Herbert wins race to join Campese in Raiders' halves
BY MICHAEL INMAN
9/06/2009 1:16:00 PM

Marc Herbert will retain the Canberra Raiders' No7 jersey this weekend, defying a spirited challenge from teammate Josh McCrone.

Coach David Furner will announce his side today for Sunday's clash against the Cronulla Sharks, with his only change set to be Terry Campese's return from Origin.

Furner said McCrone did nothing wrong when he replaced Campese who was absent due to Origin commitments at five-eighth against South Sydney eight nights ago.

But he favoured Herbert's experience at halfback for the Sharks clash at Canberra Stadium.

Herbert cemented his place by leading the Raiders to a convincing 34-18 win over the Rabbitohs in round 12.

The 22-year-old playmaker relished the chance to step up in Campese's absence, scoring a try, setting up a further two and kicking five conversions in his 14th NRL appearance.

''Not to have Campo there on the weekend, I got to run the side and get my confidence up,'' Herbert said.

''When he was announced in Origin I, I was happy for him but it was also an opportunity for myself.

''Now with a couple of Origin games he's going to play I'll get a chance to do that [again].''

Yeah - i think we have the best record of any away team playing at Canberra. The prevailing theory is that most teams struggle to play in cold, wet, miserable conditions but the Sharks are used to it.

Canberra v Cronulla, Sunday 2pm (EST), Canberra Stadium
The Adjudicator says: "The Campese Factor will decide this one but not in the way you might expect. Since his Origin call-up, Tezza was forced to sit by and watch his Raiders teammates show just how little they need him to win, before going M.I.A. in a Blues debut to forget. To top it off, the ill-timed bye week has given Campo an extra seven days to reflect on his dwindling self-worth. Expect him to be the kill-joy in Canberra as a resurgent Sharks outfit keeps the dream alive."

Campese back for Raiders
Written by: Raiders media
Jun 9, 2009 3:30pm

The CFMEU Canberra Raiders will welcome back NSW Five-eighth Terry Campese this weekend, as the Raiders aim to win their third straight match when they take on the Cronulla Sharks at Canberra Stadium.

Campese’s inclusion in the side comes at the expense of Josh McCrone who will return to Souths Logan in the Queensland Cup and is the only change to the team that defeated South Sydney in round 12.

Raiders Coach David Furner said Campese would be a strong addition to the side, but also said he expected a big effort from the rest of the squad.

“Obviously the return of a guy like Campo makes a difference to the team but we did show last time we played that we can win and win well without him,” Furner said. “The squad had a really solid hit-out on Saturday over the bye weekend and we’re expecting to come out fit and fired up on Sunday.”

Furner said injured duo Justin Carney (Sternum) and David Shillington (Back) were probably still a week away from being available for selection, but noted their replacements have been playing some good footy in their absence.

“We’ve shown all year that we have plenty of depth in the squad so there is no need to rush anyone back from injury at this stage,” he said.

Raiders skipper Alan Tongue is set to lead the side again this weekend after starting the match against the Rabbitohs on the interchange bench, forcing Trevor Thurling back to the bench for the beginning of the match.

Hi guys,
I think the Shark will really be up against it again this week, if the front row don't hit the line hard like last week they will get dominated on the advantage line. Canberra seem to have one of the biggest packs in the comp. It looks like Shillington is out again so the main man to stop would be Tom Learoyd-Lahrs. If we don't stop that bloke it could be game over before we get there. Hopefully Porter can keep his kicking game up and keep the Raiders on the back foot, that should go a fair way too keeping there big forwards from getting a role on. I hope Mannah plays again, I think he has a good future. If Porter keeps playing the way his is I hope he stays there for the season, bugger names and reputation if he keeps playing well he should stay.

Wait for Campese swine flu results
BY MICHAEL INMAN, RUGBY LEAGUE
10/06/2009 7:19:00 AM

Canberra Raiders five-eighth Terry Campese will discover today if he has contracted swine flu.

The news that Queensland prop Ben Hannant fell ill with the virus in Melbourne last week has forced several clubs to quarantine players and the Raiders are taking precautions.

Campese, who sat next to Hannant during an appearance on The Footy Show last Thursday, was tested for the virus on Monday afternoon and the results will be known today.

The star pivot was not placed in quarantine, but was advised to limit his contact with the public.

Despite the drama Campese took part in a team weights session on Monday and is expected to attend training this morning.

''I got tested but it's all sweet because I'm feeling alright,'' Campese said.

''[I've been] kind of [quarantined] but not really.

''I'm not allowed within a metre of people, they just said try and limit contact to people, try to keep as far away as possible until you get the results back.

''But it's nothing really to worry about.''

I guess if you were a punter you would have to go Canberra because they are at home but geez I reckon those sides are pretty even, thats including our inexperienced youngsters.

Gallen has a LOT to prove this weekend.

Think about it, in the time since he last played he's missed out on origin and then our only two wins in months. He was also stripped of his captaincy. He's probably worried that he's being forgotten.

I think he will come out firing and with his only job being a back rower and not a captain any more, he's going to just focus on bringing the pain. Should be good to watch. I think he'll get a personal try by taking on the line and I think he's going to hurt a few Raiders.

Campese cleared of swin flu

Raiders and NSW five-eighth Terry Campese has been cleared of swine flu and will play against Cronulla at Canberra Stadium on Sunday.

Doctors cleared Campese of the H1N1 virus yesterday morning, allaying fears he had contracted it from the NRL's first confirmed swine flu case, Ben Hannant.

Campese sat next to Queensland and Bulldogs prop Hannant on the Footy Show last Thursday, a day after making his State of Origin debut in Melbourne.

"There's no swine flu at the Raiders," Campese said.

"I was never worried, I showed no symptoms, it was all precautionary and I had to go in and get the test just in case."

Raiders and Queensland statistician Col Bienke remains in quarantine, after coming in direct contact with Hannant last week.

Bienke is yet to learn if he has tested positive to swine flu.

Campese was cleared on the same morning the Brisbane Broncos were forced to cancel a training session and quarantine their entire NRL and Toyota Cup squads, amid fears Queensland star Karmichael Hunt had contracted the virus.

Just hope all the passion doesn't make him lose sense. Last thing he needs is another suspension for silly play.
