With Katoa possibly out for an extended period its an absolute no-brainer to move val back to the wing

Id like to see this run out next week

1. Dugan
2. Feki
3. Gray
4. Lutes
5. Holmes

Anything else will be second best imo.

I’m not overly concerned about tonight’s result.

What I am concerned about is the return of last year’s problems.

We are still not controlling the ball.
We are still giving away stupid penalties.
Our kicking game is still ****.
We don’t show patience at critical times.

Our defence when under pressure is still pretty good.
They really should have won that game by 20.

Not much else to get enthused about but like most have said it’s Round 1 so a long way to go.

To be fair, you don’t win a competition by the excuses you make but by the points you earn.

Of course. Simply stating we are far from the dire situation many of those on this forum are pegging is in.

We just need to show some patience this spine is new and we have a new play style to work out with Moylan.

We were a dogs breakfast. Like coach and Gal said in the presser, the only way we stayed in the game was our effort and determination. To that I would add that the Cowboys stunk as well.

We were poor tonight but there was one thing that really shat me and that was when boogie got pinned for a knock on when Thurston had his hands all over the ball. I mean, we grab a penalty there and almost certainly kick for 2 points to level up but no, golden boy can do no ****ing wrong.

Ironically it was the exact reverse of the dodgy penalty blown against Prior in the last game we played against them in the semi and allowed them to level the scores for extra time, except that Thurston had his hands all over the ball and Prior somehow stripped it with his shoulder. Flanno obviously couldn't spare another 10k over it though.

A lot of familiar ****. Poor discipline and some school boy errors. Which was where we came undone last year. Id love to know whats been done to address it.

Our defence was still strongish. They did go over the line a fair few times. We were lucky to have been able to hold them up or force an error a few times.

On the val situation....i havent given up on him. Yet. But he’d wanna improve. We cant sit here and say hes a better winger so put him there. He shone at wing with good backlines. Barba, bird, etc. or in origin/tests with a world class side. Gotta give him a few games to prove his case. No improvement, back to the wing

After the fact I'm not so worried.

Val had his worst game since that time at home he bombed 4 tries. He wasn't anywhere near as shaky under the high ball last year so I don't think we see a display like that again. The kickoff error was ridiculous.
He had next to no chance to inject himself in attack but showed promise with that little break to put brailey through to almost score. I'd like to see him with more oppportunities with the ball in hand before ending the experiment. Biggest concern was the effort in defence, he really needs to put his all into every tackle if he's going to be the last line.

Chad also put in a shocker, but his kicking game was far better last year esspecially on the goal line. Just needs to get the organisation down so we are making good choices to end the set. If nothings on atleast put up a chip we can contest. Fantastic goal kicking though.

Moyza put his body on the line in both attack and defence and was a damn near chance of icing that game for us. We need to also remember that Maloney barely kicked the ball last year. Hopefully he gets around it a bit more though as he seems to have a decent boot.

Fifitas first stint was incredible. Looked energised and ready to tear teams to shred, second hit was quality too. Bukuya was unreal all around the park. Wade started well but overplayed his hand far to much at the end in trying to force something to happen on that left edge.

Round 1, cowboys who are favourites only looked marginally better than us. I'd say pressure is on flanno more than anyone else to sort out last years discipline so we can actually play a bit of football.

Settle down, everyone. We'll flick the switch when we need to.

The thing about the "we will flick the switch" line, is that we said that throughout the whole of the 2017 season.
Granted it is round 1 against a motivated and emotional Cowboys side playing for JT in the 300th. It was always going to be an uphill to win this one but let's hope we aren't still saying "it's ok, we will flick the switch" in another 5 to 10 or so rounds, cos by then we start thinking about 2019.

Hoping that Flanno rips them a new one and that the switch is flicked from round 2 (cos I'm an impatient bastard and want to see us winning games).
