Great, big Manu must be salivating at the chance to give Covell a bath again. **** he is the worst player in the league and I'm sick of seeing him getting picked. Covell has done sweet **** all since he come back and I really don't see why we keep gifting him games when we should be looking to the future.

manu is a left side winger, judging by last weekend, its indeed blake who will be get the pasting

Sharks vs. Warriors

The second-to-last place Sharks are at home in Toyota Stadium this Saturday against the New Zealand Warriors.

The Warriors are still battling for a play-off spot, currently sitting in eighth place, and are interested in making up for their loss at home last week to the Titans.

The Sharks had a strong Round-21, as despite losing they played well against a tough Wests Tigers side.

Covell over Gordon? What a deadset joke!

Disappointed with no Vave again.

Covell was good last week, I'd have him in the team.

I think Gordon is unlucky to miss out from Fergo. Fergo was one of the best on ground last week but if Gordon has re-signed with us and is the future and Fergo has said he is leaving because we can't win a premiership and is not exactly an established first grader himself then should we really be playing him?

Surprised to see Smith on the bench again. Is Porter only in until Smith is 100% again or does it mean Smith will play off the bench at some point and Tautai or someone gets dropped?

if they were to do that with someone i would rather do it with albert

Yeah me too actually, he was good in that role at the start of the season, even if he wasn't ready yet.

Sharks v Warriors
Toyota Stadium
Saturday 7.30pm

Nostradamus is pointing the finger squarely at this game in Round 22 action, with his bold statement affecting the Warriors – win here or your season is over.

The Warriors might be eighth right now and could, with some luck, qualify for finals with two wins from the last five but they will more likely need three from five. We here at nrl.com are prepared to say if this match isn’t one of those three, they are done and dusted.

They do have a good chance against the Knights at home in Round 23 but finish the season against the Sea Eagles, Broncos and Eels and if they need to win the majority of those games, the feeling is 2010 will be one of regret.

On the other hand, if they can win this match and back it up with a win over Newcastle, then trying to jag one from three over the final three weeks is something they can potentially make happen. Also, with their nearest chasers both underdogs this weekend, this is the chance to put a gap on the pack.

The Sharks are playing for pride now and have in fact been pretty competitive in the past two weeks against Canberra and the Wests Tigers since Shane Flanagan took over as coach – you could even say they were robbed in both cases, with controversial moments affecting the results.

They will not lie down for the Kiwi-based side, you can be sure of that, and this probably represents their best chance for a win before the season is out.

They have retained the side beaten by the Tigers, although Tim Smith has once again been added as an 18th man.

The Warriors face the prospect of potentially falling to 10th if they lose here, but can get as high as fifth with a win and other results favouring them.

Joel Moon comes into the side at centre, pushing Lewis Brown to the second row and Jacob Lillyman to the bench.

Watch out Sharks: Former sacked Shark Brett Seymour returns to Toyota Stadium with a point to prove. While Seymour hasn’t played in the league of the gun halfbacks in the competition and injuries have restricted him to just seven games this year, he is averaging the least number of touches by a half for every try created. He touches the ball 38.1 times before creating a four-pointer – the best of the number sevens – and he’d love nothing more than to tighten that average even more against his old mates.

Watch out Warriors: The Sharks have nothing to lose and as such are likely to continue throwing the ball around, particularly post-contact to create second-phase play.

The Sharks have pumped out 269 offloads this season to be up with the best, while the Warriors, once known as offload kings, have dished out just 227 for the year.

Paul Gallen is the second-most prolific offloader in the league (with 46) and if recent seasons are anything to go by he chances his arm more and more when the result is inconsequential to the finals picture.

Anthony Tupou ranks fifth in the NRL for offloads (40), making him another to watch. Meanwhile, there isn’t a single Warrior in the top 20 for offloads…

Where it will be won: Containing ‘The Beast’. This match could very easily boil down to the contribution of giant Warriors winger Manu Vatuvei.

‘The Beast’ as they call him comes up against the much smaller and slower Luke Covell and even if the wingers swap, Blake Ferguson has already played his hand when it comes to desire for Cronulla.

Vatuvei is the linchpin of the Warriors’ attack; he has 14 tries and 12 line-breaks in just 13 games. His size and strength make him a real “animal” to contain and he also brings pace to the Warriors’ backs.

If the Sharks allow the ball to get out to the left sideline often, they will get rolled. They have had a massive issue all season in reading simple shifts and with Vatuvei on the end of the Warriors’ line they won’t be able to recover from a misread.

