mate that is a real shame, I am sure many of the appreciated your kind words as many of us will apreciate the kind workd from them, dont let a few bad apples spoil it for ya buddy, and keep your chin up, I am sure our Sharks will once again be a real force to be reconed with, look how well the dogs are going, there is no reason the Sharks cant do the same, it would appear they need to have a clean out like the dogs did, and do like Greenbuger did and imply a no idiot policy, means letting go any trouble makers from the club no matter how good they are, I am afraid if I was running the club Gal would be the first to go.

honestly, as harsh as I might sound, we need to attract sponsors to our club and better our clubs image in the comunity, as hard as uit is to believe many see our club as a club with a bad culture similar to the way others viewed the dogs a few years back and judging by a few on this site some still do, same applies to the sharks and gal has the potentual to cause us heaps of grief, had Paea decided to go further we would have been in the pappers all over again for all the wrong reasons, we would be called racist rapists and girl bashers, by others, and it would destroy our club

I know gal got away with it this time but he is a grub and his time is runing out and he just dont seem to learn he always seems to do thuggish things, once a bad boy always a bad boy look at reni,

Gallen in the clear over Paea bust-up

By Steve Jancetic
24 May 2009 20:48:10

NRL officials will not take any action against Paul Gallen following suggestions the Cronulla skipper racially abused St George Illawarra forward Mickey Paea in Saturday night's local derby.

Paea and Gallen became involved in a heated exchange eight minutes from fulltime in the Dragons' 26-4 win over the embattled Sharks at Toyota Stadium, with television commentators claiming the incident may have been sparked by racial vilification.

Paea declined to make an official complaint at the time of the incident and indicated after the game that he didn't want any action taken against the Test forward.

NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley said the league had contacted the host broadcasters on Saturday night to see if there was any evidence of racial abuse, with Fox Sports indicating nothing had been caught either on video or audio from the game.

"In the absence of any complaint and without any other evidence, there's really nowhere it can go," Annesley said.

"You need a complaint to deal with it under the anti-vilification code, but there's obviously the match review committee and the NRL code of conduct which can also come into play depending on what evidence is available, but at the moment there really isn't any evidence.

"We checked with Fox Sports last night and they claim they don't have anything and clearly the player has indicated he's not prepared to lodge a complaint, without that there's very little room to move."

The drama surrounding Gallen was the last thing the Sharks needed as they slumped to their ninth straight loss, just one short of the club record.

Their struggles on the field pale into insignificance when compared to their off-field dramas, the club mired in massive debt and battling for its very survival.

The Sharks are set to deliver a report to the NRL on Monday morning to explain a long list of off-field indiscretions and to detail the club's plan to escape from its financial problems.

if anyone didnt see/hear the microphone footage, you can hear paea say to the ref "he called me a black *beeep*" then he finds gallen and says "you racist, never say that again"

I think it is pretty obvious what has happened but im sure you will all pull the "no proof" card as you all did with the greg bird saga

If Gallen said that then he is a dead set idiot. Why cant our players just not do anything stupid for a few weeks while our club is so vulnerable in a PR sense. But seems like he obviously did say it and now watch this be the headlines for a few days. Can't we catch a ****ing break!!!

MICKEY PAEA has been urged to pursue racial abuse allegations against Cronulla captain Paul Gallen amid claims that players will continue to take matters into their own hands unless officials act to stamp out racism in the game.

While NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley yesterday said there was little that could be done without Paea giving evidence against Gallen, Test stars Frank Pritchard, Setimata Sa and Sam Thaiday told the Herald that racial slurs should not be tolerated. They were supported by former NSW Origin star Anthony Mundine and Gold Coast chief executive Michael Searle.

Mundine, who lodged a complaint that led to Bulldogs prop Barry Ward being suspended for racial comments in 1998, said players should receive 10-match bans for racial abuse.

South Sydney sacked Bryan Fletcher from the captaincy, stood him down for one match and imposed a $10,000 fine after investigating claims that he had racially abused Parramatta's Dean Widders in a game in 2005, but Cronulla officials appear to have no intention of looking into the allegations against Gallen.

After chasing Gallen following a tackle, Paea could be heard to say: "Don't ever say that again". He then told the match officials: "He called me a black ----. He's a racist."

Dragons skipper Ben Hornby told the referees Paea wanted to make a formal complaint but when pressed, the Tongan World Cup representative changed his mind.

But several other players said they would support Paea if he wanted to take the matter further. "If it was me, I probably would have told the ref," Pritchard said. "It doesn't matter if you're white, black, yellow or brown, I don't think any racial slur should be tolerated, it's wrong."

Thaiday said that if the alleged slur had occurred "it is out of line and it is offensive".

"Whatever punishment the NRL come up with, I will back because it is important to deal with these things," the Brisbane forward said.

Mundine, who watched the game on television in his Brisbane hotel room as he prepared for Wednesday night's middleweight world title bout against Daniel Geale, described racism as a "cancer in the game" and said the NRL had to act as many players felt uncomfortable making a complaint.

"It's a disgrace if that did happen and nothing is done about it," Mundine said. "I think Mickey Paea should be encouraged and supported to stand up against that sort of stuff because it's been going on for too long and it has to be stopped.

"Mickey Paea seems like a shy kid. He probably doesn't want the heat on him, so there's no way he was going to say anything. That's the culture that exists in the game. They feel like the system is against them.

