What's the bar for "personal attack" though? Obviously racist **** like old mate Paul C is out, but can I call someone a ********? What if they don't care, can someone be offended on their behalf?
If you have to justify calling someone
whatever, maybe just don't call them that. Opinions are fair game. People are not.
If you want to tell someone that they must have been watching the game with their head up their ass, go nuts. That's you telling them you don't agree with their take. If three messages later you say "go eat a dick, ****face", now we've crossed a line from criticising the person's opinion to abusing them.

This does happen.
If someone reports it, a mod reads through the interaction and makes a call whether to have the site issue an automatic warning or to reach out informally to just let the posters know that they probably went a bit far. Sometimes deleting the posts and adding a note to in the thread is enough. Sometimes it isn't.
For me, I've never had the system issue a warning for something that was the person's first instance of poor behaviour. Most posters on here I have a good relationship with, so I am happy to reach out to directly to let them know we've noticed it. New members or problematic posters I would probably just let the system do its thing.
