Match Overview
Rivalry Round finishes off with a match of the round candidate at Win Jubilee Oval.
The Sharks enter the local derby on the back of four dominating victories, which has seen them move to tenth on the NRL ladder.
In the last four weeks they have been scoring at will, with halves Wade Graham and Chad Townsend playing spectacular football, and Paul Gallen now fully focused on the finals after NSW’s Origin campaign.
The Dragons are coming off the bye following a tough Origin period, which saw them win only one game from five and will miss Ben Hornby, who is out with an ankle injury, but welcome back their Origin stars and potentially Matt Cooper, who trained strongly throughout the week.
The Dragons will be keen to win this one for Mark Gasnier after the star centre announced his retirement for the end of the year, this will be his last game at Kogarah.
Strengths
The Sharks back-row have been in stellar form in the last month, with Paul Gallen, Jeremy Smith, Jason Bukuya and Anthony Tupou all making metres on the edges and up the middle. Gallen has been averaging 182m a game this season, and after a short rest through the week will be ready to rip in once again.
Weaknesses
The Sharks have won only one of eight games when either level or behind at half time, so a good start and the half-time lead is essential to a victory. This is particularly important against the Dragons, who can grind teams into the ground if they get ahead.
Opportunities
If the Sharks use their round two win over the Dragons as a guide, they should be planning to dominate the middle of the park. They bashed the Dragons forwards from pillar to post on that cold, wet March night, and with similar conditions expected for this week’s clash, the Sharks could once again look to out muscle the defending premiers.
Threats
The Dragons haven’t really hit top gear in 2011, and with the Sharks defending up-an-in, the sweeping play out the back from Jamie Soward and Darius Boyd could be a danger. The Dragons may have an an emotional edge with Gasnier playing his last game at Kogarah.
The Big Issue
The story of the premiership over the last month has been the resurgence of the Sharks, and another victory over the Dragons would only further press their finals hopes.
Cronulla haven’t won five games in a row since 2008, but will be keen to emulate that success, which saw them go within one game of the grand final.
Final Five
Dragons lead 4-1 with Cronulla winning their most recent encounter.
Key Stats
The Sharks second phase play has been the hallmark of their four-match winning run and a feature of it has been the return to form of Anthony Tupou who has ben producing the offloads that made him a representative star.
Conversely, Dragons centre Mark Gasnier hasn’t been going great guns and struggled for NSW throughout State of Origin, The retiring centre will have a lot on his mind heading into this game.
Punter's Pal
The Sharks have been fast starters in the past month, scoring first try in four of the past five games. Back a Sharks try as the first scoring play, at a juicy $2.75 with TAB Sportsbet.
