The Adjudicator: NRL R22

The Adjudicator has had to make some tough life decisions in the name of tipping and this week is no different. I feel dirty and disloyal, but anything for a perfect round.

The Adjudicator gives his verdict for round 22 of the NRL premiership
By The Adjudicator
August 06, 2010

<EDITED>

Cronulla v Warriors, Toyota Stadium, Saturday 7.30pm (EST)
The Adjudicator's verdict: "Firstly, kudos to Matt Colledge for exposing me as a closet North Sydney supporter - bring back the Bears! I was leaning towards the Sharks in my mid-week piece, and now I have decided to back them in officially. Brett Seymour, back in the Sutherland Shire, will be too busy apologising to locals to have his mind properly on the job. Shane Flanagan will run on to the field himself if the Sharks aren't leading at the 70-minute mark - but my information tells me they will be. Cronulla by four points."

LATEST COMMENTS FROM FANS

Wayne says: Sharks to win. They always trouble the Warriors. Might be the beginning of a few in a row! The forgotten shark Reece Williams sure has been missed this season. Sharks miss his solid defence, ball work and good head under pressure. Will he be back next year??

Phantom Warrior says: You’re being too harsh on the Warriors, although I agree this is no cakewalk. The Sharks are a far better team than their points tally suggests but the Warriors will be desperate – NZ by 4.

Matt Colledge says: What is your problem Mr A? you are now resorting to bagging the Titans on write ups for other teams. Where has all this hatred come from? Are you just a disgruntled North Sydney Bears supporter hating on the new team while you dont get to watch your beloved red white and black get thrashed? Poor mr A I feel for you, I mean, I've had to endure my team getting taken away from me three times (dont forget the giants as well as the chargers) but we're here to stay mate and we'll win the flag befor st george does!! P.s Warriors by 18

Iopati from Sunny Coast says: I'm backing the Warriors this week over the Sharks. The guppies have no answer to the worries style of play, whereas the other way around the guppies have nothing special to reply (unlike the Titans last week - against the majority tipping I did pick the Titans and in particular the unsung Matt Rogers magic to be the difference.) Worries take the bickies this week, the margin a Vatuvai double and 1 conversion.

Joel Moon a surprise starter for Warriors

Joel Moon a surprise starter for Warriors
Yahoo!Xtra Sport
August 3, 2010, 4:49 pm

Joel Moon will start in the centres and Lewis Brown in the second row in the Vodafone Warriors' 22nd-round NRL clash against the Cronulla Sharks at Toyota Stadium on Saturday night.

Moon, who was 18th man for last Sunday's home game against Gold Coast, returns in the role Brown filled against the Titans while Brown reverts to the back row.

Moon last played for the Warriors in their 12-6 win over Penrith last month but has since been turning out for the Auckland Vulcans in the New South Wales Cup. He played on the right side in the encounter with the Panthers but will team up with winger Manu Vatuvei on the left side against the Sharks.

With Brown starting, Warriors coach Ivan Cleary has named Jacob Lillyman on a five-man bench in a squad comprising the same 18 players involved in the Gold Coast loss. Lillyman was one of the starting back rowers against the Titans. Prop Sam Rapira, centre Jerome Ropati and winger Kevin Locke are still on the injured list.

Head coach Ivan Cleary said the Warriors' focus was firmly on this Saturday night's clash.

"That has always been our approach throughout the season. All we can take care of is the match we have right in front of us and that's exactly how it will be again this week," he said.

"While we didn't get the result we wanted against the Titans, there were aspects of our game that were encouraging but we will need to work a lot harder and show improvement against the Sharks.

"They've been playing strongly and, like every side in this competition, they pose a real challenge. We must be on our game to be in contention."

The match will give Vatuvei a chance to extend a sequence which has seen him score in each of his last seven appearances, equalling the club record set by winger/centre Todd Byrne in his first season with the Vodafone Warriors in 2005.

With eight tries across those seven games, Vatuvei now has 14 in 13 games this season and 43 in his last 49 NRL games. His career tally of 72 in 107 games is only five short of Stacey Jones' club record.

Great, big Manu must be salivating at the chance to give Covell a bath again. **** he is the worst player in the league and I'm sick of seeing him getting picked. Covell has done sweet **** all since he come back and I really don't see why we keep gifting him games when we should be looking to the future.

I'd like Gordon in there too, but I sure as hell prefer the thought of the Beast coming up against Cov than Gordon... it would be like a monster truck running over a barina. That being said, Cov had a shocker against him at the start of the year.

