Youngquest signs with Tigers

November 26, 2007 12:00AM

WINGER Nick Youngquest will play for his fourth NRL club in six years after agreeing a one-year deal to join Wests Tigers for 2008.

The 24-year-old scored seven tries in 11 games and also kicked 15 goals for Penrith in 2007.

Youngquest has played a total of 33 first grade games in a career which started with Cronulla in 2003 and went to St George-Illawarra in 2004 and 2005 before he joined the Panthers for 2006.

Wests Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell said Youngquest would be a valuable asset.

"Nick will fill a utility hole left by the departure of Daniel Fitzhenry," McDonnell said.

"He can play centre, wing and full-back. Nick has good height and size and plenty of pace."

YOUNGQUEST SIGNS WITH BULLDOGS, PHELPS RELEASED TO WIGAN
Thursday 22 May 2008 14:40
by (Press Release) www.bulldogs.com.au

The Mitsubishi Electric Bulldogs have today secured the services of experienced outside back Nick Younquest after agreeing to a release with his current club the West Tigers.

Younquest will join the Bulldogs for the remainder of the 2008 season and will commence training with the Bulldogs NSW Cup team early next week after their bye this weekend.

This deal was made possible after the Bulldogs agreed to a request from Cameron Phelps who sought a release from his current contract to take up an opportunity with English Super League Club Wigan.

"Cameron has requested an opportunity to further his career overseas, which we were more than happy to assist with given the right circumstances," said Bulldogs Chief Executive Mr Todd Greenberg.

"When Nick Younquest became available, we felt this was a suitable replacement to our playing roster and we were more than happy to grant the release on those grounds.

"Cameron has been a tremendous servant to this club, coming through the local junior ranks and going on to make a significant contribution in the senior grades. We wish him well in his future endeavours and look forward to welcoming Nick into the Bulldogs club."

Phelps will join the Wigan Warriors this season and will make a final appearance for the Bulldogs at fullback in next Mondays NRL clash against the Sharks at ANZ Stadium.

Cagefighter v Youngquest, Bird - Courier Mail

Cagefighter v Youngquest, Bird
By Dean Ritchie
August 20, 2008 12:00am

HE'S the former jailbird and part-time cage fighter who managed to stop not one but two NRL stars during a fight at a Cronulla bar last Sunday afternoon.

At Sting Bar around 6pm,a behemoth known only as Danyan decked Bulldogs winger Nick Youngquest from behind with a hefty blow. Sharks Test star Greg Bird rushed in to support Youngquest - but he too copped one on the chin from Danyan.

Bulldogs CEO Todd Greenberg yesterday described the local knuckleman as a "lunatic''. The two footy stars were unaware Danyan had just been released from jail and was a hardened cage fighter.

The Daily Telegraph last night could not locate Danyan. Daniel Holdsworth, the Bulldogs utility player, was present at the bar but not involved in the drama. The Bulldogs yesterday cleared Youngquest of any blame while Cronulla officials claimed Bird "did nothing wrong''.

Neither player will be fined although the Bulldogs will reprimand Youngquest. Holdsworth invited Bird for a beer after a Sharks fan day about 3.30pm.

"Greg went for a few beers when some bloke belted Nick Youngquest - he king-hit him in the jaw,'' Cronulla chief executive Tony Zappia said.

"Birdy then went in and he got whacked too. Birdy then wrestled the bloke to the ground before security intervened and escorted the bloke out of the premises.

"All Greg was doing was protecting Nick Youngquest. This happened at 6pm and Birdy was home by 8.30pm.''

Staff at Sting Bar confirmed tough guy Danyan had been thrown out after the incident. "Greg did nothing wrong,'' Zappia said.

"It wasn't late at night and he wasn't intoxicated. He didn't leave our fan day until 3.30pm and this happened at 6pm. Greg was very open and honest with the club. He came straight to myself and Ricky (Stuart, Sharks coach) and told us what happened.''

One man who watched the fight said: "Greg is old school. He went straight in to help his mate. The bloke really cleaned up Youngquest. He was a bit mad.''

Greenberg, finally over the Sonny Bill Williams saga, confirmed his player was punched. "Nick copped a whack,'' he said. "I can't find out a reason as to why it happened but the players (Youngquest and Holdsworth) claimed it wasn't their fault.

"Bird came in over the top - he did the right thing. The lunatic was then kicked out. Nick and Bird went outside and got a taxi home. They just wanted to get away. It is a reminder that players need to be very careful about where they go for a drink and the type of people they mix with.''

