unfair than an injury or (in game) suspension. If anything not raping people is something players have more control over than an ACL or accidental high shot.
