Not only is Ray Hadley a rubbish commentator, he is a stain of a human being. He is just an ex-taxi driver who made his way to the top as a right-wing nutjob appealing to the lowest common denominator. The entire Channel 9 commentary team are a joke. Don't get me started on Ray Warren, he's just as annoying as the rest of them, with his over the top histrionics and inane banter with the other commentators.
The ABC Grandstand commentators do a much better job, in my opinion.
Agreed entirely. But something tells me some people must like it.
Why else would they keep it up? Ray Warren is very frustrating to listen to, he overpowers the games. Gould should be back on the sideline for a handful of insightful comments occasionally through the game. He must have some football intelligence but it's lost in all the nonsense he talks because he is in the box and feels he has to say something, usually silly stuff to appeal to a handful.
When they're together it's insufferable.
Hadley is in interesting one. Sometimes I've listened to him call on radio and then watched the replay later. It's like he's watching a completely game!
Fittler and Johns have no place whatsoever on a professional commentary team. I am embarrassed by them and I used to embarrassed for them until I realised they weren't aware of their limitations at all.
I've heard people complain about the Fox team but to me they blend in a lot more. Maybe that's the difference?
It's as though Channel 9 have the volume on the refs and crowd way down and the commentators up so high they can't be ignored. With Fox I'm more able to 'zone out' of their commentary and enjoy the game.
Channel 9 commentary is invasive.
There's a lot of love around for Voss at the moment and at the risk of sounding like an all round whinger, I didn't like him much in recent years either. Loved him when he called Commonwealth Bank Cup though.
Having said all that, there's no way I can watch a game of footy with the sound on mute so I'm stuck with them!
When Ray and Gus get their scripted banter on I think of these two, except the muppets are entertaining:
