Some coaches are best suited to the assistants role.Someone with an astute football brain may not have the extra skills needed for the top job. That type of person can still be very useful dissecting opposition teams and given a specific job without overall responsibility.

A failed stint as a head coach does not mean he does not know the game. I think he was on a hiding to nothing, following Bennett at the Dragons. The salary cap pressure that goes with winning a comp was dumped in his lap, and Bennett does not have a good record of leaving clubs in good shape.

The world of sport is littered with very competent assistants, who for whatever reason, have not made the step up.In some cases it is bad timing.

Sharp was more qualified! Just had a look at the Drags League Unlimited site interesting reading, appears as though they are not to upset about Price leaving.

so? Were any of us sad that Sharpie left? Im sure Eels fans are looking for positives in his appointment (it was eels he went to wasnt it?)

Nothing wrong with Price, other than the fact he wont be putting any pressure on the club chin up champion, he has 1st grade experience, which i think moving forward with player management/squad management isnt a bad thing. Yes Griffin might have been the best candidate, but candidates are only that if they are interested, he may not have been

A month ago I would have preferred Griffin too, but he didn't do great and he had a far superior squad to Price, plus the benefit of coaching the untouchable Broncos.

I'm not stoked with Price , but I don't think its the grim outcome some people are alluding to.

you make good points. i think on a winning percentage Griffin does have it over Price (and Flanno) but yeah he has had some luck in, the normal 7 day recovery period each week haha, a 300k salary cap rort swept under the rug etc etc. Plus a team full of origin players. He probably under achieved with them, i think they only made the finals once (or maybe twice) this year and 2012 i think.

Can't really agree with this. Griffin has a winning % of 54, that's better than a lot of coaches. Also brought through some good youngsters in the process. I reckon he's left the Bronco's in decent shape. No doubt Bennett will come in now and take all the kudos if they do well.

you're exactly right. Problem for us is that we now have two of them.

BK was always my preference and being a half back he may have been able to manufacture us a good young half rather than us having to go to market with a fist full of coin.

Anyway, we've got Price now, so let's hope he brings his A game and helps us into a top 8 or better yet top 4 spot next season.

unless price has a good long kicking game and a semi decent attacking game, then he wont be getting us into the 8

I got his win % at 50, which is still ok but I think they were pretty lucky to make the finals this year, and the year he did get them there was on the back of Lockyer's farewell swansong(s).

Honestly, I reckon I am just looking for a silver lining for hiring a StGeorge coach with a crappy record.

101 games, 54 wins is what I can see. Better winning % than:

Michael Hagan
Nathan Brown
Daniel Anderson
Frank Stanton
Tim Sheens
Graham Murray
Brian Smith
Graham Lowe

I'm not saying he's a great coach, but he seems to be very good at developing and bringing young guys into FG. That's why I like him.

I like Griffin for the same reason. Smith and Slater credit him with a lot of their development while in Brisbane.

That said, Price is more than likely going to have the same rile as Sharp did and take charge of defense. If he did the same for Bennett when the Dragons won then he could be a great appointment because their defense was impregnable.

Also wouldn't surprise me if Flanno feels less threatened by having Price rather than Griffen.

Frank stanton ? Didn't he coach about 50 years ago. Seems a very random name to add to your list.

i think using a first grade record to argue the pros/cons of him being an assistant isnt really much of an indicator.

Griffin did well, but he did have some great experienced players. His winning percentage is greatly impoved by a good showing is 2011 too. He would have been a good pick up i completely agree, but who is saying he was even interested? Just because they were recently ****ed off from their employer doesnt mean they are just looking to sign as an assistant with the wooden spooners. Griffin would never have been sent if Bennett wasnt coming back. He will probably get a Head Coach job by mid season next year, that is probably what he is banking on.

I'm sure you realised that I meant through his coaching ability.
If we had to rely on him on the park then we would be in BIG trouble and can see us with the spoon again next season!
