So if the ref has said to a player, "I've had enough of your infringements, one more and you're in the bin" and then the player infringes again, the ref can't bin him if the next infringement coincides with a penalty try?
Depends, day game or night game?

I just don't think that it's fair that a misdemeanour goes unpunished by interpretation of the rules or guidelines.

You do something against the laws of the game to prevent a try and everything is made alright by the try being awarded as a penalty try.

Your only punishment is that the try that should have occured is awarded.

Nothing to punish you from breaking the laws of the game in the lead up.

Nothing to discourage you from doing the same next time.
Maybe the other team scoring could discourage you from not properly stopping them scoring next time

If what you did is deserving of a sinbin you should be sinbinned whether a try is awarded or not.

That's a simplified version of what I'm trying to say.

If they were going to score a try with certainty and a defender came in with an intentional swinging arm and broke the potential try scorer's jaw, could it not be both a penalty try and a sin bin or send off?
I’m pretty sure this has happened before where a penalty try and a sin bin was given

Not sure anyone has said this ( will repeat Moylan thread )
But , what the hell is he doing , rushing out of the line EVERY time .
Randomly no problem .
We WILL get picked off
AND , foot in ruck cost us the game

Trying to shutdown a player he knows he won’t be able to stop if they get a run up on him

Rightly or wrongly that’s what he’s doing

Just worried if he does this EVERY play we will get PORKED.
Hasn't been doing the same every game so far ?
Parra admitted the best way to stop Munster was straight line defence.
Staggered gave him opportunities

Not sure. However I don't think a ref would hesitate sending someone to the bin for foul play after a penalty try in this modern era.

They won't however send someone to bin for a professional foul if they award the penalt try.

Yes.

Modern day interpretations and wording confuse things, but the way the rule has always been is…

Foul Play = holding back, holding down, offside, etc. Also - getting involved in a fight was included in foul play (you can be sent for 10 mins to calm down) but punching/striking was not.

Misconduct = everything else (high tackles, etc.)

Penalty tries exclusively relate to foul play (excluding fighting. If there is misconduct that can be punished separately, via an 8 point try, penalty, sin bin, or send off.

The average punter misunderstands the rules, thinking that a high tackle or late hit is “foul play” when it is actually considered “misconduct”. In the past, it was never possible for the sin bin to be used for misconduct, but the NRL changed this in 2016 to allow the sin bin for punching, and then again in 2018 to allow the sin bin for any misconduct…

The Swans are playing next door at 4:45pm. Good luck getting a park if you're planning on driving.

Not sure if that's true .
I think the Japanese used the sun bin way back in WW2

With penalty tries, the NRL also has the fine print that “the video ref reserves the right to do whatever he likes, whether it follows the rules or not”.

The Ainscough one is a well known example. At the time when that happened, the rules did not include allowing a penalty try for misconduct (high tackle) on the potential try-scorer. The correct decision should have been penalty + sent off.

Another one is the penalty try awarded to Brisbane in the 2016 finals. Using your feet to save a try was always considered misconduct prior to that. The Broncos player places the ball on a Titan’s foot, we get a penalty try from the video ref, and suddenly without any change to the rulebook we now expect this to be a try every time.

Neither of these should have been awarded at the time, but would be under the current rules (the NRL have since moved a bunch of things from the “misconduct” list to the “foul play” list).

Agreed. One of the reasons, unfortunately, that I have decided not to go. Just don't want the hassle of that and there is no way I am taking the train. So I'll watch it at home with my mate Kayo.

Unfortunately I can't go for other reasons. But even so, I would have had to have missed for the same reason. My 7 year old would be absolutely knackered by 10pm so I'd need the car within a 15-20min walk at most.