Bird, ready to play in Friday night's big match against the Sydney Roosters at Toyota Stadium, did not return calls last night. Youngquest will play NSW Cup for the Bulldogs against North Sydney.

Yeah no surprises there. It's known for this type of clientele.

We've already got one like that - he's known as Gallen!

I disagree with ya there mate, if ross had of thrown a punch and got suspended he would have been in heaps of trouble for missing more matches, it took guts to stand there and take it.

Got to agree about Ross. He created the incident with a bit of niggle in the tackle, copped a couple slaps on the chin for it and got us a piggy back up field. I still reckon we should have been 13 on 12 for 10 minutes. It took good restraint from Ross to cop that - if he knuckled back I'd reckon they both could have faced 10 in the bin.

NRL players in fight
BY GARETH BETHELL

THE police will not be called in to investigate a fight between a part-time cage fighter and two NRL players at a Cronulla bar.

A man known only as Danyan was involved in a brawl with Sharks Test star Greg Bird and Bulldogs winger Nick Youngquest at Sting Bar about 6pm last Sunday.

Cronulla chief executive Tony Zappia said yesterday the matter was over and done with and neither player would be fined.

``It's not my job to report it to the police,'' he said.

``And from what I understand, there was no police involved. It was just handled by security.

``They saw what happened and they asked the person to leave.''

Miranda local area command crime manager, Detective Inspector Greg Bamford, said police had not received any reports of the incident.

Mr Zappia said Bird had tried to intervene after seeing someone hit Youngquest, who lives in the shire.

``Birdy then went in and he got whacked too,'' he said. ``Birdy then wrestled the bloke to the ground before security intervened and escorted the bloke out of the premises.''

LEAGUE

Fox Sports 2, 3.15-9.30pm. Tigers v Sea Eagles (Toyota Cup) from 3.15. Tigers v Sea Eagles (first grade) from 5.30. Bulldogs v Eels or Knights v Cowboys (viewer's choice) from 7.30.

So Nick Youngquest and Greg "Bebop" Bird have escaped censure for their part in a bar-room brawl earlier this week. For those who missed it, the Bulldogs winger and Sharks man were contemplating life from opposite ends of the ladder over a drink in Cronulla on Sunday when they both, without provocation, got smashed in the head by an ex-con and noted cage fighter known only as "Danyan" (sounds like a porn name to us - maybe there's more to "Danyan" than we've been told).

Both clubs moved quickly to pledge not to take any disciplinary action against the players. This is a good thing - no one should ever be punished for having their head kicked in. But the broader question is this - what kind of a message does it send to the kids, to all the little ones out there who grow up dreaming of a life where they can tie dirty rags around their wrists and belt the **** out of people for a living, when a man like Danyan, a well-known and respectable figure in the cage-fighting community, is seen to behave so rashly in public?

Cage fighters, of course, are noted role models in our community. Yes, they compete at an elite level. But with competition comes rewards - free, 24-hour access to cyclone fencing, fancy shorts, the right to go through life post-cage-fighting without the use of a proper, functioning brain - and with competition, most importantly, comes responsibility.

Kids, quite simply, look up to cage fighters. Sure, they look up and then start running away, but the point is that they look up. "Cagies", in other words, are household names - household names in the sense that they have names you might find in any ordinary household, yes, but household names all the same.

On The Box isn't the first weekend sport TV listings column to point this out, but cage fighters are the kind of people who, with the right management and only a little effort on the part of the sport's marketers, could sell airconditioners; it surely can't be long, for instance, before we see a cage fighter replace Mark Taylor as the face of Fujitsu wall-mounted cooling units.

That's how big these guys are within the community. And that's why Danyan's recent fit of pique is so unfortunate. I mean, if you have a lot of pent-up rage and live with the almost permanent desire to go out and bash people, isn't that why you get into cage fighting in the first place? By losing his cool so dramatically at a bar last weekend, Danyan has cast eternal shame across the face of the grand old game of cage fighting.

Today, each one of us who knows and loves the semi-regulated spectacle of men beating each other senseless - and there are many in this country - will feel the pain of disappointment keenly.

Hey hey dont get emotional little eagle, didn't you like a bit of realality ?
Truth is Eagle, no one should be supporting Bird if the allegations against him prove to be true. But at this stage, whilst its still in a court of law, thats all they are allegations. I hope on the Eagles site you have also describe Watmough as a DOG, as from all reports, the allegations against him proved to be facts.
Look on here Oct 8th, and if he's found guilty, I will join the chorus of the Dog call just for you buddy.
