Castleford Tigers: Crusader Nick is club's 'Third Man'
Published Date: 09 September 2010
Australian back Nick Youngquest was today confirmed as Castleford Tiger's third major signing for 2011.
The much-travelled full-back/ winger will join Tigers from engage Super League rivals Crusaders on a two-year deal.
He is set to join fellow recruits ex-Harlequins hooker/half-back Danny
Orr and Warrington Wolves full-back Richard Mathers at the Jungle next year.
Describing Tigers as "a club with a lot of history", Youngquest
said: "It's a new area for me and I'm looking forward to a new challenge.
"I guess there will be more expectations of me than when I came to Crusaders, but I'm ready for that."
He joined Crusaders as a full-back, but said: "I've played most of the year on the wing, which is where I'm expecting to figure and where I feel more at home.
"As a winger I enjoy scoring tries, but I like to do the hard work as well which is so important. I feel the forwards appreciate my help in taking the ball forward."
Cas boss Terry Matterson described 27-year-old Youngquest as a "genuine flier".
He said: "He is a great signing for us, he has been excellent this year.
"He made 206 metres last weekend and he is one of the biggest yardage
men in Super League.
"He is a really good finisher and defensively, he is solid.
"He is very fast and he has the most quick play-the-balls in Super League. There's some pretty impressive stats there, as impressive as any winger in the competition."
Matterson believes Youngquest's best years are ahead of him. He added: "There has been a bit of an issue with errors in his game, but that's not there any more.
"He has certainly improved in that area and hopefully he will continue to improve."
Matterson confirmed he plans to use Youngquest as a winger, but he insisted Michael Wainwright – who is now out of contract – still figures in his plans.
"I am hoping to re-sign Michael as well," said Matterson. "We are light in depth in the outside-backs. We haven't had much competition for places.
"We haven't replaced Michael Shenton with an out-and-out centre, but Ryan McGoldrick has played there a lot, so has Brett Ferres. We have got Joe Arundel and Jordan Thompson and Richie Mathers is coming in, so we have got plenty of options there."
Sydney-born Youngquest made 37 appearances in Australia's NRL, beginning his career with Cronulla in 2003 and also playing for St George-Illawarra, Penrith and Canterbury.
He played for French side Pia in 2008 before joining Gateshead Thunder the following year.
He moved to Crusaders at the start of this term and appeared in 24 of their 27 games in the regular Super League season, scoring nine tries.
Youngquest is famous in Australia for posing for a nude calendar, to raise money for a breast cancer charity. He also got his kit off to appear in gay lifestyle magazine Attitude.
Tigers are awaiting the result of their appeal against a £40,000 RFL fine imposed after a small number of fans allegedly aimed homophobic abuse at Youngquest's Crusaders team-mate Gareth Thomas during a game at the Jungle in March.
Meanwhile, Matterson confirmed Tigers are interested in signing St Helens' former Leeds, Huddersfield, Warrington and Hull KR prop Nick Fozzard.
