Our defence is clearly what is costing us in these big games & it shows our level we are at compared to the current standout teams. Missing way too many easy tackles with hardly any effort to even have a go properly. Most teams are clearly making 60-70mtrs on us every set & that puts them in a good position end of every set. Got no issues with our attack, it's just we had SJ out, probably a reason we didn't seem to go too crash hot this weekend. JM needs to spend a bit more time focusing on our defence for the rest of the year if we want to have a go in the 8. We use to rush up in defence as a pack & that use to reduce the metres for the teams, these days we just stay right back & give them the easy momentum.

Watched the game again. Our best halves pairing is Trindall/Johnson. Or Atleast Chad/Johnson, with Trindall on the bench.

Agree with both

It pains me when there is actual no movement in the defence line. There's no urgency at meeting the attacker in defence, we wait for them to make 5 - 10 metres, then tackle flat footed so they can make more post tackle metres. Our slide in defence? Obsolete.

I hope we don't get embarrassed again.

hello darkness my old friend.....

the sad thing is how simple and unflashy most of the panthers try's were. they didn't have to camp down our end, build pressure and figure out a way to crack our line or anything. if a team puts points on and beats you like that fair play but they just get walked down to our 20, simple passes, runs and kicks and our shocking marking up and tackling did the rest. we did not handle their offloads well either and struggled to shut down line breaks on many occasions just getting pushed off. theres just so little commitment and resilience shown as a unit. some players are having crack in defense but as a team its shocking

Then we remove the problem, simple. Remove all incompetent referees

and who decides who is incompetent and who isn't? it wont be the NRL cause they appointed these officials - so the coaches, players, fans? who decides who stays and who goes?

all refs have bad games, some more often than others so they are all incompetent then, we won't have any officials left, the ref depth is thin and which young new ref will want to step in and been thrown to the lions to be deemed incompetent. there just is not many officials to replace the current crop with

not giving the refs a pass here and saying there shouldn't be standards and accountability and the bs six agains and penalties and inconsistent rulings frustrate me no end and the vid ref does my head in but i dont think any of them go out there to make the wrong call intentionally so they can get destroyed by fans, coaches and potentially dropped or disciplined by their NRL masters. every teams fans think the ref is biased against them, especially when they are on the wrong end of the scoreboard

the imperfect systems and structures that they operate in exist and will still be in place, it's just not as simple as sacking the lot of them. i mean the game can't even decide on the fundamental rule and concept of what a knock on is ffs what hope do they have

Our missed tackles are the telling stat end of story.
This misses are costing us field position and exhausting our energies.

Not even all the favours in the world from officials will help us if we dont fix that. We are worst in the comp for it and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th worst are all down the bottom of the table.
We are over achieving right now by actually being in the 8

combined with Cronulla's uncanny super power of finding a way to be offside or cause a ruck infringement. For a team that tackles so bad you would think we would prefer to keep the opposition around the half way line, not our 20. then again we are good for conceding line breaks too so they are gunna get down our end eventually anyway

if SJ wasn't having one of his better seasons in scintillating form we wouldn't even be in the 8. he has been the difference for us combined with some fantastic young forward talents.

Defence is attitude - something the coaching staff needs to address. Everyone’s happy to run around and score tries but what’s the point if you crack under any sort of pressure

true but it isn't just that. communication and structure are vitally important. look at how organised the storms defense is, that isn't just attitude, that is alot of talking, practice and systems coming into play
this is where coach Morris needs help but we know the situation with resources now isn't facilitating that.

I think the coach tried to address our fragility defending in the middle and tbf there are seemingly less try's scored against us under the sticks (maybe just a few less soft ones - still too many) but its still not great but we are now more compressed infield especially on our line and this is leaving our edges even more exposed, our centre rushes up and in to try and compensate for the second rower not being there and then the winger is left with a tough decision to hold or come in himself. its just simple catch and pass overlaps for the opposition. I think brailey and the fullback have a bit of a role to play comms and direction wise with this, we are just commiting too many bodies to defending around the ruck area cause we have no confidence in making a hit and stick tackle and stopping an offload or dummy.

we were like this alot of the time under flanno/price as well though in terms of a passive wait for them to come you defensive line. However the big difference was we could push up aggressively as a defensive unit when the situation in the game called for and I think in the bigger games our defensive line was much more up and in your face as well, particularly in 2016

Watched some of the highlights (lowlights)

We really made Liam Martin look good didn't we. Moylan efforts in two of those tries was pathetic arm grabs.

Ronnie also had a bad night, out jumped by Crichton and rushed in a few times, albeit what the inside does often leaves him with no option.

Goes with out saying defence needs alot of work. Mostly in the attitude. They just don't concentrate for a full game.

did kikau get suspended for his late hit; or did he have nothing to answer for?
I googled and it came up with a two week suspension for a late hit on a dragons player last year!