But if they can stunt the big unit’s involvement, the Warriors will be forced to look elsewhere for points – which may put a heavy burden on the halves and fullback Lance Hohaia. On occasions these guys have been great but on others, not so.

Cage ‘The Beast’ – win the match; let him loose – get mauled.

The history: Played 25; Sharks 13, Warriors 12. These two teams have shared results over the past eight games, going win-loss in the process. With the Warriors having won in New Zealand earlier this year, the current trend points towards a Cronulla victory.

The head-to-head record at the venue also points this way, with the Warriors having won just three of 11 matches against the Sharks at Toyota Park.

Conclusion: With the Titans versus Eels match having already been decided on the Friday night, the Warriors will have plenty of motivation going into this match. If the Eels win, they could potentially have already pushed the Warriors out of the top eight, making the match even more vital. Should the Titans win, the Warriors have a great chance to put a gap on the Eels (and potentially Souths, who play at the same time) and create a small buffer inside the top eight.

With so much on the line the Warriors should win, but if you do need an upset and you’re not sure where to take it, this could be the match.

The Sharks have toiled hard in recent weeks and they really want at least one win for the new coach. This is probably their best chance.

Match officials: Referees – Steve Lyons & Chris James; Sideline Officials – Jeff Younis & Luke Potter; Video Ref – Chris Ward.

Televised: Fox Sports – Delayed 9.30pm.

Cronulla v Warriors, Toyota Stadium, Sydney, Saturday 7:30pm (EST)
Cronulla are back at home for the first time under new coach Shane Flanagan. They will want to give their fans every reason to look forward to the 2011 season. The Warriors have been strong up until a couple of weeks ago, dropping consecutive games to fall back to eighth. The Sharks might not have had the execution in their play over the past few weeks but I like the commitment they have shown. The Warriors really need to win but I think the Sharks can upset them in a close one.

Rapira could feature for Warriors

The Warriors will leave it late before deciding whether Kiwis prop Sam Rapira features in Saturday night's NRL match against the Sharks in Cronulla.

Rapira has returned to training after three months on the sidelines and is in contention to come into the Warriors' 17.

Coach Ivan Cleary said today that a decision on whether Rapira plays or not will be made on game day.

Rapira will travel with the squad and they plan to bring him into the side if he is ready.

Cleary said the Warriors are conscious not to rush him back too soon.

League: Seymour bites back

Seymour bites back
05/08/2010 11:14 AM
Liam Napier

Warriors playmaker Brett Seymour is keen to show the Cronulla Sharks what they once had on Saturday.

The half-back says he's not bitter, but he has a point to prove.

The Sharks dumped Seymour in July last year after he was caught punching a bathroom mirror at a Cronulla nightclub, the last of a repeated trend in alcohol-fuelled incidents.

A career lifeline presented itself in Auckland and Seymour swooped - focused and determined to rebuild his tarnished reputation.

He was missing through injury when the Warriors defeated his former club 30-16 in Round 2, but just try to hold him back this weekend.

"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to the game. I'll have to keep the emotions in check," Seymour said on Thursday.

"Although there were a few bad times there, I certainly became close to some people. It's a place I was at for a few years and had a bit of success. Things haven't gone as well [for the Sharks] since myself and Greg Bird parted ways [with the club]."

That's up there with the understatement of the year.

Cronulla have been horrible, only saved from the wooden spoon by the salary-cap cheating Storm and their coach Ricky Stuart gave up two weeks ago. But Seymour believes that could have aided the club.

"They will be desperate," he said. "I known the spirit in that place and after the year they've had, they'll be looking finish off strong."

Seymour reckons NSW five-eight Trent Barrett, lock Paul Gallon, and prop Kade Snowden are dangerous, but he will shed his inside knowledge on the trio.

It's fitting Australian rockstar Jimmy Barnes visited the Warriors on Thursday, because his song 'there ain't no second prize' is ringing loud and clear in what coach Ivan Cleary described as a must-win match.

Facts are, the toothless Sharks have won five of 19 games this year. There are tougher matches to come for the Warriors. A loss will see credibility, and finals aspirations, plummet.

Good news is - Sam Rapira could be back.

Rapira, the form NRL prop before fracturing his kneecap in May, will travel with the squad to Sydney. A call on whether he will start from the bench will be made later in the week.

