A magnificent defensive performance has helped propel Cronulla into the top four for the first time since 2008 as it overcame St George Illawarra 12-0 in Saturday's clash at Shark Park. In a high-class encounter, the Sharks spent large periods of the game on the back foot, but showed great determination to hold out their local rivals for their fourth successive win and delight the 21,380 fans - their biggest crowd since 2004.

Cronulla pounded the Dragons - it was brutal and it was impressive. Cronulla are among the form teams of the NRL premiership.

Paul Gallen - well, he is Superman. He is now, in my opinion, the greatest forward in Cronulla's 45-year history. For the fifth week in a row, Gallen ran for more than 200m on Saturday night. Has any player ever before had such a giant motor?

Everyone loves being at Cronulla, and everyone loves the bunch of blokes that they're around, and are willing to give their best for that bloke next to them.
- Luke Pickerd, RLW April 2012

But the laid-back No 1 is just happy to be running around in the black, white and blue of the club he's supported all his life.
- RLW on Luke Pickerd, April 2012
Love it

[Carney] was all right; played good. They won so he's going to get all the press. You guys will bag me all week, won't be in Origin …

Cronulla seized control of the game when, with 21,380 fans screaming and clapping, they produced a strong defensive game which frustrated the attack out of the Dragons into errors. Veteran centre Colin Best typified the night with some bone-on-bone tackles.

Todd Carney last night put his hand up to play State of Origin after Cronulla surged into the top four by shutting out derby rivals St George Illawarra for the first time. The win capped a memorable 24 hours for the Sharks, who signed a major sponsor, posted a sell-out crowd for the first time since 2004 and saw Paul Gallen write his name into the record books by becoming the first player to run for 200m in five straight games.

Toyota Stadium on a Saturday night isn't an easy place to play footy. Southerly squalls can rip in off the ocean. There's better lighting at a bush paddock. The SCG this is not. But it is Cronulla, baby, Sharks' home turf. And the joint is jumping. The full-house sign is up and 21,380 folks in for what is still a cracking local derby.

They lean over the parapets to high-five those fellow fans walking out and have a good-hearted crack at the Dragons faithful - particularly the bloke in the Dragons jumper who's forced to wear his wife's Sharks hat and scarf home.

Such grounds must never die. For in terms of rugby league's soul, heart and all the stuff Richo might remember of Souths fans marching on Town Hall to reclaim - not to mention the throbbing atmosphere created in tight suburban grounds - then Homebush be buggered. This is home.

I really don't care about Papalii. Like I said, he hit me a dog shot with a swinging arm and once in the back without the ball. Other than that I don't think there was too much to it.

"I wasn't the greatest player in the world but I played with passion. As a kid, I sat on the hill at Shark Park and dreamed of wearing the jersey. I got there, was playing with my mates, then this bloke came in and took it all away. It was hard to take, yes. Business was going well and I got sick of it, so I just retired, at 27."

"I scored two tries and was man of the match. After my second try, I kissed the Sharks emblem on my jersey, looked towards where Chris was and shot him a big one-finger salute. Probably not the smartest thing I have ever done."

Loved the passion Treister used to play with. Anyone know what he's doing these days?

Went to the States with a carpet business to start with then got into import/export. Made a lot of cash think he is still over there.