And if Fergo hasn't been resigned then he should not be playing.

Rapira may get chance to tackle Sharks
By Steve Deane
4:00 AM Aug 4, 2010

He hasn't been named in the squad but senior prop Sam Rapira could make his much-awaited Warriors return against the Sharks on Saturday night.

Rapira, who hasn't played since dislocating a kneecap in the round 11 victory over the Rabbitohs, reported for his first full training session yesterday and could be a late call-up to face the Sharks in a match crucial to the Warriors' finals aspirations.

"He could play this weekend if he gets through the whole week of training but obviously it is up to the [coaches] to pick him," said club doctor John Mayhew.

Rapira's recovery has been slower than hoped but, given initial fears the injury was a season-ending ligament rupture, a return with five matches remaining would still be a positive result.

"He was held back because he was still feeling pain in the back of the knee," Mayhew said.

"He had a bit of an abrasion at the back of the kneecap that was causing a bit of trouble when he was running but that has settled down."

If he misses the Cronulla match Rapira will almost certainly be back for the home match against the Knights on Sunday week.

Wing Kevin Locke (hamstring) is considered a near certainty to be fit for that match, while Jerome Ropati (adductor) is also a strong possibility but neither will play against the Sharks.

Joel Moon has been restored to the centres for Saturday's match, with Lewis Brown reverting to second row and Jacob Lillyman dropping to a five-man bench. Moon last played in the round 18 win over Penrith.

The club yesterday announced it had ended its interest in Steve Matai, withdrawing a contract offer to the Kiwis centre after failing to hear back from his manager Gavin Orr.

"We were keen to bring Steve to the Warriors but throughout the process he has indicated it is his preference to stay with Manly if it was possible," chief executive Wayne Scurrah said.

"We haven't heard from his manager since making our final offer and have now withdrawn it."

Forwards Ben Matulino and Ukuma Ta'ai have committed to the club, with both signing contract extensions yesterday.

Matulino, 21, has agreed to a two-year extension that will see him stay with the club until the end of the 2013 season. Ta'ai, 23, has signed a new deal for next year, while the club also has an option on him for 2012.

"Ben is still a young man but has already played more than 50 NRL matches and played test football for the Kiwis," coach Ivan Cleary said.

"He has been a really solid performer for us this season.

"Ukuma has also shown a lot of improvement since making his debut at this level last year.

"He's a player who is a real threat to opposition defences and one who has the potential to become a lot better yet."

Sharks Keen To Finish On A High

Hisense Sharks coach Shane Flanagan is convinced his side can end the season turning their narrow defeats into victories, starting this weekend.

Sharks Keen To Finish On A High

Hisense Sharks coach Shane Flanagan is convinced his side can end the season turning their narrow defeats into victories, starting with Saturday night's clash against the Warriors at Toyota Stadium.

Since taking over the coaching reins from Ricky Stuart two weeks ago, Flanagan has watched his team push the Raiders and Tigers all the way, only to come up short by seven and two points respectively.

It continues a trend that has hampered the club for most of the season of pushing opposition teams close without being able to get over the line often enough.

But as the season approaches the final few rounds Flanagan is confident luck is about to change for his troops.

"I feel for them (the players)," Flanagan said.

"They've battered their bodies for 21 rounds and haven’t got a lot of reward."

"But they are going to get some in the next couple of weeks, I'm sure of it."

Asked what he wanted from his side for the remainder of the season, the Sharks boss said it was more than about just about being competitive.

"We talked about getting some respect back," Flanagan said.

"But we went out to win it (on Saturday night against the Tigers) and we didn’t and we're very disappointed with that."

"Every week we are going out to win football games, not just compete."

"We could have and should have won (last Saturday night)."

But attention has quickly moved to the Warriors clash with Flanagan has naming an unchanged line-up for Saturday night's encounter.

"The Warriors will be an extremely tough side to play, especially coming off a loss."

"They will be pumped up and very physical... and with a top eight spot in their sights, I'm sure they will be up for a big game."

Scott Porter will continue to partner skipper Trent Barrett in the halves although half-back Tim Smith has been called into the squad on an extended bench.

The Warriors have made one change to their side with Joel Moon retuning in the centres, allowing Lewis Brown to revert to his natural position in the back-row.

Ivan Cleary's side are clinging on to eighth spot on the NRL ladder and will need a victory to keep their hopes of the finals alive following their loss to the Gold Coast last weekend.