Seymour and five-eighth James Maloney, who have been paired together only six times this year, both admitted they were poor in the loss to the Titans last week, the eighth-placed Warriors second consecutive defeat after a five-match winning streak.

"We took a step back last week, James and myself," Seymour said. "The errors were really costly when we could have put our foot on the throat. We're expecting a better performance out of the both of us, especially myself. Although we weren't flash on the weekend, we're not losing any faith."

Maloney was also keen to improve while ensuring Seymour enjoyed a pleasant homecoming.

"The amount of errors we came up with at the weekend, for guys who touch the ball so much, was way too high. We can't have that. We have to steady the ship and be reliable," he said.

"It's a very important game to get back the flow, get the two points and stay up above the logjam [on the NRL ladder] that you don't want to be sitting in."

Warriors: Seymour to keep emotions in check

Seymour to keep lid on emotions
2:46 PM Thursday Aug 5, 2010
- NZPA

Halfback Brett Seymour will look to keep his emotions in check when the New Zealand Warriors try to get their National Rugby League (NRL) playoff hopes back on track on Saturday night.

Seymour will be up against Cronulla for the first time since his contract was terminated by the Sydney club last year because of alcohol-related incidents.

The 25-year-old Queenslander said today that he felt no bitterness over the manner of his departure from the Sharks midway through his third season with them.

It was "the way the cookie crumbled" and he was happy with where he was at the moment.

Still, having missed the Warriors' round-two win over Cronulla in Auckland in March because of injury, Seymour was eagerly awaiting the return clash at Toyota Stadium.

"I would be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to the game," he said.

"It's a place I was at for a few years and had a little bit of success there.

"It will be a good night. I'll have to keep the emotions in check and worry about the footy in front of me."

Like many of the Warriors' frontline personnel, Seymour has spent a significant portion of this season sidelined with injury.

He broke a thumb on his Warriors debut and missed seven matches, then suffered a leg fracture that kept him out for another month and a half.

In all, he has managed to appear in just seven of the Warriors' 19 matches.

After building up a good partnership with another Warriors new boy in five-eighth James Maloney, the pair were below par in the 28-20 home defeat to Gold Coast last weekend.

They found themselves overshadowed by the opposition halves paring of Scott Prince and Mat Rogers, as the Titans climbed to fifth on the table and the Warriors dropped to eighth.

Seymour said lapses in concentration and "a few silly errors" cost the Warriors, who let slip an early 12-0 lead, and he and Maloney "can take a little of the rap for that".

"We probably took a step back, James and myself," he said.

"When we could have put our foot on the throat, we turned over possession, and Princey put us away, him and Rogers. We're expecting a better performance out of both of us, especially myself."

Seymour said the couple of passes of his that failed to find their mark weren't the result of any lingering issues with his thumb.

"It's just skill and I'll sort that out," he said.

"I'm sure it won't be a problem this weekend.

While the Sharks, who have only Melbourne below them on the table, are out of playoff contention, Seymour said the likes of lock Paul Gallen, five-eighth Trent Barrett and prop Kade Snowden gave them a dangerous look.

"They will certainly want to win this game," he said.

"They always play well against New Zealand and it's no different this week. We expect a really tough battle."

It's the final countdown

<EDITED>

Cronulla have had a terrible run this season and at times you would have notched this game up as an easy win but now they could quite easily derail the Warriors' run.

They are a team who will be motivated to ruin the run of teams who are close to the hunt.

And on paper they have the firepower to take down even the best.

They'll take their lead from their skipper-in-waiting Paul Gallen and they won't be worried about getting dirty.

They're not a team of no names by any measure but what they have lacked is a decent game plan.

This is where the Warriors will need to focus their attention.

They've gone away from their solid defensive efforts and in the last two weeks they've let in a massive 66 points.

That's what you call a coach killer.

They were going so well but with two slip ups they've let their points differential slide horrendously.

If you put the two points aside this is a game the Warriors need to use to get some confidence and self belief back.

There's a good chance Sam Rapira will be back this week and that will add some starch to their forward pack which has gone off the boil a little.

Errors have also been far too costly for the Warriors.

James Maloney made six last weekend against the Titans his kicking game was poor and that will need to change if they want the result at Toyota Park.

The Warriors haven't travelled well to the Shire in the past and this week they come up against a team who are all out to impress the new boss for season 2011.

I'd expect to see some shuffling before kick-off, the Warriors have named an extended bench as have the Sharks so maybe hold off on your first try-scorer bets until closer to game time.