"But [NRL chief executive] David Gallop should step in and do something about it. If they are serious about wanting to get racism out of the game, and a player said that, he should get fined big money and suspended for 10 matches.

"They've got to deal with it the way they have with other things, like the judiciary and referees."

Sa, a close friend of Paea's, said he was not surprised his deeply religious former Roosters teammate did not want to pursue the matter further.

"The way Mickey reacted will show that he doesn't condone it, but he is a very forgiving person, so he would rather go forward than seek revenge," Sa said.

"I don't know how I would react because it's never happened to me, but I think I would try to retaliate to it on the field and keep it there."

Pritchard said he would also seek justice on the field if he were racially abused.

"I would have done what Mickey did and chased him around the field," he said.

Searle, who has proposed an annual match between the Indigenous Dreamtime team and an NRL All Stars side, said there was no place for racism in the game.

"No one can even attempt to justify or defend it," Searle said. "I understand blokes are out there in the heat of the battle but that is no excuse." Gallen and Sharks chief executive Tony Zappia did not return the Herald's calls yesterday, while Dragons CEO Peter Doust said: "As far as we're concerned, the matter is settled."

Racism is a 'cancer in the game'

May 25, 2009

ANTHONY Mundine last night claimed racism was a cancer in the NRL and called on chief executive David Gallop to step in and take action against Paul Gallen following allegations he racially abused St George Illawarra's Mickey Paea during Saturday night's game.

As the NRL found itself again gripped by controversy, Mundine, a former NRL star who is now a world boxing champion, wasn't the only prominent figure with Gallen in his sights.

Gold Coast managing director Michael Searle called on the Sharks captain to make a full and unreserved apology to the indigenous community as well as other nationalities in the game.

Gallen, who appears likely to escape sanction by the NRL because Paea did not lodge a formal complaint, declined to comment on allegations he called the Dragons forward a "black ...." when contacted yesterday.

However, pressure is growing on both the NRL and Cronulla to take action against the NSW and Australia forward.

If the allegations are founded, it is difficult to envisage Gallen remaining as captain. At the very least, Mundine and Searle believe an apology is in order.

"It's a disgrace if that did happen and nothing is done about it," Mundine said.

"I think Mickey Paea should be encouraged and supported to stand up against that sort of stuff because it's been going on for too long and it has to be stopped.

"It's like a cancer in the game and the NRL has to come down hard on it. That's one of the reasons I left the game."

Mundine, preparing for his world title fight against Daniel Geale in Brisbane on Wednesday night, made a racism allegation against former Bulldogs forward Barry Ward a decade ago when he was playing with the Dragons.

Despite turning his back on the game in 2000 to pursue a boxing career, Mundine believes racism remains rife in the NRL.

He also claimed Paea was a victim of the culture in the game, which he said discouraged Aboriginal and islander players from standing up for themselves.

"Mickey Paea seems like a shy kid," Mundine said.

"He probably doesn't want the heat on him so there's no way he was going to say anything.

"That's the culture that exists in the game. They feel like the system is against them. The league isn't run by islanders.

"But David Gallop should step in and do something about it. With all the stuff that has been going on at the moment, the NRL probably doesn't want any more **** in the game, but it would be a positive thing if they clamped down hard and put a stop to racism.

"If they are serious about wanting to get racism out of the game, and a player said that, he should get fined big money and suspended for 10 matches. They've got to deal with it the way they have with other things like the judiciary and referees."

Mundine's allegation against Ward was not an isolated incident. Four years ago, Dean Widders was lauded for going public after being racially slurred by then-South Sydney captain Bryan Fletcher. Fletcher was stripped of the captaincy, fined and suspended for one game.

Last year, Penrith captain Petero Civoniceva was racially abused by Eels supporters at Parramatta Stadium. The NRL acted in those cases because the player on the receiving end made a formal complaint.

However, Paea told The Australian last night he had forgiven Gallen and reiterated he would not press for a formal allegation.

"It's done and dusted," Paea said. "I have already moved on. He apologised. He's sorry."

Following Paea's interview, the NRL again contacted St George Illawarra officials.

"On the basis of the comments that were given to The Australian we again approached the Dragons to ask them were they prepared to go on with this matter. And they again, after checking with the player, reiterated that the player will not be giving a statement to the NRL and did not want to take the matter any further," NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley said.

"However, as a result of the comments the NRL intends to continue its investigation tomorrow to determine if any action is required."

While Paea is willing to let it rest, others aren't. Searle, who is attempting to celebrate the game's indigenous players with an annual game, was livid.

"It is completely inappropriate and is something our game cannot, and I would like to think will not, tolerate," Searle said.

"No one can even attempt to justify or defend it. I understand blokes are out there in the heat of the battle but that is no excuse.

"It is not in the code, it is one fool making an inappropriate comment in the heat of the game.

"He needs to come out and apologise not just to (Paea) but to the entire Australian indigenous and all the other different communities in our game that would find that offensive.

"This is the 21st century and that sort of crap isn't acceptable."

Brisbane and Queensland forward Sam Thaiday claimed the game's culture needed to be celebrated and warned racism needed to be stamped out.

"It is a touchy subject, but what it comes down to is the fact there is just no need for it," Thaiday said.

"There is never any need to speak like that out there. It is out of line and it is offensive.

"Whatever punishment the NRL come up with, I will back because it is important to deal with these things."
