Roosters and Newtown have parted ways for NSW Cup next year. Do we join with the Jets again? I say yes.

They will come to us with a proposal...
Might be worth a look, but id rather see our juniors filling the NSW cup squad instead of washed up old blokes that have signed with Newtown

Hahaha, so in theory Stapo could be playing for us again!

How do these arrangements actually work?

Do they virtually become our second grade team, or do we just farm out 10 or so players every week when they don't make our first grade team? Are all their signed players eligible to play for us if need be? How closely do the clubs work in this type of arrangement?

Generally speaking...
An independent club like Wyong or Newtown will approach an NRL club with a proposal for that NRL club to become a partner, so they can use the NRL clubs brand etc. While also becoming a feeder to the first grade team. The NRL club has demands that the feeder club must meet e.g. 11 players in NSW cup every week or must wear our jersey at least 2 times a year. Basically the NRL club can call the shots, the feeder club just runs the team.
The feeder club can also have players signed directly to them, its cheaper for clubs to have a feeder club because they run the team and in the case of newtown... they have a home ground and jersey which makes it easier on clubs like Cronulla.

From memory the original deal we had with the jets a few years ago collapsed because they didn't like the sharks recruiting thier players into first grade or something like that. In essence they felt the sharks management of the whole thing was too disruptive to the jets. That's what I heard around Henson park anyway.

Was the Roosters deal any better from their perspective?

We used to have an area in Brisbane when Langy was coach and he Managed to bring a lot of young talent to the club who turned into regular top line talent , HE HELPED DEVELOP SOME INTO STATE REP PLAYERS .

Shepherd I think. He's the one that signed Brown on sight for instance.

This is a complex issue and it would be great to know what the NRL are planning with respect to reserve grade. A press release came out earlier in the year - does anyone remember what was in it?

The long and short of it is that the Roosters and now the Strom have got the jump on the other Sydney Clubs. By linking with the Central Coast and the Sunshine Coast they reduce the costs of running their reserve grade team while building a new source of supporters and junior talent.

The Roosters for instance will have their Matt's and SG Ball sides plus the Central Coast Centurians junior sides all feeding in to their NYC group. The Storm will get much the same though obviously their own junior programmeis Vic based.

And the thing is, its so easy to do: take a trial game to that area every year, have a camp up there, do fan days up there and you become the default team for a region of 200,000 in the case of the Sunshine Coast.

Those two spots were the obvious ones to link with. The only other place that seems clearly under serviced in terms of development pathways is NZ - and particularly the South Island (given the Warriors dominate the North).

We have a scholarship program/partnership with the Haswell Hornets which is how we picked up Penani. I would love to see us expand that association to the entire Canterbury/Southland RL catchment area and make that a second feeder in to out NYC squads. In all likelihood it wouldn't be viable to have our reserve grade side based there (though that would certainly establish us there) but committing to supporting that competition and providing Development Officers would be what's needed.

In some ways having our own reserve grade side and playing three games a fortnight at.home could be an advantage and a point of difference. A day at Shark Park could be the last 'real' day at the footy left in a few years.

You make some very valid points NZ has a load of talent and would be good to continue and to expand this possibility. Also think it would be good to develop our own NSW CUP Team . it could give us a bigger talent pool and a better look at our younger players.

I would still like to know do we have a talent scout ? and who he is and what he does or is doing . If we don't have why not, We should have contacts all over the country and NZ.

Backdoor method to being able to utilise Arana Taumata IF we were desperately short of a half due to injury.
I know Arana Taumata is a grub, blah blah blah , but could be a cheap, handy grub for us whilst playing mainly under the Newtown banner