Prediction: I'm a little nervous about this one but I'm backing our boys to get a hard fought win and keep themselves in the eight.

Preview: Sharks v Warriors

Toyota Park, Saturday, August 7, 7.30pm (AEST)

Preview: Sharks v Warriors
05/08/2010 5:05 AM
John Greco

VENUE & TIME: Toyota Park, Saturday, August 7, 7.30pm (AEST)
COVERAGE: Fox Sports
HEAD TO HEAD: Played 25 – Sharks 13, Warriors 12
LAST TIME: Round 2, 2010 – Warriors 30-16

WALKING WOUNDED: Exciting winger Blake Ferguson got through his return from a rib injury with no problems last weekend meaning Cronulla will go in with the same side as last round. Sharks coach Shane Flanagan has no real injury worries which is a huge plus just three weeks into his new role. In contrast the Warriors are still missing key trio Jerome Ropati (groin), Kevin Locke (hamstring) and Sam Rapira (knee) but they do welcome back Joel Moon in the centres.

FORM: They may have a new coach but it's been the same old story for the Sharks over the last couple of weeks. While they continue to try hard and threaten to pull off a win, when the match is in the balance they just don't have enough quality - or that slice of luck - to get them over the line. Unfortunately getting close is not good enough and their losing streak currently sits at five. Two weeks ago the Warriors were being talked about as a dark horse for the title after five straight wins. But two losses on the bounce - including a lacklustre home defeat to the Titans last weekend - has them battling to keep onto their spot in the top eight.

WHO'S HOT: Flanagan has no doubt got one eye on putting a competitive squad together for next season and in youngster Nathan Gardner he won't have to worry about the fullback spot. He might only be 11 games into his NRL career but the 20-year-old has looked like a seasoned veteran since his promotion from the Toyota Cup. Tough as nails, safe under the high ball and five tries since his call-up makes Gardner one player the Warriors must shut down if they hope for a win. There's not many more devastating players when he's on form than Warriors winger Manu Vatuvei. Known as 'The Beast', the 112kg Vatuvei has made a career of trampling over his opposite number and has a knack for scoring tries, grabbing 13 in as many games this season.

WE THINK: A fortnight ago this match would have seemed a definite two points for the New Zealanders but this looms as a potential banana-skin game for Ivan Cleary's side if they aren't fully on their game. The Sharks are generally hard to beat at their home ground on a Saturday night and they will definitely have a dig to try and give new boss Flanagan his maiden win before the end of the year. The Warriors are actually one side Cronulla have a winning record against over the last few years, winning six of the last 10 matches between the two sides. But with the threat of losing their spot in the top eight hanging over their head the Warriors should be a little too desperate for the home side. Warriors by 4.

TEAMS:
Sharks: Nathan Gardner, Blake Ferguson, Dean Collis, Ben Pomeroy, Luke Covell, Trent Barrett [c], Scott Porter, Kade Snowden, John Morris, Luke Douglas, Grant Millington, Anthony Tupou, Paul Gallen. Interchange: Josh Cordoba, Broderick Wright, Paul Aiton, Taulima Tautai, Tim Smith (one to be omitted).

Warriors: Lance Hohaia, Bill Tupou, Brent Tate, Joel Moon, Manu Vatuvei, James Maloney, Brett Seymour, Ben Matulino, Aaron Heremaia, Russell Packer, Simon Mannering [c], Lewis Brown, Micheal Luck. Interchange: Ian Henderson, Jesse Royal, Jeremy Latimore, Ukuma Ta'ai, Jacob Lillyman (one to be omitted).

Shane Flanagan will make his first appearance at Toyota Stadium as head coach this Saturday night when the Sharks take on the Warriors at 7.30pm.

Sharks fans are urged to come out and support both Flanagan and the players as they look to turn their recent good form into two points against a Warriors outfit coming off a 14-point loss.

Joel Moon will start in the centres and Lewis Brown in the second row for the Warriors while coach Ivan Cleary has named Jacob Lillyman on a five-man bench in a squad comprising the same 18 players involved in the Gold Coast loss. Prop Sam Rapira, centre Jerome Ropati and winger Kevin Locke are still on the injured list.

Former Sharks half-back Brett Seymour will also come up against his former club and says he's not bitter about his departure, but he has a point to prove.

The Sharks dumped Seymour in July last year after a number of off-field incidents.

A career lifeline presented itself in Auckland and Seymour swooped - focused and determined to rebuild his tarnished reputation.

