Drag Queen territory.
I had thought about making the trip down, but in the end I figured that it wasn't worth spending that much on petrol to go into the arse-crack of the world and freeze my own arse off.

Raiders' player power leads way

Canberra coach David Furner has taken a step back and put the onus on his senior players to lead the Raiders' charge to the NRL finals.

And with their top-eight hopes still dangerously close to falling off the edge, Furner's leaders are finally starting to deliver.

The coach has tasked Canberra's leadership group which includes injured captain Alan Tongue, Terry Campese, Josh Miller and Bronson Harrison as well as experienced duo David Shillington and Joel Monaghan with taking on more responsibility.

It started when the players led a training session last week.

The result was a 52-18 thrashing of the Newcastle Knights two days ago.

It's a system Furner wants to keep in place for the rest of the season.

The senior players will take charge again before the game against the Cronulla Sharks on Saturday.

And with the Raiders needing five wins from their last seven games to remain a finals contender, Canberra needs its leadership group to stand tall.

''I spoke to the senior leaders about it and when we're talking about our home record, we've been involved in some games we should have won,'' Furner said.

''I want it driven by the senior leaders ... the more involvement has to be player driven.

''It's no different this week, I want them to drive it and they have to.

''We haven't given up, we've had some tough losses and that takes a lot out of a team.

''You can do all the preparation, but at the end of the day it's the players out there playing and I'm really happy with the way they've responded.''

The Raiders have now won consecutive games and are 11th on the ladder.

Their win against the Knights was impressive, but they concede there's still room for improvement.

They scored at a blistering point-a-minute rate for the first 52 minutes and never allowed Newcastle into the contest.

Monaghan said having Tongue return to training last week was the catalyst for the Raiders' turnaround. The veteran forward is still at least a month away from fully recovering from his groin injury, but his presence boosted the squad.

Picker says injury won't stop him playing Sharks

Picker says injury won't stop him playing Sharks

Joe Picker is confident he will be fit to play the Cronulla Sharks on Saturday despite nursing a busted hand and sore shoulder.

A relieved Picker was yesterday cleared of any broken bones in his right hand or structural damage in his right shoulder.

However, the Canberra Raiders second-rower is expected to miss training for most of the week and it could cost him his place in the side.

Raiders coach David Furner will today name his team for the round 20 clash, with lock Shaun Fensom an outside chance of returning from an ankle injury.

''My hand isn't broken, it's just going to need a heap of work from the physio this week,'' Picker said.

''I'm confident the shoulder is right, I probably won't be able to do any contact this week.

''But I'll be letting Furnsy know that I'm sweet to play.''

Picker has cemented his spot as one of Canberra's starting second-rowers in recent weeks with Tom Learoyd-Lahrs moving up front.

He was impressive in the team's 52-18 win over the Newcastle Knights and is likely to keep the No11 jumper, should he get through training unscathed.

Always hate the talk that comes out of this garbage. It's never Stuart's coaching thats at fault - it's our roster.

I think this week is the week for people to show their enthusiasm and belief that this club can be turned around. Whilst not expecting or demanding a win from this round, a show of determination would be all that we can ask.

I'm looking forward to heading down and seeing the team step a foot in the right direction. Lets hope for a good result and a happy trip back! :)

I know this might be a dumb suggestion... but I love the idea of all Sharks fans at the game wearing black, white and blue "flanno" shirts as a kind of "Welcome Aboard" to Flanagan in his first game as Head Coach at the Sharks.

Either that or get a big piece of black, white and blue flannelette material and put a message like "WE'RE WRAPPED IN FLANNO" on it.