He was missing through injury when the Warriors defeated his former club 30-16 in Round 2, but he is raring to go against the black, white and blue.

"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to the game. I'll have to keep the emotions in check," Seymour said on Thursday.

Sharks match is a huge one for Warriors
05 Aug 2010 6:54p.m.
By Sam Ackerman

On Saturday the Warriors are lining up a Sharks side with the worst attacking record in the NRL, on a five game losing streak, and would be running last if not for the Storm salary cap saga.

But don't tell coach Ivan Cleary.

“As you go through an NRL season starting with the draw when you first get it, you don't see many easy games, well you don't see any and I still don't see any,” says Cleary.

The Warriors finals momentum has stalled in recent weeks with back to back defeats and it's this time of year the calculators come out to work out the top eight cut-off.

“I think you need 30 to be safe, that’s historically pretty much the way it's been, I think it's probably going to be the same this year,” says Cleary.

If the coach is right the Warriors still have some hard work ahead of them. They sit in 8th place on 24 points which means they need three wins to make it to that 30 point safety zone.

Let's take a look at their remaining five games.

After the Sharks they host the Knights who have to win all their matches to make it in. Then two class teams currently on the same amount of points as the Warriors, the Sea Eagles and Broncos, before finishing the regular season with a tough assignment, the Eels in Parramatta.

Given that challenging draw Saturday's clash is taking on extra importance.

“We should be winning these tight games and we've got to win more than our fair share in the back end of this year. The Sharks is a must win for us and we'll worry about the rest after that,” says Warriors halfback Brett Seymour.

“They're below us on the table, I think if we get this win it will take a lot of pressure of us,” says Warriors prop Ben Matulino.

Watch the full interview with Ben Matulino

But while treating the Sharks as a threat the Warriors feel the time is right to get back on their winning path.

“If we deliver the sort of performance we're capable of then we give ourselves a chance to win and it starts this week,” says Cleary.

Given their run home, the sooner the better.

Ant’s Analysis – NRL Predictions Round 22
August 5, 2010 – 11:55 pm
by Ant Halstead

<EDITED>

Sharks v Warriors – 7:30pm Saturday August 7, Toyota Stadium

The Sharks were half decent against the Tigers last week, while the Warriors have gone off the boil. The Sharks lost their fifth straight game in heart breaking fashion. So close yet so far. The Warriors were flying high three weeks ago after their fifth straight win, only to come crashing back to Earth with consecutive losses against the Rabbits and the Titans. Again, this weekend’s game against the Sharks is a perfect opportunity for the Warriors to regain their form. It worked for Manly! The last time these two teams faced off in Round 2 earlier this season, the Warriors left the field victorious with a fourteen point margin. They were too good then, and they’ll be too good now. All the talk seems to be about how the Dragons are the real deal this season, because they are choking early, but everyone seems to be forgetting how good the Warriors can be. There aren’t too many teams in the top eight that haven’t struggled against New Zealand, and I’ll say it once again, bags not facing the Warriors in the finals. There is some hope for the Sharks, and if I were a betting man (HAH!) I would probably put some loose change on the Sharkies getting up. They have won seven out of nine at Toyota Park against the Warriors, so they could actually be a bit of a bogey team for the Warriors. Still, it will only be my loose change.

Warriors by 14.

Cronulla Sharks v NZ Warriors

Saturday, Toyota Stadium, 7.30pm

Cronulla Sharks v NZ Warriors
GREG PRICHARD
August 6, 2010

Saturday, Toyota Stadium, 7.30pm
Referees: Steve Lyons, Chris James
Head to head: Sharks 13, Warriors 12
Last clash: Warriors 30 bt Sharks 6 at EnergyAustralia Stadium (Rd 2 2010)
TAB SportsBet: Warriors $1.65, Sharks $2.20
FootyTab: Sharks +2.5

The Warriors had a tremendous run through the middle of the season to burst into the top eight despite ongoing injury problems, but have lost their last two games - away against the Rabbitohs and at home against the Titans. That has seen them slip back to eighth, with the risk that they could drop out of the eight if they lose here. So there is a lot of pressure on them to get the job done on the road.

The Sharks are ahead of only the Storm on the competition table. They have won just five games and lost 14 and a recent change of coach hasn't resulted in a win yet. They have been competitive under their new coach, Shane Flanagan, but have still lost to both the Raiders and Sharks. But those games were both on the road, and they should relish the opportunity to play at home here. That makes them dangerous.
